Microsoft destroying Nintendo

Here's something interesting from Xbox AU.

2 days ago (and counting) a Patent past in the U.S which may decide the ending of this console war. Microsoft bought the rights too some very important technologies in OpenGL.

What effect will this have on the gaming market you ask? Gamecube's GPU uses OpenGL. Microsoft can simply raise the price of the OpenGL licence to astronomical figures and single handidly ruin gamecube financially.

But will Microsoft do it? It's shocking publicity, and the US government will be at them for anti-compeditive behaviur. But knowing Microsoft, Gamecube is as good as dead.

i dont think they would want to do that because im sure more than just gamecube uses that, im sure the PC uses it so that would be dumb for them to raise the price.

Nah, they won't do that. OpenGL isn't just used on GC. they will just be hurting theirselves and killing their system and company if they did that.

Its a no-lose situation for MS. They already are beating the GC in the states. So even without raising the prices, they can turn around the money they will make on the open gl rights off nintendo, and turn it right around into xbox ad or dev dollars.

Microsoft should tell Nintendo that all games that use microsoft patent parts of OpenGL have to be recalled and rewriting to not use any of the patent parts!! That would hurt the GC more to have to rewrite all games & SDKs then licence fees!!

Why would it still hurt Microsoft? Xbox doesnt use open-GL.

I think MS would like nothing better than to pull the best parts out of OPEN GL and kill the standard. MS uses DirectX.

Well if they did something outrageous it wouldn't surprise me. I don't think they'd be too worried about more hatred toward them for it. WIth $40+ billion you can buy more friends than you lose.
