View Full Version : Why do we have to pay $10 a month again?

I already pay $50 a month for Cable internet access, and since XBL in not an ISP, then why do we have to pay $10 a month? Just to play the games? That's ridiculous! Can't I just use my current connection to play?

well, the servers that microsoft has probly cost a ton of money. and nothing in life is free. and 10 bucks a month is hardly anything. if u can save 1 buck a day, then u have 30 bucks a month.:D

They will have to have multiple servers(and not cheap ones either) per game and they will be supporting several games at launch at which they will not be recieving a service fee... they will also have to pay monthy cost for bandwith.. do you have any idea how much a T3 line cost? I'm sure they will have to have multiple lines with the necessary bandwith to support all the all the games they are running. Not to mention support staff, for maintaince, etc. then there are all sorts of Misc fees ie electricity etc.... THAT's where your monthly fees go to.. belive it or not there thehy won't be making that much profit off of it... they will get the majority of their money by taking a small amount of money from a large ammount of peole... In today's world there are a lot of online services out there and they are charging a VERY competitve price, their price is probably a little above margial cost (not quite P=MC for you Econ majors)... well I hope this post helps you understand why they have to charge for the service.... VERY TRUE, Snoopy7548 I was just trying to make a point, That's why I said " I'm sure they will have to have multiple lines with the necessary bandwith to support all the all the games they are running"... a few other cost of the game(as if no one is sick of hearing about this ) are the cost of Customer Service Reps (ie Min salary of $25k per year) ... I used to play EverQuest, we only had to pay 9.95 a month, but it had THE WORST customer service. for all of you griping about the $10 a month you get what you pay for! but on a lighter note, I hope they continue to release system link games after Xbox live is launched(which I seriously doubt) I'd be a viable option to playing some games online... only time will tell. A rediculous amount of high-speed high-performance servers, four datacenters, full 24/7 staffing, gigantic amount of bandwidth and streaming fiber-optic lines, and incredibly large online user base. This is no cheap operation. The first year is only $49 and comes with the Xbox Communicator, Acclaim's ReVolt, and one full year of service.
I've payed $10/month for Asheron's Call and $14/month for Dark Age of Camelot. Played Asheron's Call for one full year and Dark Age of Camelot for 3 months. Those weren't cheap operations either, but they pushed people on crowded servers without enough bandwidth and didn't have a proper staff. Plus Asheron's Call was on the Zone.com, that's a lagging hell-hole. (play to experience :))
I for one am glad to see it's one fee for all our games.

Because Xbox Live will offer you:
* A dedicated broadband-only gaming network
*Games optimized for internet play (read: less lag, smoother play)
*Built-in voice communications
*No home network required and no PC required
*Buddy lists with the ability to invite friends to your game, even if they are currently playing a different game
*Special Xbox Live-only features and content
*Support for 64-player games (or more - depends on the game)
*Access to massively-multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) that probably won't work via System Link (and therefore not Gamespy)
*Of course, any game that supports System Link should still be playable via Gamespy so you can still have some online gaming for free. As it has always been, though, System Link games will not be optimized for internet play and you should expect to experience network problems and lag.

Thats ture but when XL comes out all the people who dont have access to broadband or wont pay to upgrade just for XBL will be on GameSpy and it will be a huge Lag fest . . . . like its not now :o . . . but it would be much worse

64 player games with no lag? thats really hard to believe. even games on CS with a t3 connection, that have like 20 people, it starts to lag a little. but 64 people is crazy, imagine 64 people in halo, that would fill up like a whole map, lol.:D

Well Tribes 2 allowed for 64 ppl on a server at once but damn was there huge lag if there was 40 or more ppl at once.

so do we have to pay the 50 and that is it or do we pay the 50 and then 10 a month.

$50 for the first year. $10/month after that.
btw, 64 players on xbox is MUCH MUCH different that 64 players on PC. all xboxes are built the same and have nothing running the background and everyone is on broadband. PC, anything goes.
and the first game to have 64 players is battlefield 1942. but once you divide 64 players up into 5 countries and different squads... you got a team of like... 10 players. Battlefield 1942 (done right) will be awesome.
and i'm sure there will be like 3000-5000 players playing MMORPGs at the same time.

lol, imagine 64 people playin cs at the same time, on the same map. that would be so crazy, lol.

Do you guys think a lot of people will buy star wars galaxies for the xbox? I mean like 25,000-100,000 people. This game looks amazing on the pc version that I was looking at and it should be almost the same. I was also reading that there will be add ons for it on the pc like any other game has but do you think the add ons if they have any will come to the xbox for free? Like we just have to download it off live. I was thinking probably not but I just wanted to hear other people's opinions.
Battlefield 1942 looks amazing too. I can't wait for that game to come out. Imagine being able to use 35 different vehicles and be all different classes in the army. There will be so many fps games that are coming to live that will be real good.

possibly. PSO on dreamcast had around 250,000 players. but that's not a MMORPG like star wars galaxies.

I just didn't want to go buy the xbox version and have no one to play with. My comp sucks but if I would rather play with a lot of people in this game.

NOT A CHANCE IN @#!!... I'm a ex-Everquest player, there's NO way Sony will do that(after seeing them release 4 expansion for the original EQ) sorry it's just not gonna happen.

this is my problem ...... I refuse to play everquest, asheron call (sp?) or any other game I have to pay twice for. meaning how much blood do they want from me I pay $50 for the game then I have to pay $10 a month to play with my boys?????? isn't that paying twice for the same product???? now if MS was to drop the prices on Live games then ok I can see it but I will not be participating in paying for anything twice. I mean if you put it in as a selling point the at least give the option of allowing me to host my own game for free. Ok I have cleared my chest.
let the flames begin:cool:

That's like saying you've already paid $30,000 for your car and you expect the gas to be free.
However, I do think that all XBOX Live games should also be playable via system link whenever possible.

Well the thing is not that the gas should be free but at least it is cheaper per year than the car note. example I pay 50 bucks for a game but $120 a year to play it. now if I paid 20 per game and 120 a year diff story I just think that live games should be LESS than non-live games. then again gas is catching up as of late  just my opinion

once you grow up and experience the world, you realize nothing worth having is free. And the free things in life are usually the crap that doesn't work after you've had it for 2 weeks. Take your pick, good stuff that costs money, or crap that doesn't.... I'll take the good stuff personally. =)

Good point but something better needs to be done with the pricing scheme. if you can alllow us 50 for the first year. why is it 120 every year after that? just wondering what I am paying for also I a just venting it would really depend on the games.

it's also akin to saying since you paid $300 for your xbox, you should get all 1st party xbox games for free.
the thread parent mentioned he already pays $50/month for his broadband. Obviously that has nothing to do with xbox live.
Nothing in life is free, boys. The sooner you learn that the better off you will be.

No when I bought my xbox I knew I had to buy games but don't try to use online gaming as a selling point on the main console. I guess I just have to wait and see what they are offering for my money. we will just have to see, but right now it is not looking very attractive IMO= In My Opinion.
