My startup disk has problems with load times, videos skipping, and the demo video bails about 15 seconds into it. I've read about the boiling water fix in the beta forums and was wondering:
A.) Is anyone here at XBA having these same startup disk problems?
B.) Have you tried the boiling water fix, if so how did it go?

Boiling water fix? Please explain.
But yeah, I have had problems when I first got it...really choppy with the vid and sound. I let them know about this in that survey we got yesterday. Oh well, no biggie, I don't play that one anywho.

It's all over the General Discussion beta forum. The disks are coming with a waxy protective coating. You basically boil some water, place your disk in there for 20-30 seconds, pull it out, let it air dry (so you don't scratch it) and wallah, you have a startup disk that loads faster and without the choppy vid and sound. There are about 2 dozens guys that are swearing by it. I'm thinking about ordering a second disk from tech support, and then giving it a try and was just wondering if anyone here had tried it yet?

Hmmmm, compact disks are temperature sensitive.....Boiling water? Hmmmmm, very interesting.
Wax coating? I dunno what thats from, but I worked in the CD manufacturing biz for 6 years and never heard of this. Vey very interesting. The CD's start as a clear plastic disk, then get a silver lacquer spread on them. Then using a glass mold the information is pressed onto the cd and it then is dried and comes out of the molding machine. Then it goes to the silk screen printing machine for the face decorations. Then packaged and out the door. Dunno where the wax is coming from.....Once again very interesting....LOL
Oh well, there's your quick lesson on how a cd is made. But I dont think boiling water can be a good thing for it. If its working then bravo, but I still would have a backup disk...LOL!

You find it difficult to believe that a company somewhere manufactures DVD's different from where you work/ed?

Hmm yea I'm having problems with the XBL Beta disk. I can't wait to start playing, just have to wait for my dad to come home and put his CC number in.

I got mine in today, just in time for the network to come back up.
When it did, I put it in, and the video and sound just in the MENU were choppy, I could hear the disk start to spin, the stop, and start again repetively.
I decided What The Hell, and went for the boiling thing, and I can not believe it actually fixed it.
It is one of the oddest things I've ever seen.
I work tech support, and everytime we have an issue with something like HP or Compaq recovery CD's that won't finish, we try cleaning them, then have to get replacements.
I think next time I come across that, if the eu's willing, I'm giong to have em boil their CD's for a bit...
But, yea, I didn't believe the Boiling, then mine wouldn't work, and I tried it, and it works.
I've seen stranger things work before...

My Revolt wouldn't work because it kept freezing on a certain screen. I boiled the disk and let it dry and it worked the next time I put it into the box.

I was one of the lucky ones to receive two disks. A note came with it explaining others have had problems and they included a seconded disk because of it. Well, my sealed copy of Re-Volt/Setup didn't work right. I had the exact symptoms "the video and sound just in the MENU were choppy, I could hear the disk start to spin, the stop, and start again repeatedly." The second disk that was in a paper sleeve, just like Fever, worked fine.
I thought I had nothing to lose by trying the boiling thing, so I did it. To my amazement, I worked! You herd it from an addict - IT WORKS!

LOL It worked like a charm. I can attest, just like the plethora of people above me that it really worked. I couldn't watch the demo video and I couldn't play revolt, so I ordered another disk from tech support and tried the boiling water fix and it works great now. It takes about 1/4 of the time to load, no drops or stuttering anymore--unbelievable. Mock if you must, but he who laughs last laughs best.

I don't think this will work for just any disk problem, if you touched the disk before you put it the water it clearly had some sort of sticky residue on it, and the water obviously removed it without scratching, but I guess it's worth a try in other cases as long as you have a backup somewhere near by.

I know, but the kind of cases it would be in would be already to the point of them having to order new CD's, pay the usual 15 bucks, and wait about a week...
Most people will try ANYTHING when their computer isn't working, in the shear hope that it'll be back up sooner rather than later...
I understand what your saying, though...
