Great forums guys, keep up the great site!

Yay! First post in 3D Shooters ;-) 1337

Anyway, I can’t say how hyped I am about the potential Xbox has for the FPS genre. It’s one of the first consoles to have the power to run the now staple 3D FPS games that until now, only PCs have had the power and luxury to enjoy. Games like Metal of Honor: Allied Assault, Battlefield 1942, Return to Castle Wolfeintien, Duke Nuke’em Forever, HALO… they represent the first real push into the demanding genre of 3D shooters.

However, the above mostly represents only a small portion of innovation. Remember, PCs have been doing this for years. But where the X-Box is capable to shine, it’s quite possible that the PC brethren will not be able to compete. In Console land, everyone is playing with the same system specs, so tailoring games to be playable on wide system ranges is not longer an artistic or creative bottleneck, like it can be on the PC platform. Where I see the X-Box taking the most advantage of this is in general and in 3D Shooters will be with the it’s toted Online play, specifically Broadband.

Games designed for Broadband bitrates, running on an all equal system specs as powerful as X-box could be more than an evolution. If there is a developer willing enough, and publisher cunning enough, the potential impact is revolutionary.

When console systems release evolutionary games the gaming industry may be surprised, and momentarily exhilarated. But if a console system publishes revolutionary games, there will be more than just haste recognition.

This system can create that, as long as it realizes that it’s weakness is that it cannot keep up to the maddening existential hardware advancements on the PC platform. But where X-box has not the capability to manifest the hardware to stay competitive with this “platform”, it has its distinct advantage: All players on this platform will be playing with equal specifications. And because of this, the level of detail, and immense coherency a game developed around the fact that it only has to push the limits of one set of specs – X-Box CAN compete. It /can/ compete, and it can do more.

X-Box can revolutionize.

... 3D shooters = First Person Shooters (and some Third Person Shooters)
