Can you trap NPC's in Soul Gems?

I was wondering if I messed up by not trapping Trebonious' soul in a soul gem when I killed him and became the Arch Mage of the Mage's Guild.

You can only trap 'monsters', not humanoids, although I'm not sure about vampires. I think you wouldn't be able to trap those, thoguh.

I captured the Ash Vampire Dagoth who lived underneath Kogorhun (not an actual vampire like one of the clans, mind you). I thought he might be as good as an Ascended Sleeper or Golden Saint. Unfortunately, he wasn't.:(

The only true humonoid you can capture is Vivec in Azura's star.

I think it's more about how the game considers things. Vivec is trappable because the game treats him like a 'monster'. Most of the other humanoids aren't on that monster list the computers has.

Although, it's interesting to note that you can cast Soul Trap on humanoids. They don't really like it, though.
