STAFF REVIEW of 4x4 Evo 2 (Xbox)

Friday, November 30, 2001.

4x4 Evo 2 Box art I have played many driving games that basically just have you drive around which can be very boring. 4X4 Evo2 has missions, yes it?s still driving, but with a plot. From rescuing people to finding a plane crash. This is set up very similar to the Grand Turismo line of games, except for off-road folks. You can upgrade your tires, shocks, lift kits, winch's, headlights, snorkle's, brush guards, motor, brakes and just about everything you can think of. On a sour note, the manual is USELESS. No pics, VERY poor descriptions.

The controls are very easy to master, it seems button configuration are well thought of, which makes it easy to jump right in and doing a little driving.

OK? here is where I think it gets interesting. The ?playable? vehicle models are very nice looking. The cars even get a little dirty, which can be cleaned by driving though a little water. My problem is with all of the other environment vehicles. Like a bulldozer that you will encounter on a road, the wheels on it don?t turn. But yet is driving right along. Or how about a Jet liner that is sitting on a runway that has six sided tires? No wonder it?s sitting on the runway, you can?t take off with square tires! Come on folks, this is ridicules. Can someone say PORT?!

The sound is pretty cool. You can hear birds, twigs busting under your tires even the sound of the winch operating. Of course you hear your engine along with everyone else?s, but it does sound good.

You need to remember that this is the Xbox. It's not a weak console, try putting a little more effort into the graphics. Xbox gamers will not settle for 2nd best graphics. If we wanted to play this kind of game, we would have stuck with the conasole we had before. Try remembering that for your next title for us.

Overall: 6.0 / 10
Gameplay: 8.0 / 10
Visuals: 4.0 / 10
Sound: 7.0 / 10
