Before I start, let me say that I'm putting these into extremely lay terms, so there might be some things that aren't "technically" correct. I know, I know....
The difference between cable and DSL
With cable modems, yes, you have a pretty large bit of bandwidth. The problem lies in that you're sharing that huge pipe with others in your general area. So during the hours of 5-10 pm (prime time for internet usage) you will see a decrease in your internet performance. This is also true if you're tied in with users that use considerable amounts of the bandwith.
With DSL, there isn't the sharing going on. Your DSL line is tied directly into the hub.
That's a VERY basic explanation of it, but that's my reasoning on why cable modem users could have problems. In essence, your connection isn't as stable.
If I'm wrong and you can back up why, please shoot me down. I'm open to learning the truth.

The issue for cable users is that they are sharing the pipe with the people in their area. DSL doesn't have the fluctuation but tends to have a lower cap on throuput and it is dependent on how close you are to your ISPs backbone.

It also has some programs, hints to speed up your connection (remember to backup your registry if you are messing with it :) )

I've had cable for 4 years now in 5 different parts of the country. All high traffic areas and have never experienced a bogged down pipe even when having more than one person attatched to my cable modem itself.
I'm probably just a lucky one though since some people do have overcrowded hubs. Now that most cable companies are putting caps on the available bandwidth it has slowed down some, but almost always faster than any of my friends DSL lines.
No real problems on Live yet with the exception of skipping in ReVolt. Whacked has worked perfectly as well as MotoGP.
