hey, i wanna get my xbox all hooked up for live, and i wanna know how i would do it

i have broadband already, and i need to know if i have to buy like a router or a hub or what?

cuz routers are freakin expensive, and all of these hubs and switches are cheap, I dont know what the difference is

also, what kind of cables do i need to connect my stuff up?

you need to have broadband, a router, a hub(if your pc isn't right by the router), an xbox, a controller, an internet capable game, xbox live kit, a subscription to xbox live, and a cazillion other things...

You can use either Router/Hub/Switch.

If you go with the "ROUTER" you will need 1 "ROUTER" with built in 4 port "SWITCH" , you will hook your "BROADBAND" to the "ROUTER" then you take your "PC" with a "STRAIGHT THROUGH RJ45 CAT-5 cable" to the built in switch on the ROUTER then you want to take your "XBOX" and use the same type of cable CAT-5 Straight Through cable into the built in switch on the ROUTER.

If you go the HUB/SWITCH Route i recommend a switch because is supplies 100% equal bandwidth to all ports on the device.
Hub/switch you will need to keep the broadband services connected how it currently is setup then you want to buy a 10/100 NIC card and install it in the same pc where the broadband service is currently setup, then from the New NIC card you installed take a CAT-5 cable from the NIC into the HUB/SWITCH do the same for your XBOX plug it directly into the HUB/SWITCH using a CAT-5 CABLE, make sure your using port 1- however many ports you get and dont plug it into the UPLINK port. Also you will need some type of software that will allow for ICS "INTERNET CONNECTION SHARING" windows 2000,XP and Windows ME and Windows 98 SE all have this feature, you will then need to enable ICS on your Broadband services NIC card to allow for that device to be shared over your network.

Good Luck :)

No, I think you need just a crossover cable and 2 NIC's.

Get a broadband router with a built in 4 port switch. They're only $50...that's not expensive at all.

ok, awesome

well, my comp is downstairs, and my xbox is up in my entertainment palace(my room)

if i go with a hub or switch(which xbconnect says is easiest), can i just plug the cable in anytime i wanna play, or do i have to have a cable runnin through my house all the time??

thanks

You don't. If you all you want is your xbox hooked up for xbox live then all you need is your xbox going straight to your broadband modem from you isp. But, if you want your xbox and your pc to share an internet connection then you'll need a more elaborate solution. Or you could just hook your xbox to the internet while your playing, and then when your done unplug the ethernet cable and then hook it up to your pc while you're on that. But it seems like more trouble than a simple switch would be.

Does anyone know how to set up a wireless network w/ XBOX?
My PC is upstairs, my XBOX is downstairs, and I don't want to run a cable through the walls. I do happen to have a second dsl router from the time I cancelled and re-subscribed, would it be easier to just put that one on the XBOX? I' pretty sure I could only plug in one at a time, but I really dont like running cable.
