If you can afford to buy an Xbox with multiple games but can't afford $50 for a whole year of Xbox live, there's problems to be worked on.

who cant afford xbox live? its only 120 bucks a year. if you saved 1 dollar everyday, you would have enough for like 2 years of xbox live. its not that hard.
$120 a year?? It's $50 a year where I live!

Maybe he cannot afford to get a broadband connection...
My solution to lack of BB connection: USE YOUR FRIENDS!
Now I think everyone out there has a friend with broadband, so get XBL, suck up a little to them, then go to their house and, boom, you're connected. I might have to use this trick until my cheap ass parents get DSL...
Do that, or run smoe CAT-5 from the neighbors house. Bury it and they'll never know it :p

ha, or get a wireless thing.
See, so unless you live on a desert island there is no excuse not to get XBL.

Wait, guys. For those who don't have broadband, Xbox Live will cost nearly $300 a year. That's $20 extra per month for broadband ($240/year), plus the $50 Live fee. For most people (because most have 56K), that's the total cost they're looking at: $290 per year. Things are tight for some people (e.g., me), and that kind of expenditure for online gaming is too much.

Nono ... don't get any wireless routers. Unless your expecting to pay 500+ for one ... anything less won't be able to go more than 10 feet away. I tried a 200 dollar one ... can't even have it in another room. Took the pos back. :(

But it's not like Xbox Live is the ONLY thing you can do with broadband. Everyone is going to need broadband sooner or later, Xbox or not, so you can't really include it in the cost of Xbox Live.

300 bucks a year? dude, xbox live is 10 bucks a month, so thats 120 bucks a year. thats like how much i get in 1 paycheck. and broadband is probly gonna cost someone like 40-50 bucks. so thats only 170 bucks a year, at the most. how the hell did u get 300 bucks?

Lol ...
Broadband:
$20 (Cheap broadband ...) x 12 months = $240
XBL:
$10 x 12 months = $120
$240 + $120 = $360 ....
Now you see there snoop?

Yes, you can include it in the cost of Xbox Live, because that's how a lot of 56K'rs are looking at the cost (myself included). Going to Xbox Live means I have to upgrade to broadband. I haven't upgraded yet, because although (as you say) there are other benefits to broadband, they aren't substantial enough to justify the expense. Xbox Live would be the only reason I would get broadband, and that goes, I imagine, for a lot of Xbox gamers with 56K modems. So, when they're thinking of getting Xbox Live, they're thinking not only about the $50 yearly fee, but about the cost of upgrading to broadband. They have to. That's part of the equation, part of the decision. People can't ignore that and then say, "But it's so cheap, there's no reason not to!" That's ignoring the broadband upgrade cost (minimum $20/month, or $240/year).

You didn't multiply the broadband cost by 12 (months), and you're figuring it too high anyway. For people with 56K, broadband will cost an extra $20 a month: instead of $20/month for 56K, they'll be paying $40 a month for broadband -- and that's a bare minimum. $20 x 12 months is $240. Plus the $50 XBL fee, and that's $290. See?

well, too bad. I'm sorry but $300 is nothing really. Go out and work if you need too, you're getting nothing done in here. Microsoft isn't going to say, "Look! A lazy kid! We better lower the price!"

You're forgetting some of the people saying they can't afford it have other expenses to play for like if they are a home owner or whatever so they more than likely have a job but not the extra cash per month.

Look, $300 is not "nothing" for the luxury of online gaming. It would be nothing for food and groceries, for rent, or for any other essential, but for people on tight budgets (like me), you have to weigh the costs -- especially because it's a luxury item, not an essential. And just for the record, I make 50K a year. My money is tight because of a big mortgage, kids, and a wife who isn't working right now.

I dug my way out of a lot of student loan debt, and I vowed not to go back into debt...ever. But I don't mean to focus on my personal financial situation or decisions. I'm just responding to the ideas that a) Xbox Live is cheap (only $50) and so there's "no excuse for not getting it" and b) anyone who declines to spend $300/year for XBL is a "lazy kid."
Look, I think Microsoft is offering a great deal: XBL for $50/year -- Are you kidding, that's phenomenal.
I just don't want the broadband upgrade costs to be ignored, because that's why many people won't get XBL (including me, at least not the first year).

If you can't afford to play Live, then keep you PC and play online for free. There is always an alternative option.

think about when live comes out your not spending just $50 your looking more at a $100 just so you can play on live.
Here is my suggestion if you have bb but can't afford to go live when it comes out. Go down to EB or some other store and trade in those xbox games you don't play any more. I've traded 4 game i never play and got three new ones (that i play all the time now)for $50. Hey its better then those games collecting dust.

If you didnt know, you CAN go xbox live on 56k.
Unless you dont know anything about computers, you can set up your Xbox for 56k for less than $20.
you'll need:
network card $5-10
ethernet cable $5-10
and "MS Internet Connection Sharing" free (with windows98SE or higher)
If you don't know what I am talking about, go ask your computer friend. :p

It's never been $10 a month. It's always been $50/year. At least for the first year. Maybe after that it'll be $10/month, but for now it's $50 a year. It's always been that way. The $10/month was only speculation. MS announced the price as being $50 a year many months ago -- at E3, if I remember right.

No -- instead, it's weird how you and others can't accept the everyday obvious commonsense idea that for some people, an extra $300 a year for Live isn't worth it, isn't a wise move in their circumstances. If this were a matter of buying a second or third console, the name-calling and sarcasm would not be there, so why do we hear people being called "lazy" or "cheap ass" here, where Live is concerned? Not sure, but I imagine it's either because they think gaming is so important it should take priority over other budget items (e.g., birthday gifts, medical expenses), which suggests a lack of maturity, or they don't even know what a budget is. Or else egos are getting offended, because someone is suggesting that what they consider essential isn't. Ah well.
