While From Software's premiere Xbox offering Murakumo hit Japanese shelves last week, several other projects for Microsoft's console are progressing through development. One of most interesting, Otogi, promises to build upon From Software's expertise in the RPG genre. To discuss the game's unique design, director Takeuchi-san and senior planner Yamada-san recently spoke with Famitsu Xbox.

Famitsu Xbox: The world of Otogi has been described as totally unique compared to From Software's previous RPGs. What can we expect?

Takeuchi-san: The game is going to be set in a traditional Japanese style world. We wanted something subtle, but an atmosphere that conveyed the game's theme to the player. Considering the game's story, we chose the title 'O-to-gi' because it's the Japanese word for fairy tale. We wanted the game to be engaging but also fun, and despite our short period cycle, we also wanted to include interactive backgrounds. Based on those factors, we decided to set Otogi in Japan's Golden Age of history which was from 794-1185 AD. That time period featured a variety of bamboo and wooden architecture which are ripe for destruction. Recently there have been several games set in that period, but From Software has never attempted it before. The story of Otogi is composed of classic fairy tale themes with some new twists.

Famitsu Xbox: Can you tell us about the game's protagonist Raikou?

Takeuchi-san: As I mentioned, Otogi's story is based on fairy tale themes. The game's protagonist will be named Raikou, taken from the Raikouki, a collection of fairy tales which serve as the basis of the story. Raikou is a legend, but we wanted to create a game filled with characters that are both legendary and familiar. Within the game itself, some of the enemies that Raikou encounters are also drawn from Japanese legends.

Whoever said the screenshots were choppy did not take the time to look at the trailer here (http://www.fromsoftware.co.jp/top/event/report/e3_2002/movies/E3-otogi.mpg).

I have to say this looks like one of the coolest games I have seen yet. I am so pumped for this game now. Its like Devil May Cry on crack. Does it come out in the U.S.? or only Japan.
