I know this has been discussed several times around here but it's a real pain trying to find a thread that contains the pertinent info i am looking for...(hoping one of ya cats can shed some light).
DO i want a hub or a router?
My pc is backed up to a wall in a room,On the other side of the wall is my hometheatre, xbox setup.I have no problems punching a hole thru the wall and stringing wires.BUT if my little woman wants to use the puter while i am gaming(from what i have read i need a router?right?)...........It would be so much cheaper to go for a hub though.
I am looking at dumping $90 router-$70 xbl plus the gouging taxes all in canuck funds.I am looking at buckeighty out of my pocket before the day is done ....right?

Yes, you'll need a router.
I'm not sure about canadian prices, but I was able to pick up a router here in the US for $35 after a rebate.

Ok this is what I've found, and I still might be wrong. So don't take my work as 100%.
A router is needed if your ISP only offers you 1 IP address per connection.
In my case, however, my ISP gives me 2 IP addresses. Therefore I should be able to hook my Xbox up to my hub and still have my computer running fine.
The Xbox needs an IP address like any computer. A router will share the IP address with your computer while a hub will just split the connection.
So there's your answer. Hope that helped.

yes, I learned this the hard way. I can only connect to XBL if I plug directly into the modem...:(

okay ,okay okay,,here goes again,
J DUB.Who is your ISP?I'm from bc too so that's why i'm asking.
thnx for the info peoples.
Plewis i take it you just unplug your cat5 cable from the modem then straight into the xbox?
I guess i could cheap out and do this till next pay day 2 before i buy the router or hub i need.

I have ADSL and my ISP Axion Internet. I think Telus will offer the same thing, but I'm just speculating.
My friend also has two computers running with a hub on Shaw internet, so I would assume that they give 2 IP addresses as well.

Im not gonna use either, Im gonna run mine directly through my comp. Since my cable modem is connected to my comp. via USB, im getting a network card and connect my xbox through my comp. Kinda like a mini server. So i dont have to spend like 30 - 50 dollars on a router.

CharlieHustle, i was about to ask about that same thing, but since you brought it up...
here's the deal. i'm running a network in my house, with 2 PCs, i've got a cable modem that i share using a router. everything is fine and dandy, except that i had to run cat5 cable from upstairs where the modem and router are, down into the basement where my computer and now xbox are. i didn't want to run anothe line down through the house, so i wanted to know if i could add another network card to my pc and some how connect the xbox through that.
so i just put the nic card in, and plug in the xbox, or is there any other prep that needs to be done?
i haven't yet bought xbox live, but i wanted to get some answers before i went and picked it up.
any help would be appriciated :)

Thats exactly what i did today.
Install another network card. Then get a crossover cable to connect the xbox to your comp. Your comp will have an option asking whether you want to share the internet connection from that computer(I have XP and its under control panel and then network and internet connection, then home network). It works fine So all i have to do to play the xbox live is just turn the computer on. Remember, get a crossover cable to hook your xbox up to your comp. not a patch cable. COMPUSA was tired of seein me this weekend. BUT I SAVED 50 DOLLARS ON A DAMN ROUTER.

Sandeep, you could actually add a switch downstairs and just switch between computer and Xbox when needed. It might be cheaper.
Just a thought.

i'd rather have both online at once. that crossover cable sounds good to me. i was hoping it was that simple ;)
im not new to networking, but i've never worked with networking video game consoles before, so i wanted to make sure.
its gonna take me a couple weeks to get the money to pick up some Live games and the live kit, but i should be there sooner then later.
thanks a bunch for the info, it's much appriciated. (even though as i looked through the rest of the board, i saw that my question had pretty much been answered a few times over, sorry for asking without looking through the other forums first)

I didnt know anything about networking either. So, everything i learned was over this weekend. Like i said before that COMPUSA was tired of seein me, cause i kept buying a patch cable when i needed a crossover and vice versa. You know how us men are... We dont wanna be taught, well just learn through trial and error. But, i knew that there was a way to make my computer a router or shall i say a server, so just like you, i decidid to find out how. Good luck and hope to see you online.

Will ANY router work w/ Xbox?

Check xbox.com site for a compatability list of routers that work.
I ended up with a Hub that works just sweet.

You're lucky wulff. Despite my reasoning, the hub just wouldn't work. So I had to buy a $110 router. Fortunately it came with a $50 mail-in rebate, so it isn't THAT bad.
