The person whom many people consider to be the chief architect of the Xbox, as well as its spokesman and primary advocate within Microsoft, resigns.

Seamus Blackley, one of the Xbox's most outspoken proponents within Microsoft and co-creator of the console has resigned from Microsoft. According to a Reuters news report Mr. Blackley "…left Microsoft to pursue other opportunities," said James Bernard, an Xbox spokesman at Microsoft. "We value his contributions."

The news of Blackley's resignation comes very shortly after Microsoft said it would miss its fiscal year-end sales target for the Xbox by as much as 40 percent. The Xbox has had weaker than expected sales in Europe prompting a recent price cut. The Xbox is also not faring as well as hoped in Japan.

Blackley's spokeswoman said he would not be ready to discuss details of the new venture for another two weeks at least, and she gave no indication as to what type of business the new company will pursue.

UPDATE:
It looks as if Seamus isn't leaving because of perceived poor performance of the console. Xbox spokesman David Hufford said "It's not much of a surprise." He noted that Blackley had accomplished his mission - to get the Xbox out.

According to the latest reports, Blackley resigned his position at Microsoft to join an undisclosed game-industry start-up. It would appear that he isn't really "leaving" - we could see him at this year's E3 after all.

Hopefully he's going to use his inside knowledge of xbox to make awsome games for it.

Go read the interview with him over at gamespot... It explains that his primary reasoning was that he simply wanted to get back to creating high-quality innovative games. Not so bad if you ask me.

His mission was to get the XBox launched. Once the project is finished, then, what else is there to do other than watching it be successful? Seamus Blackley, at heart, is a Project Manager. And, Project Managers simply start projects from inception, put the teams together to get the project worked on and completed, and when it's launched, it's time for something new. This happens every single day for many companies. It's how the business world works.

Btw nice article, I think Seamus Blackly will be more beneficial to xbox from his native point of view. And why not he did a hell of a job with the machine. Lets all raise our glass to the man who made it all possible, maybe this time around the stale air will be freshened up in the gaming industry.
