Short answer: no

I don't have the link but the developers have confirmed that LOTR for Xbox is in 480p and DOES support Widescreen.

When a title supports widescreen does that just mean a letterbox 4:3 image?

The developers during an interview stated that they are supporting true widescreen, so we will get more image for LOTR. They tried to do 1080i but because of memory issues they couldn't. But they are using every trick in the Xbox book so it should be a cool. Lots of bump mapping, full screen AA etc. Here is the conversation:

At least I hope this all means that it isn't just a letterboxed 4:3 image.
