hi, i need to buy some crossover cable, and i was wondering if i should buy the regular cat5 or some cat5e enhanced one

what is the difference between the 2??
is it worth the extra like 20 bucks for the enhanced one??

Cat 5 is just used for regular bb/internet. If you don't have gigabit network ethernet just go ahead and get Cat5. Cat-5e is just for if you have Gigabit Ethernet. It would be a waste of money if you have regular ethernet and buy Cat-5e. Just go with the regular one.:)

Cat5e is not for gigabit. Cat6 is gigabit

Cat5 = 100MB per sec
Cat5e= 350MB per Sec
cat 6= gigabit status.

I personally use cat5e so that even with line interferance, and noise my connection will stay as close to 100mb persec as possible.

NOTE: Using cat5e+ cables will not let u experience speed over 100MB per sec. The Hardware has to support speeds over 100MB per sec.

Cat 5e does gigabit just fine...I'm doing it right now. There's no difference in 5e and 6. At least that's what I learned in my Cisco CCSE class.

It depends what you want to do. If you just want to hook up two Xbox's together, then yes. A standard crossover cable will work.

But if you're wanting to go Live, you'll need a broadband router.

If this is true, it's un-freaking-believable! We only had one computer at our high school when I graduated...a big Apple //e! Now they are doing Cisco classes in high school?? Unreal. We've come a long way!

I agree. I remember back when I was in the 6th, our school of 10000+ had only 1 computer lab with about 20 computers, enough for only one class at a time. But back to the topic of the thread, your best bet is to go with Cat5e, and get a router. you won't see the cat5e rated speed of 350MB, but you'll come closer to 100MB on the lan side with cat5e then you will with just Cat5. Cat5e will tolorate interference better then cat5.

peejay i never said Cat5e wouldn't work with gigabit. I just said Cat6 is marketed for gigabit.

For the purposes of XBOX Live (or any Internet connection you're likely to have in the next five years) regular CAT5 is just fine. CAT5E won't make a bit of difference.

(BTW--regular CAT5 could handle at least two T3 lines with no loss risk)

I just looked at the link you posted regarding the cisco training. It says it is a one year course. You started in 11th grade? Did you fail and have to retake the course? Also, it in no way states that it will prepare you for certification.

Try reading it again..... It says A one year 3.0 Credit course includes instruction in A+ and the "FIRST TWO SEMESTERS OF FOUR SEMESTERS OF CISCO NETWORKING".

1. You have no idea about how high school semesters work.

yeah, just plug it directly to your cable/dsl modem and config thru the xbox.
