View Full Version : Xbox Phantasy Star Online To Carry Monthly Fee

Gamers who rankled at paying for Phantasy Star Online v.2 on Dreamcast might bridle even more at the planned pay structure for the Xbox version of the game in Japan. In addition to the game, ISP payment, and Xbox Live subscription ($50 for the first year, probably $10 a month after that) players of PSO for Xbox will need to cough up an additional fee every month for the Hunter's License. Offline play will, of course, still be free of charge.
There's no word yet on whether the US pricing structure will be similar, so keep your fingers crossed.

I just wanted to tell you all this since I hate this game so much! muahahahhahaha
Damn this sucks. I'm still adamant at not paying for a MMORPG!! Then again, maybe thats why I haven't played one yet...
I thought one of the cool features with Xbox live was that you only had to pay one fee and you could play ALL xbox live games without additional charges. This just sucks. No no.. this more than sucks. I don't want to pay 15$CAD (my own speculation)/month for Xbox live, 40$/month for my cable internet and on top of it all another 10$-20$/month to play a game. Its just ridiculous.

I don't wanna be a party pooper or anything, but haven't you guys noticed that anything about games in GD has been getting moved. Why? Because it says this:
Talk about the latest happenings of the XBox here. No game discussion
Now back to the topic, I M$ actually allowing this? If they do, that's a disappontment and they shouldn't even let them support XBL.
That's enough from me :)

Not a big surprise, they have always had to pay for it in Japan, even the original PSO on the DC had a fee in Japan. That does not mean we will have to pay for it over here, and if we do... Well it probably won't sell very well, if at all.

Was PSO charged for in europe and america?
While MS said MMORPGs would be charged for i thought PSO was a standard RPG not a MMORPG?

PSO v1 had no charge in NA and Europe, v2 however did. This being a port of v2 means that it may have a fee, but Sega will really be shooting themselves in the foot if it does end up having a fee on the box.

What really sucks is not that there may be a charge, but that it gives Japan another reason to avoid the XBOX.
I loved PSO, but if i have to pay an additional fee on top of my XBOX Live fee, i won't buy the game, in which case Sega looses more than MS.
There are plenty of other games coming out. I think the fee is because they are using Sega's servers and the Hunter function is on MS's servers. Not sure though.

this wont give the japanese a reason to avoid the xbox. Remember PSO was HUGE in Japan and it costed money AND was on the fledgling dreamcast. Trust me, they pay fee's for all their online games, they dont seem to mind.

They better not make us pay extra for star wars galaxies. That is one of the games I can't wait for. I think everyone is just reading something and jumping to conclusions. We just have to wait and see what happens.

it's not a MMORPG. and it's not worth it, if real MMORPGs come out for XBLive without extra costs (star wars galaxies and shining lore)

This is good news for us here in the U.S. That it might just mean that they wanna squeaze some more money out of Japan. But if they made us pay for it I dont know how many people would pay. Only serious gamers.... and I know that the (atleast where I live) PS2 fanboys would eat it up.

in the UK we didn't have to pay to play either PSO 1 and 2 so I think they are taking the pi55 if we have to pay for it now as you all said I don't mind paying for XBOX Live and my broadband but I'm not adding another £? for playing PSO
but I'm sure if your using Gamespys server I'm sure you won't have to pay anything the only thing you'll lose is using the headset, thats fine with me as I'm sure they will still be using the symbols which will give them what you are doing and also the quick text with pressing the right buttons to say something

Don't forget it only cost's $3 a month for pso. (at least for me it did) Still, I find it very dumb that they would charge for the PACK-IN game !! (it's the Japanese xbox live pack in game)

you want to explain to me how PSO is not a MMORPG? let's break the acronym apart shall we, Mega Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game.
hmmmm...... it has lots of people playing at the same time (Mega Multiplayer)
it is online (Online)
it is a role playing game (Role Playing Game)
put it all together and tada!... MMORPG!

Good thing I don't like games like that.
Now if they did a fee for a game like UC or Counter Strike or an RTS game well then I would drop Live like a bad habit and stick with PC gaming all around.
Hopefully this won't be common practice.

so you wouldn't pay for a stable connection for a game with no cut off, I'd pay about £5 and I'm sure you'd pay $5 for this
lets see how it'll cost to get this service up and running

No I wouldn't since I already get a stable connection for free. I have for years. Why would I want to start paying now? I don't know where you guys play where you are always getting cut off or with lag etc. Sounds like you have poor ISP's which won't help with LIVE anyway.
Besides, you are talking about service that hasn't been tested nor proved to have no drop offs, lag, packetloss, and other hic-ups yet everyone is ready to drop money for it. I'm not saying that it won't or can't be like that but I will have to see it first.
But I was talking about paying a fee per game which I thought MS was against from the getgo. That I will not do no matter how good the service is. A small monthly fee to play all games I could handle although still weary about. I'll spend the $50 for the first year starter kit and then play it by year.

yeah maybe your right Lynx we have no idea how this thing will work, I haven't got broadband yet I'm just getting myself ready for it, the cheapest I found over here is £23 which is fine and to pay another £5 on top of that to get the headset working is fine for me too but who know it maybe less,
I've had a look at the cost of your US XBOX Live and it looks like it's going to be $9.99 a month I'm not sure if thats expensive or not, I think it is as if your getting your headset and one years XBOX Live for £49.99 you should pay about $4.16 a month for the XBOX Live to continue the months after, Now I'm sure this cost is cheap enough for you
I'm just wandering as I hear PSO will ask $? to play which I think there taking the pi55 if they want people to pay for the DSL/cable with the XBOX Live and then have to pay even more cash just to play this game

Yes that is exactly what I was complaining about. The 'extra' fee for a particular game. I thought it was MS whole goal to make it one fee and play all games. RPG's and MMORPG should be no different.
$4.16 a month is definately cheap. :)

I played PSO back when it was on the Dreamcast for free. There is no need for me to play basically the same game again and get charged for it. I got my PSO fix already.
