as i said...i ordered a years worth of dsl and the proper equipment just so i could whoop ya'll up on xboxlive!!!

i have recieved the equipment package in the mail and i have a few questions.

the DSL service i got is provided through SBC.....and i belive it includes a free earthlink account(s?) ...and i have yet to begin installing the filters and such.....and the only comp in the house so far is my Sony laptop model # PCG-FX290. so here are my questions...

1. i'm oviously gonna wanna also take advantage of downloading net content faster on my laptop......but from what i think is included in the dsl package...it looks like the equipment is for a desktop pc.....do i need anything special for my model laptop....or is it built in...how can i find out. ( or maybe some of u tech heads out there could find out for me ;) )

2. i use aol as my isp.....will i still be able to use dsl speeds with aol...or only the earthlink isp that comes with the dsl deal( i'm guessing aol will work...but i'd like to verify)

thanx in advance for the help ....and i'm sho i'll have more ?'s in the near future:)

DZ, what up boy? OK, I am about to go to lunch, but I will do a check on it for you while I'm eating....

First things first, is this your laptop? (http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/consumer/ss5/home/vaio/notebookmodels/pcg-fx290_specs.shtml)

u need an Ethernet card for your Laptop . . .

AOHell will work with DSL just set up a new location at the sign on screen . . .

BTW how do u plan on splitting the wire??? or will u switch the cable from ur comp to your xbox when u want to go online??

To answer your first question, i believe what they mean by "PC Version" is that they are sending you a PCI network card. PCI meaning the port-like thingy that it plugs into.
Laptops don't support PCI. They support PCMCIA cards. So in order to have a network connection on your laptop, it either needs a built-in LAN jack, or ya have to buy a PCMCIA network card...

Secondly, i dont think you can use AOL with your DSL. You have to go with a provider that supports DSL which looks to me like its Earthlink... but i could be wrong..

hope that helps...

First off it sounds like you will need to buy a PCMCIA NIC card for your laptop. Secondly get rid of AOL it's junk. AOL will work with DSL because it doesn't care if your dial-up or broadband as long as it sees a connection to the web it will work. You will just have to use TCP/IP instead of Dial-up adapter.

What i would do is buy a Linksys 4 port DSL/Cable router and hook your DSL into the router the your Laptop and your xbox into the built in 4 port switch.

Ok well after reading the specs you already have an intergrated NIC so just plug an RJ-45 (Cat5 Straight Through ) cable into the 4 port switch and you should be set.

So for future growth if you wanna hook upto the internet just plug a CAT 5 cable from the 4 port switch into your device.

Get a linksys 4 port Cable/DSL router model # BEFSX41 I think this is the model with the built in Firewall which is something you will want. The price ranges anywhere from 79.99 to 179.99 depending on what model you buy.

Yo DZ, what a coincendence homie! I was just calling up earthlink yesterday so I could get het details on getting connected to DSL since im getting a Laptop the end of August.

As for your questions.

1. you can use the DSL kit they sent you for your PC or Laptop, and like someone already said, you will need the Ethernet 10/100 card to connect which should come with your laptop. Or you can just get one at Best Buy or something for a few beans.

2. As far as I know you have to have an Earthlink account like you XBA Icon does in order to connect. It wont work with an AOL account. You will need to order a DSL kit from them in order to do so. And until Earthlink, AOL will charge you for the DSL Equipment.
Maybe im wrong, but I doubt it!:D

Also did they ask you about your phone line? Who do you pay your phone bill to? Cause mine is Verizon and they will have to run a line through your phone line at home in order to hook up.
Da dude yesterday told me I it would take up to 2-4 weeks for Verizon to clear my line and send me my DSL kit.

Hey, what kinda deal you get? The 6 months for $39.95?
You know there is a 12 month commitement right? After that 6 months it's $49.95 a month.
How about that, it's like buying a Xbox game every month without having one!:o

i got the deal where the kit and the installation is free....i year contract. i think 50 bones a month:(

anywho..it will be worth it...me and u gotta team up on some games and put the smackdown on others and represent xba ninja!;)

guess i'll call and try to find out about the whole aol thingy since theres conflicting answers here.

thanx 4 all da help ....keep it comming

u can deffinalty use DSL with AOL . . .

and unless u need 4 connection to the internet i would only get a 2 port router/switch . . . . but stay with LinkSys they r the best and easiest products . . . . u should get on XbConnect too its loads of fun

best price is prob best buy or circut city got mine for $80 and it was a 4 port

Chaotic
06-19-2002, 03:32 PM
They dont make a 2 port linksys router with switch.

