It's too early to talk about all this, we know. But it's too cool to ignore. We're talking more power than grampa's hearing aid!

The word on the street is that the PS2 is old school already. Well, not really, but Sony has managed to put together a crude prototype in order to show off the power it has in store for the PS3. A special effects production house, which asked not to be identified, said that Sony reps brought a makeshift PS3 to its offices recently in an attempt to establish development support.

While it should perk the ears of many, it should be noted that the prototype was not big on looks at the moment. The "prototype" was not an actual model of the unit itself per se, but rather a model of the power with, literally, six PS2 units stacked on top of one another connected with a pack of wires to a PC.

Sony showed off a few revamped demos that were used for the PlayStation 2, including one that allowed users to "fly" through a fantasy castle environment. The demo was reportedly technical in nature and geared more towards showing off the processing power rather than the graphics engine at this point, mostly because the chipset isn't finished and won't be for some time.

Does this mean that we should can the PS2 already and get ready for the PS3? Not quite. If you remember, back in late 1995 and early 1996, Ken Kuturagi made mentions of the mythical PS2 that would be appearing in the distant future of the year 2000.

It actually should be no surprise that Sony is already working on the replacement to this year's must have product. The PS3 name and logo has already been registered with Japanese authorities.

Also, at last year's Fall TGS, Shinichi Okamoto, Senior Vice President of Research and Development for SCE, spoke about Sony's intentions and goals for the PS3's power and performance. However, it is interesting to note that the first ones to get a glimpse of that power is not so much a developer, but a special effects production house.

The power of the PS3 is apparently hinged on parallel processing as noted by the wiring of six PS2 units together. Parallel processing is sort of a work-sharing set up that enables single-CPU architecture to assign work to multiple processors to maximize speed and efficiency.

Normally, this type of set up is reserved for more high-end computers with high-res graphics capabilities. Is the PS3 going to be like a PC? That remains to be seen, but the power is sure looking like it could be confused with one at this early stage.

Rest assured, there is nothing to worry about as far as the PS2's future. It will be the Peyton Manning of consoles for the next five years, meanwhile making the competition look more like Ryan Leaf. Don't expect to see the PS3 materialize in Japan until 2005. Just make a note that Sony is in this for the long haul and is gearing up for your future.

Put a deposit down on the PS3 just in case.

Well...if I were Sony...I would be worried. http://www.xboxaddict.com/ubb/wink.gif (True X fan here baby!) But..hey...even if they get close..competition is always healthy..but I don't think the Xbox has much to worry about. http://www.xboxaddict.com/ubb/wink.gif

Sony talked about a PlayStation 2 back in 1995/96, so I don't think it's strange they're slowly starting to air the idea of a PS3. My guess is that they've already started thinking about the PS3 chipset.

Perhaps it's because of the Xbox, but I don't really think so. We won't see a PS3 for at least 4-5 years, so let us just enjoy the PS2 and Xbox for now... http://www.xboxaddict.com/ubb/smile.gif

Sony is definitely sweating bullets. PS2's specs can't hold a candle to what the Xbox is capable of. So I can see why Sony is nervous, but like Samwise said, we probably won't see PS3 for a least 4-5 years.

Yeah, you're probably right, Chris since many people who preordered their PS2 won't get them until March 2001!! http://www.xboxaddict.com/ubb/smile.gif

who knows what plans may be in the minds of those at microsoft, but one major advantage of the xbox could be that possibility of upgrading. it uses a standardcpu, standard memory hopefully, and a standard hard drive. if they set things up right, you could just upgrade your xbox (with pieces you buy from microsoft) instead of buying a whole new system. then when the ps3 does come out, if your buddie's ps3 is faster than your xbox, you just buy a 1ghz cpu and slap it in.

I don't know... But I don't think it's Microsoft's intention to make the Xbox upgradable. After all they want it to be a console, not a PC. So even though it technically might be possible to upgrade the Xbox, I don't think MS will let people do it.

Did I make any sense here? http://www.xboxaddict.com/ubb/smile.gif

Ah... It's a great time to be a gamer! http://www.xboxaddict.com/ubb/smile.gif

BTW, what systems do you guys plan on getting? Just Xbox, or perhaps more next gen consoles?

I can only play on one console at a time. So my best bet is to not spend my money on any console but the Xbox. Really it's the only console you will need at the moment. Until the release of the Xbox2. http://www.xboxaddict.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well, for me, i've always been a hardcore pc gamer. But...the Xbox, and what's already known about it, has changed my attitude towards console gaming. (After managing a Babbage's for a number of years, I got to play first hand most of the great games for the consoles of the day..a.k.a. ps, n64, saturn..etc.) The PS2 looks good, but still dosen't impress me as much as the Xbox. Don't get me wrong, I know Sony will produce a good unit, but I'm going to wait for the Xbox.

Just remember this:

Take the power and features of the PS3 then multiply them both by 10...you'll then have the Xbox 2...running at bare minimum.

Sony might as well count on being in 2nd or 3rd place right now.

Sony is shooting themselves in the foot if they are looking at going with parallel processing.

You think it is hard to break even on the hardware when you have just one chip to worry about, just imagine 6.
