i dont think that there is one provider for xbox live. not unless M$ has something else up there sleeve.
As long as you can get broadband access, does it matter which provider you have?

I recommend road runner because they got good service. Our road runner got shut down one day and we had a guy come fix it. No Problem!

In my area, EVERYONE has cable. Only problem is, everyone has Road Runner. With Cable, the more people that are on, the slower your connection is. At one point my friends download rate was cut down in 1/2. So if your area is filled with people using Road Runner, I strongly recommend not getting. However, if you have a Time Warner Cable as your cable provider, I suggest getting Earthlink Cable. One, it is faster than Road Runner. RR has a 128k upload rate (which is ok, but I don't even have broadbrand so that would be like a dream come true having 128k) while Earthlink has 256k upload rate and a faster download rate as well. The good thing about Earthlink is Time Warner has to provide the equipment but Earthlink provides the service (i.e. they are the ones with the server) and if noone has Earthlink than chances are it'll go very damn fast. I believe earthlink is only $32 a month, or $42 and is free for 1 or 3 months. If you wanna do some major research into which one is good for u, go to DSLreports.com Signing off...

For the reasons mentioned by mrmp3 as well as other reasons, if you have a choice between cable and DSL, I'd recommend DSL.
