After buying the game Thursday along with the new OXM I found that:

-The DVD include of Shenmue 1, is horrible.

-The first 45 minutes of game is filled with you walking 5 steps and watching another cutscene.

-An awesome way to make money is to arm wrestle.

-Once again working in the game is fun, although sometimes tedious.

-You can talk to everyone, but sometimes it gets repetitive.

-Hong Kong is a very confusing place.

-Controls are clunky.

-Unnessecary load times...

The DVD that I was looking forward to, is really horrible. They should've just package the original Shenmue in port form because all the DVD is is the cutscenes from the original and a few fights that some other guy fought.

The first part of this game gets really annoying having to work your way through what seemed like 20+ cutscenes of pure crap that was very unnessecary.

Your first bit of action occurs in an arm wrestling match, if you choose to participate. If not, too bad for you. Its a fun way to start the game.

I got my first job as hauling crates and I can say it is fun, but no where near as fun as hauling crates with the forklift in the original Shenmue.

Everyone in the game is eligible for you to talk to, if you wish. Asking them where to find something or about someone can get repititve as Ryo likes to say the same things. But its kind of cool the first person mode they give you when you are being escorted.

Hong Kong is a very confusing place and I would much rather be back in the hometown of Ryo, and a map would have been nice. I can't find some of the places I need too, but I'm sure if I was a little more attentive I could.

The controls are clunky and will take me some time to get used too, but no one could ever possibly like these when they pick this game up and play.

Load times are frequent and seem very unnessecary after playing the likes of Morrowind which held such a huge world with no problem.

- It seems like Sega failed to make an attempt to change this game or edit the code from the Dreamcast version in the year they had to do so. I was rather dissappointed in this title as I have been looking forward to it since it was announced last year, and it let me down. I know a lot of this sounds bad, but do give it a chance and play it for a little while. The longer you play it the better it gets, honest...

I will update more later...

I'm sorry but your making a judgment too soon. This game and series is the best in videogame history. It's a real life rpg. Life gets tedious sometimes. Later in the game the action picks up so much you will wish there were more cutscenes. I hate these half assed impressions. Why fix something that ain't broken? Fix the code for what? Stop being so critical and enjoy one of the best games ever made.PERIOD!!!

I have to agree on some of your points.. It maybe is a bit to soon to make a judgement call like you did. Seriously, how many hours have you put into it? It s only been available for 3-4 days. Give it some time and see what happens. I thought the same of Morrowind when I first played it.

You do know that you CAN buy a map for each area for 10 dollars, right? Even if Shenmue isn't your type of game, buy it anyways to help continue the series... ;)

There would be more too come...

So why would I lump it all into one sum. I was a huge fan of Shenmue and now I think Shenmue 2 is a huge dissapointment right now. They had a year to do something 'special' with this and tottally failed. The excessive load times between parts of the city are uneccessary and it could have been done with out on Xbox(Halo, Morrowind). There was no reason for all of those, and that long 250 minute(exaggerating) entrance video tottally turned me off from playing. They did not need all of those cut scenes, they could have done it through Real-Time scenes where you can cut the guy off and walk off... I mean really, you can't actually tell me all that crap at the beginning was needed. And from that first part I had played a total of 2 hours. So I will update more either tonite or tommorrow morning.

Here's a fact. When I first started playing Morrowind I hated it. I was so overwhelmed and I just didn't want to put alot of time into this game. I have never played a game like that. Now I love it. I loved Shenmue 1 and 2 from the get go.I think they improved alot from the first one. Trust me, give it some time and You'll see that it's a remarkable game. It's really my favorite videogame of all time. Along with part one. It sucked me into a different world when I had bad days in our REAL world.

You know damned well that this game could have been improved greatly. It might be an awesome game but it can't be held with praise until the bad parts are noticed. This is a Dreamcast portalicious. There was no need to put this on Xbox when most of us all owned a Dreamcast, they could've just put it on there. If I would have known it would be the same I would have bought the import version from EB and beat this long ago when it would've looked awesome, not it looks like an average no glamour port from Dreamcast...

What it is...

With that being said the only real knock on gameplay I have is the horrible controls...

I have to say... the idea is interesting. Like an RPG with a fighting twist. It seems like a game you will have to invest time with like an RPG.

However, my main gripe is the graphics! This is not even better than the games I played on my original 3dfx card! Kinda like ps1 graphics.

Cmon, developers, I could get better graphics than this in the bargain bin for $5.99 for my pc!

They obviously direct ported this game. I am sure glad I did not pay $50 for this game as I did not buy my xbox to see crappy stuff like this. If I wanted that, I would just get a ps1 on ebay for $25 and buy $5 games!

Very much spoils the game for me....

But umm... you must be retarded. No bargain bin run of the mill comp game will dish graphics like this. This is only about 20x the graphics of a PS1 and is sub-par qualtiy which can still hold its ground on Xbox. It's nothing special too look at but, you would never be looking at it on the PS1. And if you are going to judge a game by its graphics I feel sorry for you, because that means you must not be able to enjoy classic games for what they are worth. Maybe you should give a game a chance and get some glasses, because everyone knows this by far surpasses anything the PS1 could have ever done. And if you made this comment too someone in the know-how of how things work with games, they would laugh in your face.

Have you even looked at this game? I mean, c'mon , when the guy raises his arms in the armwrestling match it looks like they put him together with legos!!!

I don't just judge a game by graphics alone... but this just sucks!
Look at a game like DOA3 or Hunter .. then look at this game.
It reminds me of the 5.99 version of Virtua Cop I got at Pic'nSave for my computer a couple years ago!

