I have been having problems with my Xbox lately and took it to work and asked the lead technician to look at it. It seemed that the dvd rom drive would slow down and access the disk during gameplay. It used to do this during the loading process. I unplugged it for 15 min and it was back to normal. The reason he said that happens is that the hard drive sometimes does not clear the cache and it fills up. Unplugging it clears the cache out. It doesn't mean It's broken, it just means it's one of them freak things that happen. It could also be the M-processor chip gets in a confused state and unplugging it resets it. If you ever have problems with loading games, or slowdown due to the drive stopping and starting, unplug it for about 15 min or when you see the clock display again. It happened to me 3 times and doing this fixed it .Simply turning it off won't cut it. The chip still has power to it even with the Xbox being off. You need to unplug it.

Hey that actually happened on my Xbox when I was using CAW in WWF Raw for the Xbox. The move animations started slowing down pretty bad compared to how they moved previously. It happened in Rallisport as well on one level which previously was running at the normal framerate in all of my earlier attempts on it. Haven't noticed it ever since though so like you said it probably doesn't mean your Xbox is busted.
