XboxAddicts' Most Anticipated Games of 2008
by Shawn Rozankowski

May 6, 2008

2007 has come to an end, we saw many great games last year that included Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Halo 3, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, BioShock and many more. The staff at XboxAddict takes a look into the biggest titles for 2008.

XboxAddict presents the Most Anticipated Games of 2008:

Role-Playing Games:

Fallout 3

Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
Developer: Bethesda Softworks
Release Date: Q4 2008
Genre: Role-Playing Game

Fallout 3 is being developed by the same team that worked on the last two titles in Bethesda's Elder Scrolls series, Morrowind and Oblivion. If those games are any indication of what we can look forward to from Bethesda we are in for a real treat. Like previous titles by Bethesda you can choose either a good or evil path which will change ending you will see when you beat the game.

Fallout 3 puts you in Washington DC, now known as the Capital Wasteland, where for 200 years, Vault 101 has faithfully served the surviving residents. Though the global atomic war of 2077 left the US all but destroyed, the residents of Vault 101 enjoy a life free from the constant stress of the outside world. Giant Insects, Raiders, Slavers, and yes, even Super Mutants are all no match for superior Vault-Tec engineering. Yet one fateful morning, you awake to find that your father has defied the Overseer and left the comfort and security afforded by Vault 101 for reasons unknown. Leaving the only home you’ve ever known, you emerge from the Vault into the harsh Wasteland sun to search for your father, and the truth.

Too Human

Publisher: Microsoft
Developer: Silicon Knights
Release Date: Q3 2008
Genre: Action/Role-Playing Game

In Too Human the player takes on the role of Baldur, one of the Aesir. In the ancient past the Norse Gods truly existed, although only in the form of cybernetically enhanced humans. Baldur, son of Odin is one of these gods and it is his charge to protect the human race from an onslaught of an advancing machine presence determined to eradicate all human life.

The story chronicles the ongoing struggle between cybernetic Norse gods, the invading machine presence and mortal men through an epic story. The story features many Norse gods and character from Norse mythology including Thor, Loki, Odin, Heimdall, Freyja, and Mimir. Every event, character and location in Too Human has a direct parallel to Norse mythology. The story features Yggdrasil, the tree of life, as a gateway to an alternate world known as Cyberspace that is accessed through the advanced technology of the Norse gods.

Silicon Knights has revealved that Too Human will feature 2-4 player co-op seamlessly letting players jump in and out. Denis Dyack, founder of Silicon Knights, has stated the UE3 engine has been tweaked to the point that it’s almost unrecognizable.

Fable 2

Publisher: Microsoft
Developer: Lionhead Studios
Release Date: Q4 2008
Genre: Action/Role-Playing Game

Fable 2 is the sequel to the enchanting, engrossing and award winning action role playing game Fable developed by Peter Molyneux and Lionhead Studios.

Set 500 years after the original game, Fable 2 offers even more choices and features, while building on the core gameplay theme of Fable where every choice continually defines who you become, allowing you to truly live the life you choose.

Fable 2 will introduce a new character to the series which is a dog that will be faithful to you and will have a deeply nuanced artificial intelligence so you won't actually control your dog at all. Instead your dog will act as a sort of living HUD. The game has no map, no other user interface on screen. Instead you will have to rely on the dog and what he sees and does. Fable 2 will feature a spawn system unlike the normal reload from a save point and play the same part again. When you fall to the ground in Fable 2 you have the ability to lose experience, gold, or reknown in order to get up.

Real-Time Strategy Games:

Tom Clancy's EndWar

Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft
Release Date: Q2 2008
Genre: Real-Time Strategy Game

I had a lot of fun playing Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 and Rainbow Six: Vegas over the past year and this game combines all of those games together. EndWar has a voice command system so you can control your units without using a controller. You can control up to twelve units at a time and have a choose of seven different unit types. Ubisoft is going to more of a third-person camera view where the camera takes on the view of one of the twelve squads under your command instead of the more common top view you see in most RTS games.

EndWar puts you in the year 2020, the United States is trying to end strategic nuclear war through an anti-ballistic missile shield with their ally, the European Union (EU); Russia designs their own missile shield independent of the US or EU. As the major economies of the world consume natural resources at an increasing rate, Russia, the owner of most of the oil deposits, benefits from the skyrocketing price of oil and begins to upgrade their military, creating tension with the West. While the US is launching a space station that will house first-response military units, a terrorist attack against the launch pad leaves the superpowers on the brink of war. In 2011, the US and EU sign the historic SLAMS (Space-Land-Air Missile Shield) Treaty, agreeing to co-develop technologies for a comprehensive, interlocking anti-ballistic missile system. Left out of the treaty, Russia accelerates development of its own system. SLAMS is activated in 2014. The US and EU launch test salvos against each other, which the SLAMS weapons completely destroy. Emboldened by the success of the tests, the US and EU pronounces "the end of strategic nuclear war," and the world celebrates a new age of peace and security.

