I replaced my VCR with my xbox. Now here is the question...If I get all of my old VHS tapes burned onto DVD-R's, will the xbox play them?

To my understanding....no. But, then again, I think it wouldn't be all that worth it anyway since recording a tape to a disc isn't that great. I would just use the VCR instead. Just my $0.02 :)

Actually, although the X-Box won't play CDRs, CDRWs, nor VCDs, Sound & Vision revealed in their May issue that they it will playback DVDR and DVD-RW discs recorded in the standard DVD format. They even got it to playback DVD+RW discs recordered on the new Phillips DVD recorder.

So, it sounds like it is possible to do what you want with the box!

Enjoy...DB:)

Last time I checked at futureshop a DVD-R was something like $20, and a new DVD movie is about $20. Why even bother?

I just bought a bunch of DVD-R discs for $1.68 each.

If you have a way to defeat the Macrovision copy protection on your VHS tape the quality wouldn't be any worse than the source...but it won't be any better, either.

I found this and was wondering what exactly it would be used for, but maybe this could be used to defeat the Macrovision problem that Hugh_Jass mentioned:

Hot New Product Macro Master Video Stabilizer
Macrovision protection a problem? Not any more !
Mac Master adaptor allows you to watch films from any DVD player, Video recorder, Digital TV or Pay per view channel through your video using the SCART or phono-output of the device and the SCART-input on your video recorder. If you have attempted this before you will of noticed many strange effects on the screen such as a rolling picture, smeary video levels and the most common, picture going light and dark - you have experienced MACROVISION. This is the copy protection system used on all films from Pay per view to DVD.

The Mac Master was developed because of the shortage of SCART sockets on televisions. Because the output from a DVD player is either SCART or phono if you do not have a SCART socket available on your TV how can you watch your digital quality film? Easy you think, I will simply connect the SCART lead to my video and watch it through my TV, not so fast my friend you have forgotten about MACROVISION, that's right your video recorder will detect the MACROVISION software and totally confuse its video processor giving the effects described above. Mac Master will filter out the MACROVISION as it is played into the SCART of your video recorder which I am sure you will agree opens up a whole new range of possibilities.

Why do you say that the XBOX can't play CDRW. If you couldn't how come you can burn your songs on the XBOX HD with CDRW. Everybody knows you can do that !!!!!!!!!
