You made it to the last and final survey of the much-anticipated and ridiculously intense Xbox™ Live Beta Test.

Because Xbox Live is still in development, it may be bumpy or even unruly. (But don't say we didn't warn you.) We're relying on your participation and feedback to make improvements, iron out any snags, and tell us which features are the best. You're building Xbox Live right along with us.

Follow the link below to get started on the final survey. Once again, you'll be notified by e-mail. This survey determines the final cut and your fate.

I GOT IT TOO! HOOOYYYYAAAA! Man I am so stoked. I was just gonna go hit the hay when I saw a post on XBA about the second survey being sent out. So I checked my email and BAM, with a rush of excitement I filled out the survey and now I am hoping, praying and wishing for my chance to be a beta tester. Of course it will. The beta kit IS the regular kit...you just get to use it 2 months early.

Well I hope they offer more than just Fever to test. I know less about football than I do about ancient egyptian cabinet making--and I know nothing about that.

I've never even played a football game since Tecmo Bowl and 10 Yard Fight on the NES.

Man, those questions were so basic. I can't imagine that everyone will get in though. I have no idea how they determine it, but there were quite a few people on this site alone.

Of course I hope we all get in, (or at least me :D ) but the final selection process seems like entering a lottery. It'll just cost you a dollar, but does your number come up?

I was actually nervous about how I could answer the questions to make sure I made it till I saw what they were.

As far as the gamertags go, I think you're pretty safe. From what I understand, the system is similar to how Yahoo! Messenger nicks are assigned. You have one "main account" (your yahoo ID #( and you can then associate that # with any desired nickname. I go by the nick "VAN" on yahoo...as do a few thousand other people. The thing that separates me from the others is my unique user ID.

At least I *think* that's how it will work. I remember reading somewhere tha you can change your nickname that appears on screen at any time.

You know what? I think we are all pretty much garaunteed to get it if we got the second survey. If we answered the questions right. Think about it. They need 10,000 beta testers from north america. There are about 40 on this site. Therefor we can expect somewhere around 40 on every site. How many xbox forums do you think are out there with 40 different poeple who also got the survey. There would need to be 25 other sites. It is very possible that there is that many sites but I am not sure that 40 poeple got sent surveys from each site.

I was just using websites as an example. Do you really think there are 250 xbox websites out there that have forums with 40 getting sent the surveys. I doubt it, therefor that leaves plenty of room for poeple who are not on any forum.

If you have ever visited the newsgroups that is on XBOX's site (MS calls them forums, which they are a snazzy web-interfaced newsgroup) that is all this is.
It's password protected for a reason, I'm pretty sure when the official beta is up and going, this is the area that the Beta team is going to want the beta testers to go and post information, comments, bugs, how much LIVE kicks a s s, etc.

Just take a look at the URL of the General XBOX newsgroup area: (http://www.xbox.com/community/forums/xbox.asp) I replaced the 'xbox' with 'livebeta' and presto.....

I noticed the NFL2k3 forum at that link. Will that be another game we test? BTW, congrats to all getting picked. Can't wait to kick some serious a$$ online. Signing off...

I speculate that those who pass round #2 will get lumped into a pool. People will be chosen from the pool based on regional testing needs. If this is the case, perhaps living in a small town would be advantageous for the purposes of the beta.

I don't think Xbox model is playing any role, as I've never even registered mine. Also, been doing some thinking.... and came up with some pretty positive numbers for the optimists in us all. ;)

1) Didn't do any research, but I'm gonna just throw out a number... say 10 million people own an Xbox...

10 MILLION XBOX USERS Trying to get beta live

2) say 10% of those are still on narrowband...

9 MILLION XBOX USERS going for beta

3) say 30% of these are outside of the US.

(about) 6.5 MILLION going for beta

4) say 20% didn't even know about or sign up for the initial survey...

(about) 5 Million going for beta....

5) only 10% made it this far

about 500,000 going for beta..

there are supposed to be a total of 10,000 slots for beta.

so your odds are.. just a random guess....
1 in 5 of getting selected to the Beta.

1 in 5 ain't too bad.

***note: these are stupid numbers I just threw out there, the math isn't even correct, I have nothing to back them up with, and just thought it was as good as any other guess. Plus, it's kind of positive and anyone hoping against hope they'll get selected should get a kick out of some random numbers that say they have a good shot. I know it makes ME feel good to look at it this way! ***

Well actually there were 100,000 xbox owners who signed up for the beta test and only 10,000 will get picked apparently, thats what it says in the e-mail. and many were "weeded out" after the first survey, also we are apparently in the top 10% of people who took the first survey according to XBA.

Of course not everyone who filled out the second survey will be chosen. Use your heads. The second survey is used to FURTHER ELIMINATE those people who do not meet the requirements.

Lets assume that they need 10 beta testers. They make the announcement and ask for applications.


Step 1: Application - 25 applications are submitted. That's 15 more than needed. Hmmm. Ok, 5 of these arent of the minimum age. We'll eliminate those.

Step 2: First Survey - From the 20 remaining applicants, you can eliminate 5 more due to the fact that they are in a citythat you don't need betatesters.

Step 3: Second Survey - There are still 5 more testers than you need, so more eliminations must be made. 5 people didn't agree to the confidentiality clause. Get rid of them.

Step 4: Finished - There are now the 10 beta testers that they had hoped for.

People are eliminated at each level. It is highly probable that many of the folks who are chosen as beta testers will be unable to handle the job, so MS will likely be replacing poorly performing testers throughout the beta period.

In short: Don't assume that the second survey guarantees you a spot on the beta team. It doesn't. Even if 100% of the people gave the answers thet MS wanted for survery #2, they will still need to randomly eliminate some folks to get down to their quota of testers.

To all of you wondering if they will be picking based on your ISP I doubt it seing as how they have yet to take any ISP info other that what type of connection we have. (i.e. Cable, *DSL, Satellite, etc.) But while we are on the subject of ISP's how many ppl have ISP's on Level3's Network (like i do hehehe) I'm wondering who will have the best connections to M$.

:) This is what they have told me through the support chat.They said that your ISP has no bearing they are only looking @ the speed of your broadband.
As far as who will have the best connection to MS.I would assume that the closer you are to Redmond WA. the better it will be 4 you due to thats the location of their hub in north america.The other 2 hubs are in Tokyo & Paris.
Also I have received Survey #2 & am in the same boat as all of you.I am wondering if the people who got the stand bye survey if any of them got Survey #2.
I also assume that if we get selected they will send us confirmation it will be late on Tues night (13th).this seems to be their trend so far.;)

Not true. Survey #2 asked us to select the name of our broadband provider via a drop down list of many choices (charter, comcast, roadrunner, telus., bellsouth, etc)

I just spoke on the xbox chat support with a representitive and they said that every one they pick should be up and running on xbl by the 20th of August. Or so the transcript says. If they want us to be up and running by the 20th i would believe that they are going to notify us sooner than two weeks in order for MS to ship the headsets and games to us by the 20th, now the guy might be wrong but i doubt it.

That is exactly what I was told as well -- that Beta Testing starts the 20th of August, 2002. Thus, the first round of selected Beta Testers most likely will be notifed very soon as they need to ship the software/hardware to us.
