The springtime air is upon us, the birds are returning from their journey south, and it’s time get polish up the clubs and get ready for a relaxing afternoon on the fairways. Just what you’d expect this time of year right? Well you aren’t the only one getting ready for the upcoming golf season. This year you will be joined by a few newcomers to the pleasure sport of golf. Doc is taking plenty of time off of his busy schedule to ensure his tee times. The only problem is that Doc is currently under investigation for many malpractice suits, but he doesn’t seem too worried about that right now. Wannabe rapper Ice-Trey is also getting ready for the action on the greens. A recent high school drop-out, Ice-Trey is playing to achieve his goal of being a profession golfing rapper. That’s all we need…another golfing rapper.
Welcome to Outlaw Golf, the wildest golfing game you have ever seen and you can bet you won’t find any high brow sportsmen talking about this one at their board meetings. This is a golfing game for the average golfer who likes to throw temper tantrums and toss a few clubs here and there. There’s nothing more relaxing then a nice pleasant game of golf. If you find yourself under par or off your game, don’t let the stress get to you. Take it out on your caddy instead. A swift club to the side of the face is always a sure-fire way to release some tension and get you back in the game. Outlaw Golf is everything you wouldn’t expect in a game based on one of the most respected and classiest sporting events in history.
When I first heard that the game was coming to the Xbox I thought back to the days of summer when my friends and I would spend the afternoon at our local country club. Every now and then I’d have a pretty good day, but most of the time I was hitting more divots than golf balls. Outlaw Golf is a game for golfers who find driving the cart at high speeds more fun than the game itself. Have you ever gotten so upset at landing in the sand that you dragged the rake over the green, marking it up in frustration? Then you should feel right at home with Outlaw Golf’s crazy bunch.
Don’t let all the humor throw you off though, Outlaw Golf has quite an impressive golf engine that was designed for the game. While the game is about having fun rather than perfecting your stroke, the physics and controls of the game are the best ever that I have played. Running on the most advanced golfing engine ever created, Outlaw Golf features the newly invented Composure Response System (CRS). The better you play, the smoother the controls become. The worse you play, the harder the controls become. Makes sense doesn’t it? When you’re on the top of your game your swing will become stronger and your accuracy will improve, but if you find yourself slicing or pulling the ball you’ll have to regain your composure in order to improve. Don’t worry though because the CRS system will help you in a couple different ways. You can help your game, by focusing, concentrating, and getting yourself under control. However, when that doesn’t work out, you can always beat the tar out of your caddy.
While the game is nearing completion, Outlaw Golf is a heck of a sports title that is quite addictive. The game starts out with 4 different golfers to choose from. You’ll have the choice among Harley, a tom-boy biker babe with attitude; Ice Trey, a high school drop-out who dreams of becoming a professional rapper; Summer, a stripper who flaunts her goods while on the course; and El Suave, the self-proclaimed ladies’ man from Tia Juana. You’ll be able to unlock more characters as you play the game which is well worth the time. When you win enough matches to play as Mistress Suki with her man-gimp caddy, you’ll know what I’m talking about.
The game starts out with 3 courses to choose from; Turnpike Valley Country Club, Crusty Leaf Country Club, and El Diablo Country Club. Each course is unique in style and design and each come with different types of obstacles that you will have to overcome. You’ll have to play around everything from high-ways to nuclear power plants.
Without giving too much away before doing a full review, I will tell you that I was very pleased with the game in its current state of development. Outlaw Golf is a lot of fun to play with its twisted and humorous take on the game of golf. The game also features a great control system that makes playing more precise and gives the game a great feel. To swing you simply pull back on the directional pad and push forward when you reach the right amount of power for your swing. Your accuracy is controlled by the direction in which you push the pad forward. If you push the pad directly forward, your ball will travel straight, but if you move the pad off center you will either slice or pull the ball depending on how far off center you go. As you loose or gain composure, the sensitivity of the directional pad will increase and decrease.
Loaded with various types of games including Match Play, Skins, Timed Matches and more, Outlaw Golf has plenty of gameplay options to keep you interested. The game’s graphics are colorful and the textures are detailed. The audio is sharp and witty enough to get a few laughs out of you while you play. Outlaw Golf gives the average golfer who doesn’t have a prayer in the PGA a chance to shine, while helping you improve your right hook and club tossing skills at the same time.
