April 24, 2002 - We had the chance to take a look at the latest Xbox version of Turok: Evolution, which we last saw running in late January. One of the notable additions to Turok: Evolution over the past few months comes in the way of weapons. Acclaim only gave us a glimpse of what's to come,
but a few of them were very impressive. Very much like the Spider of Death (our tentative name), Acclaim Austin still has a few tricks up its sleeves for intriguing weaponry. Unfortunately they excluded the Spider of Death from this latest version. Drat.

Before we talk about a few of the new weapons, it's important to come to an understanding regarding their branching nature. Every weapon in the game has a root function. From here Turok can get upgrades to increase
their abilities. For example, in our last hands-on we told you about a simple pistol, which could fold out into an advanced sniper rifle. The weapons aren't limited to just two functions, though. You'll find Tal'Set's tools of destruction reach even three or more (though we've yet to see this).

In the last version of Turok we saw in January, Acclaim showed us hand-grenades, but their secondary function wasn't active. As we found out with our updated hands-on, the large, cylindrical hand-grenades can also be used as proximity mines. With the simple press of a button you can activate this secondary function, whereupon a set of spikes ejects around Tal'Set's hands (keeps things interesting). At this point the spiky projectile can be stuck to walls and even enemies. When they explode, they'll send those loser Dinosoids flying into the sky, literally. Getting a little more explosive the grenade launcher will return into Tal'Set's hands, which sends seemingly volley-ball sized
grenades exploding in the midst of enemies -- if your aim is right. Looking for an even faster means of ridding enemies? Just call on the power of the railgun, which will take them out very quickly. We also got a chance to view the updated effects for the flamethrower. Dave Dienstbier and his Austin-based team have included a very nice heat
distortion effect for a little eye-candy. When you hose down enemies with the fiery liquid that spews forth it will set them ablaze, running around frantically as they futilely attempt to calm the flames. Sadistic, yes, but definitely called for.

Another clever weapon came in the form of what appeared to be a sort of heat-seeking, enemy tracker. A group of small purple orbs chase the enemy down, regardless if they attempt to run away. The idea is to let you fire off a few at enemies and then switch guns to focus on others while the purple orbs do their job. They explode upon impact. Not exactly what we were hoping for, but as noted Turok: Evolution is still very early -- about 60%.

Finally, we should mention what is perhaps one of the coolest, most destructive weapons we've seen yet. What would Turok be without weapons that make you drool thanks to their gore factor or ability to wipe an entire species from the planet. The unnamed weapon is the third function
of what we believe was the grenade launcher. It's all a big blur really, because we were so dazzled by its effect. Basically, a set of blue, fork-like prongs poked out of the nose of the gun. The two U-shaped prongs rotated around each other, letting you charge up a white ball of light (not one of healing) and fire the energized orb into the distance. At first, it doesn't appear to be having any effect on anything around it. You question what all the hub-bub is about and wait for something to happen. Still, you wait in patience and suddenly the orb explodes, sending out waves of energy as seen in nuclear test footage. Every enemy in close proximity will be sent flying up into the air in a cloud of debris and burning, radioactive gas. A very impressive sight, we assure you.

Sadly, this was most of the new weapons we had a chance to see. The much-touted "Swarm Bore" was nowhere to be found, and some of the bloodier, bladed tools are still being shrouded in secrecy. We dearly hope to see more at E3 next month.

Be sure to check back tomorrow for a full write-up regarding the rest of the progress Turok has made.

Nice post, DZNutz!!!! That's one of the reasons why I am so pumped up about the new Turok! I love the sadistic weaponry that this game has! Much of it is satirical in nature, which makes this game stand out among the rest :D I mean, what I really love about this game is that it makes killing enemies much more enjoyable since you have so many options to obtain the same end result :D I can't wait for this one! Port or no port, Turok is a must buy :)
