Well, yeah, read the subject. When XBOX Live is up, will XBconnect and Gamespy close?
im asking ths because I probably wont be able to get XBOX Live cause of the money factor (maybe) it might be better for me to play for free.

u nailed it... there will be a lot of people who dont want to pay i think... there will probably be some people on xbconnect and all, but probably not as good of people. and if they dont release an expansion for halo there will probably be a lot of people on

they'll still exist for direct connexion games using sytem link. People who won't want to pay for xbxo live will probably use these services.
Id be willing to wager that once XBL launches, MS will try to shut down GS and XBC, PDQ.
Hows that for good use of abbreviations? :)

I'm sorry sinizuh, but only being 15, buying the system, 4 games now, 3 controllers, dvd remote, exteneded warrenty, just finally convincing my parents to get onto Rogers Cable..
how can I be called a cheap ass bastard...
I'm willing to wager that lots of people here saying theyll go pay for XBL, will never do so, simply because if something is free, they will sacrifice a tiny bit of service for no charge.

Its much more than a tiny bit of service. Also, remember that if a game is Xbox live, that doesn't mean you'll be able to play on Gamespy, XBC, etc.. they have to be system-link compatible.
So, yes they will stay alive.. tons of ppl will continue to play Halo, etc.. but the services will not be able to play all the games that Xbox live will. I'm also willing to bet that MS put some money into encrypting data schemes, and other methods, to ensure that ppl that want to play xbox live games will have to do so on their network only. What does this mean? Probably won't be seeing a gamespy II that plays xbox live games.

I think Microsoft will see these mediums as "system-sellers" in and of themeselves. They'll provide the impetus for the thrifty to play X-Box games on-line and will also function as an outlet for those who may want to play Halo (One), years from now. So I think they'll leave 'em alone; they like 'em!

Well, if you think about it, wwfraven2K, you can't play XBConnect or Gamespy on-line without having broadband. And, when you use those free services, you will have a certain level of lag issues. However, with XBox Live, lag will not exist at all and for a mere $49.99, you get 12 months of service + the XBox Communicator (the headset that will allow you to talk and listen to others on-line) + I understand that the game: ReVolt is included. I think this is an amazing value!!!

XBOX Live will become so big that Gamespy and XBConnect will die because of lack of participation.
$50 for the Communicator, 12 month subscription AND a game??
who won't go for that??
i know i will... heck, i'll buy it twice :)

hmmm...
Gamespy = 4 person Halo with lag
XBLive = 64 person Battlefield 1942 with voice com without lag.
sacrifice a tiny bit of service indeed.

It's a no-brainer, $49.99 for the communicator, free on-line game, and 12 months of service? This should be a first day purchase for all broadband and Xbox owners. That deal cannot be beat, if you miss out on it, you are really missing out!!!

I'm not sure! But, one thing is for sure, I definately won't have any! Personally, I think the network is going to be so screaming fast that no one will have any lag no matter where they are located. I think they are running servers that are over 7 Terabytes per second!!!!

I was told by a couple dudes that I know that work for Microsoft. They are both working with the XBox team. Last Friday, I played with them during my first 16-man Halo System Link party...good times. I think they said that it will be 7.3 Terabytes per second...that is some serious bandwidth!! Connecting to those servers even with broadband is so smooth...so smooth that it makes a baby's butt feel like sandpaper :D

So let me get this straight...it lags so much on XBC and gamespy because the host is the server. So when I join a game, with a host of 400 upload, it is basicly like I am running off of his server? So why doesn't Gamespy have servers with a fast connection? Maybe not 7.3 telabytes, but at least 3000 kbp/s.

One thing I really like about what MS is doing with XBL is that they are making it universal and having standards. Every game you buy that supports XBL will have to support the features that XBL states, like Voice Communicator, matching making from any game etc. This is very commendable of MS and definately make it worth the $50 a year with all the goodies.
What I still won't judge until I see it is lag free gaming. Theoretically that is impossible no matter how fast their servers are. It will always come down the the end user and the net conjestion. I do believe that MS is doing everything they can to make sure that it wont happen on their end, but there isn't a single broadband service provider around doing the same thing on their end. Not Cox, not ATT, not Roadrunner, not Qwest etc etc. If the pipes get full from neighbors or neighbors in other States surfing the net then there is nothing we could do about it, or MS.
Also, geographical location doesn't always mean you will get a fast connection. Alot of ISP's route their traffic through a central server located somewhere in the country no matter where you reside. Like AOL for instance. All of their traffic gets routed through a central server in Virginia. So if you are in Oregon and want to talk to someone in Washington, your traffic is going to go all the way to Virginia, then back to Oregeon, minimum. This isn't always the case but more times than not. Just do some traceroutes and you can find out.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to dis the XBL network. I think it will be one of the best online gaming experiences available and I've been thoroughly impressed with MS to this point. I just don't people to get hopes up that there will be no lag when there very well could be especially with complicated games with 32-64 players. But it will be nothing like Gamespy or XBC. :)

Well, that's up to Gamespy. It's a completely different format. Only the gamers that host the games act as a server...Why doesn't Gamespy run their own? Probably financial issues.
Also, by the way, it's called "terabytes", not "telebytes". That is miraculous speed! It's Trillion bytes per second! XBox Live is going to be sweeeeet!! :D

So basicly, it will be like playing your PC online? Some lag, but not too much. (Excpet everybody will be on broadband! ) Esp. on the the MSN Zone.

You make a great point, however, I believe that since it will be broadband that it will minimize the potential for lag. My guess is that the ping will not exceed 20ms :)

You are right, it will minimize but it will not eliminate lag. One thing that is different with XBL than regular online gaming on the PC is that there will be alot more information going through the pipes especially with the voice communicator. Some broadband providers can't support that even though they are still broadband.
I guess the general point I was trying to make is that it will ultimately come down to your ISP and internet traffic. Microsoft looks to be completely prepared for every sole in the the US to connect so I don't think any problems will come from them.

Does MSN have a broadband ISP now? Or do they piggyback like AOL does with broadband? You still get their 'special' services but you are going through AT&T's cable network.
It's a good question. :)

So Max, looks like with MSN you would still be dependent on your cable or DSL provider and their network.

I wonder how laggy it's gonna be for me. My local dsl is pretty weak, doesn't seem alot better then 56k. And it is also ATT.

I think that Microsoft will be running so much damn bandwidth that it's going to be very interesting to see what happens. I think it's going to be a success. One thing is for sure, Microsoft is crossing their perverbial "Ts" and dotting their perverbial "I's"

Quit your whining! I have ATT, and my upload never exceeds 128! So there! But I do have 2500 download...not bad.
This is wierd though, my granma, lives about 2 miles away from me. She has att cable also, but her upload is 250+. Unfortunately her download is 1000...but why does she have a MUCH higher upload? It is almost double!  :(

Pretty much. You can only go as fast as your slowest link, and in terms of LIVE that will be your local ISP. Got a slow broadband provider, you will probably lag on LIVE. Got a screaming ISP and you probably won't ever have a problem.
