I don't remember seeing anything comfirming or denying this. But will you have to have your Xbox hooked up to your PC to use the Xbox Live service? It's not like I don't have a PC or a router. But will I need to do anything on the PC to make my Xbox "Live Ready"
I hope it's not, but I seem to recall picture I saw of Xbox Live's showing at E3, and it showed a cart being wheeled out onto a stage with a PC and an Xbox on it.
So I'm bot sure if it was just because the application that makes the Xbox Independent from a PC was just not finished in time for the showing. Or if it was because a PC was required for the service.
So could someone clear that up for me? It would just be too annoying for me, to be jumping back and forth between my entertainment center and my office, every time I wanted to play online.

No your just going to need to hook your broadband up to the Xbox. You'll need a hub or router if you want to use it with your PC too (and I dont know why you wouldn't). You'll just need to hook it up to the Ethernet port and install the software.

I actually had this same question and was going to post asking this until I saw this thread. Does that mean you must have your computer in the same room as your xbox or you will need a long wire to put it in another room?

On page 44 of the August issue of OXM it states:

..."If you're going to plug your Xbox directly into your broadband modem, you'll use a crossover Ethernet cable, or and Xbox sytem link cable"...

That's good news for the people without out enough cash to buy a router or hub. But I bought a Linksys 4 port, so I can share my connection wtih my computers and play online early with Gamsepy and such. It'll just be an extra hassle for anyone without a router.

At least it means less cost to attract more gamers!

If you want both your xbox and your computer hooked up to the net....yes.

Although, where in the hell did I read it, I think Linksys is coming out with a wireless ethernet adapter for the xbox. urgh. Let me try to find the link.

Here's the linksys press release:

It looks like you may have to purchase both the workgroup bridge and a wireless broadband modem (makes sense). Which could get expensive but I guess worth it if your xbox is nowhere near your computer.

Well,...if the gamer is paying $50+ a month to play Xbox live I'm sure he/she wont mind paying $100 for a router so they can also have broadband on their PC...I think if given the choice...id rather have broadband on my PC...and once again if you are paying for broadband, theres no point to not have a network to share that killer connection

ok i am confused... so if my comp is upstairs and my xbox is downstairs and i want internet for both i need a hub and some extremely long wire to go to my xbox?

You DON'T have to have a hub but it would be better to have one so you could share your connection without having to unplug the wire from the PC to the modem and plugging in the wire from the Xbox to the Modem when you want to switch and vice versa.

Yes you are right. You could alsi make the distance shorter if you drill a small hole in the floor for the "long" cord.

Frostberg = sellout. (ad in sig)

i already have holes drilled in my ceiling and walls for my cable... now i just have to make the hole bigger for the network cables.

Quick question, the Xbox NIC is just a plain ole 10/100MBPS nic, same as the ones in our computer. In other words, why would we need to a crossover cable to connect our xbox's directly to our cable/DSL modems if we use straight cables for our PCs? Crossover cables are only needed for NIC to NIC setups.

Oh sorry. I didn't catch that. I'm too lazy to edit the post. So...

YOU DON'T NEED A CROSSOVER CABLE (X-OVER CABLE)

There... Problem solved :D

EDIT: Well, I'm not exaclty sure about it now. Since that was an excerpt from this months OXM.

Hey you find me 10GBs of data transfer, 1GB of space for cheaper than $2.08 a month and I'll put it in my sig...and change hosts myself...
It's a service...

My Xbox and PC are like 4 feet away from eachother, so that's good either way.. I'm thrilled to hear that you just gotta plug your cable modem into the xbox and go (right??) .. But if I did want to have internet access and Xbox live at the same time, how much would a decent router cost?

Check http://www.buy.com and go with the 4 port linksys BEFSR41 V.2 Router, can't beat it.

I highly doubt xbox live wil be PC dependant... I'd say I'm almost sure of it. this is how they will prob do it. the Xbox live CD that comes out will install an internet module for the internet, and probably give you Xbox several options for connecting over the net, you will be able to plyug your High speed internte modem be it DSL or Cable(IT WIL HAVE TO BE ETHERNET) yuo then wil have to choos whether you want it to set up a internet connection (like a dial up adaptor) or connect via a LAN. Again this is my 2 cents.

The only thing that concern's me will it work with PPPoE? (My dsl:mad: ) They will have to have some way for xbox to send the name and password, right?
