Hey
I was wondering if I could do this...?
Buy a wireless router with a wireless compatible NIC card. I connect my modem (cable) to the router, I connect my XBOX to the router and I install the NIC card on my computer downstairs.
Is this possible to do? If so any reccomendations on equipment, and does the NIC have to be in a certain way or do I just plug it in a PCI slot in my computer?
Thanks for any help

I'm pretty sure that would work. It's a little similar to what I'm doing. I use my computer to connect then I use a NIC card plugged into my computer and a crossover cable plugged from the NIC in my comp to my Xbox, and it works great.

You can get a D-link 4 port/2.4 ghz wireless from Best Buy for about $125 or so...try that and yes, it will work :)

Hmm.. I'm not an expert in this field, but I'm not sure how well wireless will work with the Xbox. It'll definately connect.. but I would think you'd have problems while gaming. The reason is... in a wireless connection you have more packet loss than in a wired one. Packet loss (in some ways) is a large cause of "LAG" and that would be where you find your problems. I haven't tried it yet.. but if you are on a tight budget I'd go wired unless you have no choice. If you have the cash.. go ahead and try wireless.
Anyone have any experience with XBL beta using wireless?

There are wireless routers that have 4 ports on that back that work just fine. And if you want a good wireless NIC card, get the 802.11b, that's the one u want.

That's basically what I'm trying to get at Casper,
It certainly can be done. No doubt. There's lots of good wireless stuff out there. Any of us IT types are going to be 100% positive it can be done. My point is.. how well is it going to work? Will the lag make it too annoying? My notebook is set up for wireless, but I've lose FTP transfers on it about 1/4 of the time. I'd be real interested in talking to someone who's actually used it to play... Halo on gamespy or xbconnect, or something like MOTO GP. If it does work well, I may just invest in a wireless hub for my house.

I still think your missing my point bud. The wireless router isn't ALL wireless cuz it has 4 ports in the back....so you can plug in directly with Cat 5/6....so it will work. My friend has it on XBL and has not had any lagging issues, other than those that were from normal cable internet use. Ya know?

Nah, I gotcha. Yer still callin' a spade a heart though. It may be wired from the router to the Xbox.. but somewhere out there there's data floatin' through the air or else it wouldn't be wireless. :D However, after doing some research and talkin' to some people smarter than me, I've found that within 100 feet there's virtually no packet loss whatsoever... so there's no reason to assume it wouldn't work the exact same as a network wired completely. Which sounds pretty good. (I just wouldn't suggest using Mac's airport crap ;) ) Anyway.. wired or not I'll still kick some nationwide booty.