It's considered a 1 port WAN, LAN without switch.

Just get the 4 port for future expansion.

But I heard Cable is better,Which is cheaper and which DSL/Cable service is the cheapest?THNX give me some suggestions and your DSL/Cable provider. THNX again

DZNUTZ
06-19-2002, 05:13 PM
yo tea.....i'm pretty sho it all depends on where u live in terms of pricing.

i heard cable is generally faster...but on the other hand...their was a thread a few days ago discussing how many cable companies are thinking aobut putting bandwith limitation on the customers...ie....download over a specified amount and you'll have to pay extra! i don't think this applies to dsl.

btw...big shout out to casper..yet another cool ash xba member who went out of his way to do a lil research and help a me out.

so far it looks as if i'm getting the following...

Belkin 14 Ft. Pro Series RJ-45 Shielded CAT-5e Patch Cable
Model: A3L791-14-YLW-S

14' yellow, snagless cable connects a PC with an Ethernet 10/100/1000 Base-T card directly to a 10/100/1000 Base-T faceplate, hub or patch cable. Transmission speeds up to 1000 Mbps. Gold-plated copper contacts.

and

Linksys EtherFast 4-Port Cable/DSL Router
Model: BEFSR41

Got a cable or DSL modem? Then you need this router. It offers high-speed connections from every station on your system, all from the same IP address. Includes a built-in firewall.

i'm told thats pretty much all i need...feel free to reply with agreements, comments and so forth....

btw..thanx again and big ups to casper and the rest of the xba's

right PPPoE

anyways i would return your cat6 and get cat5.

Cat6 gives you a ninth fiber channel and is useless in your case.

u have to CALL AOL and tell em' u got a new connection and u have DSL then u only pay like 9.95$ a month for AOL since ur not using AOL dialup phonenumbers and stuff ur using another connection thru another ISP.

k..heres the isp situation

i currently have unlimited dial up aol
and
unlimited broadband sbcglobal

now my house has broad band...but my work only has dial up

what i'm planning on doing (if possible and depending if its free or how cheap it is) is making it possible to use both aol and sbcglobal at work via dial up, and at home via broadband.

any comments?

and i'm sho i'll need someones help for xboxconnect and my router later.:(

Yo man, good deal. Stick with the CAT 6, it really doesn't matter, but since you got it, screw it, there's no sense of returning it. CAT 6 hasn't really been "announced" as the next step in cable yet, so it's not real popular, but it sure does the trick.

So what up with work man...I'm sitting here doin help desk and your stuck tryin to pimp some bonds huh? Ouch babe, must suck...but when I go to lunch in a few, I'll have a brew for ya...dam I love working in IT :p

Yo DZ, keep them both if you can. You never know when your gonna need the dial-up, especially if you use it at work. Also, you get some "extra" features with high-speed AOL (you can use AOL at home with the broadband). So stick with it....how much are they gettin ya for it anyways? :)

yo casper...jump on AIM...i don't quite get your ?

i'm deffinately planning on keeping both isp's..(cuz i don't pay for my aol;) )...but i need to know how i can configure em.

I heard from numerous amounts of peeps that Cable is better than DSL, but Cable is not available in my area as DSL is.
Both cost da same, so your not going wrong with either choice.
As long as you get dial-up out of your life, you will be a happy gamer!;)

Cable isn't always better than DSL. It really depends on your provider.

Hehe... I've got the LinkSys 4 port Cable/DSL router with built in firewall model #BEFSR41v.2. It's a great router, got mine for $99. It works great for me. if you need any help with the new firmware version: 4.7 AIM me it's Pyrodude0911
[version 4.7 includes extra feature like: Choose Connection Type: PPPoE, Obtain IP automatically, Static IP, RAS (for Sing Tel Users), and PPTP.]

EDIT: I replied before I saw the second page of the thread. Seems like a lot of ppl have that model. I forgot to mention.... I can't get mine to work with XBConnect:rolleyes:

And is PPoE where you have to log onto your broadband? Isn't it annoying?

They better have software for this, because #1, I want to get on xbox live! #2, I don't want to have to turn on my pc everytime I play xbox live!