Halo Wars

Publisher: Microsoft
Developer: Ensemble Studios / Bungie Software
Release Date: TBA 2008
Genre: Real-Time Strategy Game

Ensemble Studios, the creators of the Age of Empires series, is bringing real-time-strategy to the Xbox 360 and to the Halo Universe. Designed Exclusively for the Xbox 360, Halo Wars allows you to take charge of the human UNSC armies and see the Halo universe from a totally new perspective. Halo Wars will take place prior to the events of Halo: Combat Evolved. The game is set in 2531, in the UNSC's first battles with the Covenant around the planet Harvest. It will allow the player to control the crew and vehicles of a UNSC ship, CFV-88 Spirit of Fire, and receive instructions and commands from its AI Serena.

Racing Games:

Race Driver: GRID

Publisher:
Codemasters
Developer: Codemasters
Release Date: Q2 2008
Genre: Racing Game

GRID is a true evolution for Codemasters' acclaimed racing series, which first appeared as the TOCA (DTM/V8) Touring Car games (1997–2000) and became the TOCA (DTM/V8) Race Driver series (2002-2006). GRID will use Codemasters new EGO Game Technology Engine. GRID challenges players to become the number one race driver in a new world of exhilarating motorsport.

GRID will take players to beautifully realised and dramatic race locations over three continents to compete in an unprecedented variety of racing events. Packed with the most powerful race cars (new and classic, circuit and drift), players will compete to conquer the most prestigious official race tracks and championships and then go beyond to compete in challenging city-based competitions, through to road events and urban street races.

Midnight Club: Los Angeles

Publisher: Rockstar Games
Developer: Rockstar San Diego
Release Date: Q1 2008
Genre: Racing Game

Midnight Club: Los Angeles is the fourth video game in the Midnight Club racing series. It was officially announced on May 16, 2007 by Rockstar Games. The game is being developed by Rockstar San Diego, the same studio behind Rockstar's first iteration into the seventh generation of video games, Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis. The game will be set in the city of Los Angeles, again providing the option to free-roam on roadways quite larger than all the cities combined from Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition.

New additions are a day-to-night cycle and weather effects, adding a realisitic aspect to the game. After races, if any damage is inflicted upon the vehicle, the player doesn't necessarily have to drive back to the garage for a full repair, but instead can choose the Quick Fix option with which shoddy and old parts will be added to the car. To get the nice look back, they must drive back to repair at a garage. The Los Angeles map is considered one of the most detailed and accurate versions of L.A. yet.

The RAGE system is being used for this game, the same system being used in Grand Theft Auto IV, traffic level will vary upon time of day. Morning and afternoon times will have heaviest traffic, whilst nighttime will have less. This encourages less experienced players to race at night and more experienced to race at day. Another great feature is the game camera. Now a camera is available from within the car, which indicates that Rockstar will be adding steering wheels, car seats, etc. as available parts of purchase. Motorcycles will be returning to the series however no specific names have been released.

Horror / Psychological Thriller Games:

Silent Hill V

Publisher: Konami
Developer: Konami
Release Date: TBA 2008
Genre: Psychological Horror Game

I got really excited when I watched the E3 2007 announcement trailer, Silent Hill is finally coming to the Xbox 360. Silent Hill V will move away from preset camera angles, giving you full control of the visuals. Konami announced that Akira Yamaoka (Sound Director, PC version "Silent Hill 3" Producer) who will have a great role in the making on Silent Hill V. Silent Hill V is using the Havok engine in a unique way. The middleware is being used in the same capacity as it was in Saints Row and Halo 3. Now when you bump into chairs or tables or open doors, the game will register that action in the in-game environment which may alert your enimies of your presence.

Silent Hill V thrusts players into a shadowy world of chaos and terror with atmospheric high definition graphics and an original storyline that sheds new light on the desolate, fog-shrouded town of Silent Hill.

You are Alex Shepherd, a war veteran returning home from an overseas tour of duty to investigate the mysterious disappearance of his younger brother, Joshua. His travels will lead him through the small, insular community of Shepherd's Glen and eventually through the hauntingly empty streets of Silent Hill.