I guess after playing games like UT2003,NOLF2, DOA3, HALO, etc. I have been tainted. But, I expect a little more since this is not the 80s!

This game looks like I 'm wearing glasses all right... because I normally don't need them and it would look all blurry like this!

This is actually worse than NFS hot pursuit 2. It's an insult to the xbox.

You're probably just mad because you make $10 an hour and blew 1/2 your paycheck on this piece!

I'm only trying to tell people that the graphics suck imho.
Go troll someone else .

Everyone else... rent before you buy!

I agree on your points strongly......plus don't forget that the game is orginally created for SEGA...I have just gotten the game yesterday and its really fun...you need to put alot of time into it like Bruce Lee said about delivering a strong punch:" Put your hip into it." :)

I haven't played it for Xbox yet. The Dreamcast version looked great and they were supposed to revamp the graphics engine. I don't know why they didn't. But the Dreamcast version was fine to me. It's all about the game grabbing you and not letting go. At least for me it is

I have put another hour or so into it and:

I can say it is pleasing me a lot more than my first impression. This seems to be turning out to be a good game. Reviewers gave it a bad review because they couldn't have fun 'working'? Too bad for them, they must have missed the:

Lucky Hit Stand:

Remember the games at the arcades like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with the little pins and you had to drop the ball so it would manuever itself throughout the pins and land in a certain area? Well that's what the lucky hit stand is. And you get to run the place for the owner if you ask, and it is so much fun. Its the coolest mini game I have seen yet, and when you are in a need for money its your best bet. No skill involved you just drop the ball while a computer opponent 'off the street' comes to gamble his money away. He drops the ball, and then you drop the ball, first one to get 2 hits wins. Take a gander at this.

I had to go through the intro's again last nite as my game didn't save the first time because I couldn't find the hotel. But I found it last nite and know where its located now. I also used a pawnshop and found that the prices were quite low. I have yet to find an arcade with classic video games, but don't worry, I am searching. As soon as I find one I will report.

Arm Wrestling:

Do you like arm wresting? I wore my arm out last nite 'arm wrestling' while mashing on the A button. I made almost 50 bucks off of it, or more actually, and then I finally got beat. It tires your arm out so much, I would reccomend not taking him on more than twice in a night. There are other arm wrestlers in the game that I have found, but I only go against the Mexican guy at the beginning.

Please, do rent this game, because I am sure with at least 2-3 hours worth of time put into this you will be addicted to the mini-games. Ryo seems to want to continue on his main mission, but damn it, working and living is just too much fun. I can't wait to get home from school right now so I can play again... but I can definately reccomend this right now.

I will update on the Fighting System next... probably tommorrow morning...

Review Score as of now: 8.4

OK, Yes the graphics are dissapointing...........for XBOX.

IN my opinion this game will get alot of complaints about all sorts of things because it does start slow, giving you time to complain.

On the other hand, once you sit down and give it quality time (On a weekend when you have hours to invest) you will notice that the game sucks you in and before you notice, 6-7 hours have gone by and the graphics become a non issue.

This is an RPG
The controls ARE "eh" at best
The fighting system is awsome. (Check your combos in your in game book)
The mini games are perfect to help move the game along.
The improvements from the original are more about game play than visually.

Bottom line, this isn't for everyone. Highly recomend giving it a look though.

You know that if you buy a map you can mark locations using the B button right? Theres no reason to get lost after that. For some reason I didn't figure that out until after 5 hours or so. But it helped alot once I did figure it out... I kept on having to ask people b4 how to get to places.. but with maps its no prob.

Anywho, there is a Pine Arcade on the main street of the Golden Qtr with some pretty cool games in it.

That depends. If you spend alot of time in the casino playing slots, or playing darts in the bar, games in the arcade, using the soda machines, using the toy machines and shopping in the grocery store or buying pull tabs, you may need more!!!

I like the way how the game is designed especially when using bottons like " A, B and X" to break the punks @$$ down...and the funny thing don't play the cup game alone......tell your friends to watch your back.....and I have another suggestion about the development of the game...."Why they didn't program it in a way that u could see Ryo getting a facial hair while the days are passing?"...I guess this would be cool.......and how about getting new clothes for GOD sake.....I don't wanna go through the whole missions with the same jacket...There is Fubu, Karl Kanai and Rocca Wear.........aiight........a blast from the past to Morrowind crew....Keep it real....peace:cool:

Have no fear. The game is long and once you finish, there's so much to do in the shenmue. I beat the game in 6 days almost nonstop nightly. Each session clocked in at 6 hours. The ending (well sort of) is a very satisfying experience for the next chapter. It's looooong.About 45 minutes.I played through the Dreamcast version and I don't know why They didn't just stick with Japanese and use english subtitles and work on the graphics. It makes the game so much more real hearing it in japanese and just reading the subtitles. I can't say enough about this series. The only game that sucked me into a world as much is the original myst. Very different games I know.Anyways you all have fun and If you need any help I'm here for ya. The end of the game is SUPER INTENSE!!! That's all I'll say. Let me know your final thoughts after playing through.:)

Thats true what u said... The story really got intensed on my arrival in Kawloon. and you were right about getting jobs there.. Life style in Kawloon is different than Hong Kong...though Hong Kong is a big city and full of action by Gang Banggers, Kawloon is the land of the Original Gun Clappers....every body is ugly down there and ready to breakout with a helarious rukus.....The game seems too long on your discription and I felt that because everytime I think its the moment to meet Zhu something comes along and makes it harder....I hope from the developers to start from now on designing games like Shenmmu and Morrowind or better.....Thanx for your reply Dre and keep updating......peace and one blood. one !!!!.....
