OMG... I thought that Project Ego was suppose to span the whole life time of the character. Now, at GDC, The developer has specified that it will have a playing time of aboot 20 hours!! I thought the game would last for a lot, lot longer..

Here's what he had to say:

"For those who feel disappointed:
Remember, we're trying to make an RPG for people who would usually never consider buying an RPG.

We asked a whole load of people what they thought would stop them from buying RPGs. The feedback we received overwhelmingly supported a richer, denser, more intense experience. They actively HATED feeling that they had to trawl through a huge game and (in 80% of cases) would never finish it.

We want people to realise that there are numerous ways to play the game. With 100+ hours, nobody would ever bother, or even find out. That would be a waste of our core game concept."

Man, that news is like music to my ears! Here I am, a person not sure if they are, at all, an RPG fan, and they are making a game for people that normally don't make RPGs! Now, if this game isn't more tailored to what I am looking for, then, I have no idea what else it could be! This is great news for me!

Personally, I do feel sorry for those who were expecting a long long long long long ass game...but, like any RPG, you can make it as long as you want. So, it's not all that bad... Even if it is only 20 hours long, there are several different types of endings, so, the possibilities are endless! You can be good, bad, in-between, or whatever you want. Your mission is to basically find out who killed a family member, if I recall. You can do this kindly as you want or as ruthless as you want. So, the way I see it, is that the game will be very long because of the replay value :)

It's not like there won't be other super long RPGs coming out for the X. Guess they're trying to wrangle the biggest audience they can by taking a slightly different approach to the RPG genre, perhaps inject some originality into it.

Hmmm. That doesnt seem to be a whole lot of time, but I was thinking the same thing as Maximus. There will probably be so many different ways to go, that you can have 100+ hours of play. But, we will have to wait and see fella's!

I hope your write. I truly feel that a lot of people about fell out of there chairs when they read it would only be 20 hours. I can see making games shorter but 40 to me is more of a sweet spot for the money. But on the other hand, with pe, maybe the different characters and what not make for some pretty unique replay and then that might make up for it.

I doubt thats the case. They say it will probably take 20 hours to finish. Most people would try to do their best with this game, so taking the minimal would probably be less than 20 hours, and doing your best would probably take around 20 hours. I think that the 20 hours is a time sugggestion for an all right finish.

Well, I've always got THPS3 to play!!!

I'm dissapointed that Project Ego is going to be only 20 hours. I really like long RPGs. This sucks. I thought this was going to be the greatest RPG with the best graphics and gameplay, and a long, expansive story, and now its just a short, newbie RPG. I wanted this RPG more than any other. I don't really like the look of Morrowind. It has weird looking characters. IGN said it didn't have good graphics. Now I've got nothing to look forward to. Maybe Final Fantasy will come to Xbox. Star Wars: KOTOR might be cool. As for Project Ego---->rental. I think I'll remove the Project Ego character from my sig.:(

Unless it has good replay value, then thats pretty bad. 20 hours...

Unless I missed a lot of important things, or I'm extremely bored, I won't play a game more than once.

Actually the minimum time it will take is 20 hours, if you go straight from beginning to the end, with no optional side quests and don't get caught up in anything. ex. thrown in jail, join a clan of thieves.

Like Maximus said, the object is to find out who killed someone in your family, in reality you could do this in 3 days, 3 weeks or 30 years. This only makes the game more open-ended for the user.

As for gameplay, he promises players at least "20 hours of amazing incredible gameplay if you play straight through with no distractions or side quests. But your character could get thrown in jail for ten years; he could get married, have kids and take a break from adventuring or choose any of a number of other ways to play the game. We are balancing the game around great entertainment, not on how difficult we can make it."

ok, that sounds a bit better,
but there is no way that the game can be as in depth as was promised with only 20h...
hope that the side quests are really in depth and long...:D

well 20 plus hours of game play sounds good to me. for one i never played a RPG in my life . so a 100 plus hours sounds great but some people dont have to time to play that long of a game.so 20 plus hours is like getting your feet wet to the world of huge RPG's that will take up most of your time.

this makes me feel better. I am sure all will work out once the game is released.

i agree...20 hours is perfect...giving players the option to take their time as long as they want and not having to feel rushed...20 hours straight through is better than 100+ hours...think about it...who would actually play 100+ hours of the same thing, over, and over, and over again? with 20 hours, you can do a whole lot...especially with open endings and story developement...you can be good the first tiem you play it, then bad the next...or even save the world in your underwear the 3rd time you play it(yes this is possible)...so 20 hours is just right...it will give the game replayability, without having it to be repetitive:)

20 hours is completely garbage.... that is just pathetic. You don't create a game that is an RPG based on time development and make it a couple days long...how useless of a game would that be???

20 hours is appauling and is making my stomach turn. For all the people who said, this is great because I dont like playing long RPGs...DONT PLAY THEM THEN! And stop ruining great ideas like this just because your attention span is based around more action oriented games.

Molyneux will be sadly mistaken if he claims this will be the best RPG ever and only makes it a straight 20 hours to beat it...what a waste of time!

If the world grows around me, I don't want it to grow in a matter of minutes in front of my eyes. I want to put in a good months worth of time on the game and come back to something and be blown away because it has evolved and changed...

I sincerely hope this game turns out to be like Morrowind with tonnes of gameplay upping in the hundreds of hours because that is what this premise is all about...TIME!!!!

**** man, what is wrong with people! It's completely illogical to have it so short!

woocifer, calm down, no need to throw a hissy fit, while 20 hours is a let down, maybe the guys are right and thats only if you do nothing but find the killer of your family, hopefully it can spread out into closer to 100 hours if you do other stuff, oh well, and look i just ate my eye :p

Not a hissy fit, just aggrivation... they come out with a great idea and premise behind the game and then make is silly just because Joe Public doesn't like RPGs....

It's commercialism at its finest ruining another cool idea... I'm sick of the masses screwin everything up is all :)