Alan Wake

Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
Developer: Remedy Entertainment
Release Date: TBA 2008
Genre: Psychological Thriller

An intense psychological thriller from Remedy, the creators of Max Payne, Alan Wake looks to raise the bar for future games, creating a true cinematic experience. Alan Wake is a single-player game which reminds me a lot of Condemned: Criminal Origins because of its scary atmosphere. Just looking at screenshots and watching trailers of this game gives me the creeps. Alan Wake also has one of the biggest environments and greatest weather effects ever seen in a console game.

Fill the shoes of one Alan Wake, a man who makes his living from the terror of others as a best-selling suspense novelist. Trapped in the deceptively peaceful Washington town of Bright Falls, where he came to escape the trauma of losing his fiancée, Alan must piece together a mystery to prevent himself from being trapped inside a nightmarish world forever.

Explore an expansive world filled with missions, unique puzzles, intense combat, and horrifying enemies. Dig into a twisting and multi-layered story filled with suspense, engaging characters, and shocking revelations.

Resident Evil 5

Publisher: Capcom
Developer: Capcom
Release Date: TBA 2008
Genre: Horror / Third-Person Action Game

Produced by Jun Takeuchi, this follow-up to the terrifying series introduces the theme of escape as its core survival instinct. Few details have been released about the game's storyline other than the fact that the setting will have a similar feel to the movie Black Hawk Down. Takeuchi added that the developing team is composed of staff members who worked on the first Resident Evil.

As Chris Redfield (former S.T.A.R.S. member and now part of the BSAA unit), your life is in danger as you strive to complete your most dangerous mission yet in a sweltering desert colony where a new breed of evil has been unleashed. Swarms of marauding evil beings will charge at you when your pulse is racing at a heart-shattering pace. Environments will play a bigger factor than ever here, using the power of next-gen systems to create a world where terror might lurk in any alcove or shadow. Powerful lighting effects overwhelm the player with mirage movement and blinding brilliance, and even in the light of day, there is no safe haven in this Resident Evil.

Fighting Games:

Soul Calibur IV

Publisher: Namco Bandai
Developer: Project Soul
Release Date: Q3 2008
Genre: Fighting Game

Soul Calibur IV is the fourth chapter in the critically-acclaimed series. Delivering new gameplay modes, characters and enhanced features with unprecedented 3D modeling and animation, Soulcalibur IV aims to be a definitive fighting game experience. The unrelenting pursuit of two legendary swords continues when Soulcalibur IV is released in 2008. Developed by Project Soul, (the legendary team behind Soul Blade and Soulcalibur I - III), Soulcalibur IV re-introduces classic warriors from the series as well as introduce new characters that bring new conflict and intrigue.

Action / Adventure Games:

Huxley

Publisher: Webzen
Developer: Webzen
Release Date: TBA 2008
Genre: Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter

Huxley looks amazing, the very impressive gameplay trailer showed off the depth-of-field effect that realistically blurs objects in the foreground or in the distance, depending on what you're focusing on. The characters themselves are rendered in vivid detail. For example, you can see the bulging forearms of a soldier, as well as facial self-shadowing, like the shadows on his cheeks and neck. A swarm of giant insect like creatures then entered the scene. Aside from the amazing visuals, Webzen is promising to provide gamers with the biggest online multiplayer experiences we have ever seen on any console.

Huxley is a massively multiplayer online first person shooting game utilizing the Unreal 3 engine to create a world of up to 5,000 players in the same gaming environment. Huxley takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where human beings have mutated and are divided into two opposing races, Sapiens and Alternative. At the center of the battle for survival is Lunarites, a promising new energy source highly coveted by both races. Forced to battle against one another for the continuance of each race, Sapiens and Alternatives will do whatever it takes to wipe out the opposition and gain control of the world and its resources.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game

Publisher: Sierra
Developer: Terminal Reality
Release Date: Q3 2008
Genre: Action Game

The Ghostbusters: The Video Game storyline is being written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, the writers of the original films and they along with Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson will lend their voices and likenesses to the game. Several supporting cast members, such as William Atherton (Walter Peck), Brian Doyle Murray (as the team's psychiatrist, who may be the same character he played in Ghostbusters II) and Annie Potts (Janine) have also signed on.

The game puts you in the middle of Manhattain where ghosts and other supernatural beings have overrun the city, it's up to you to take on the role of a new recruit joining the original, famous Ghostbusters team. Equipped with a variety of unique weapons and gadgets, you will hunt, fight and capture a wide range of uncanny phantasms and demons in an all-new, funny and frightening battle to save New York City from its latest paranormal plague.
