Yea, but they get picked on the most unfortunately in deathmatch games. I almost always play with a Mad Dog.

You can beat the game on any difficulty, including Easy, to unlock Ragnorak and Ymir for Live or system link play. And no, unless almost everyone is a big mech, these guys get ripped to shreds in the games I play. Everyone gangs up on them, but if everyone on your team is a big mech, than you won't get ganged up on because the other team won't know which one to pick, so you'll end up doing welll in that game, but otherwise, they're only good to say you have them.

I've taken out Ymirs and Ragnaroks (one at a time, at most 2 in quick succession) with my Mad Dog. Could probably do the same with a Mad Cat or an Atlas, I'm good with those mechs...the Ymir and Ragnarok aren't necessarily the best, in my opinion the Mad Dog is the best because if it's quick rate of fire and maneuverability....it's all opinions...

I like the Uziel and the Catapult. But I haven't bothered to unlock any mechs yet. Maybe I'll have to do that.

Do you have to do it on a certain difficulty? Or can you get both of them on the easiest mode?

Baleful

Don't you read? You can unlock both the Ragnarok and the Ymir on any difficulty. From what I understand, beat the game, then go back and play the level where you fight the Ragnarok and kill it with a Ragnarok...

I just got this games yesterday.

The MECHS you mention have good offensive attacks, but how do you defend with your MECH?

Since I am a newbie, I don't understand how to defend attacks. Can someone please explain to me?

How do you defend yourself in a mech? Move out of the way of your enemy's attacks. Some mechs have different defence specials that you get by pressing the right thumbstick button, and other have none...

Timber Wolf is the Clan designation for the Mad Cat... It's originally a Clan 'Mech design. (as is the Cougar, Mad Dog (vulture), etc.)

..I haven't gotten the game yet, but I seriously hope that Microsoft hasn't ****ed with my favorite fiction verse so much that the TW and MC are now COMPLETELY DIFFERENT 'MECHS..

BTW, the Clans rule all with the Timber Wolf (Mad Cat). w00t.

Can't be stopped in a Ragnarock. But before I unlocked the Ragnarock, the Summoner. It is well balanced between power and shields, plus it can fly!

That's the only problem I have with the Ragnorock, if it could fly I don't care how many of you there was, you simply couldn't stop me.:D :)

Professor Kaos

I would have to say vulture is the best. He has a sidestep that would fake out Jordan. He also has more powerful missiles then mad dog. Overall vulture has to be up there as one of the best mechs (even though he walks like a duck)

Professor Kaos
12-17-2002, 03:59 PM
But I can fire missiles faster then the vulture, so i can shoot maybe 9,3 per shot and you'll only shoot 3. So, in the end I'll still beat you. Oh and that side step, I'll be on dat like flys and *****.

everyone knows that my SKILLZ with the catapult are un-matched.

I mean, I am able to take down ragnaroks single handedly with my catapult.

Everyone has a Mech that just feels right when you control it.

I am now trying to master the catapult's borther, the bowman.

watch out speedball, I am comming for ya!!! :)

Bowman is "THE" mech to take out crowds. The splash damage of the missiles are crazy....Gotta be careful you don’t kill your own team though.
It’s also a mid size mech that is over looked on the battle field...Everyone always goes for the large mechs.

2 hits from the bowman’s level3 missile brings down a Mad Cat, 3 hits will drop a Ragnarok.

I see a lot of people trying the Bowman, but it takes time to learn how to use the dumb fire missiles.

I'm right now using the Ymir, damn i LOVE that mech, especially for its PPC abilities. Unlike the Ragnarok. No one can beat me with the Ymir, well u can beat me if it's like a 3v1. :D Ymir and Uziel are the mechs to choose. No questions asked! ;)

Ever since I started to use the Thor I have been doing a whole lot better, Ragnaroks arent that good unless you know how to use the weapons really good. Most of the time they get their kills stolen by the mechs with a faster firing gun.

thatroger is great with the Thor, so I tried it out and when my machine guns are at level 3 its a very hard mech to put down. Timber Wolf is good too but not having any defense sucks.

thatroger made me a believer in the thor. I have had pretty good success with it, although my first mech choice has always been my trusty catapult. I have been trying the Bowman lately, and doing decent with it, and just within the last 2 days I have tried the Mad Cat and Prometheous.... and have done pretty well with those too. I have also used the Ragnarok and Mad Dog on occasion. I have tried most others, but not enough to say I really know how to use them.

My conclusion - most of the mechs are pretty good, it just depends on what you like.

Howdy ya'll,

in an effort to not have to fall back to just heavy armor and ton's o guns I've played pretty much only light, fast mechs since I got the game (the other mechs feel like sitting ducks to me). I've found the heavy mechs are fairly easy to take down 1v1 with a light, fast mech if you know how to play them. As always, piloting ability of the player is truely the most important aspect of the game.

Using the basis of the original BattleTech game and the concept of "balancing" a fight based on weight (ie, 200 ton's per team), and not on number of pilots, I offer the following observations...

(NOTE: these are opinions folks...mine! I know you MadCat'ers will disagree but feel free to look me up at any time to prove them to you...)

Mech's I like to use specifically are:
Elemental - pound for pound the toughest mech in the game, and it's not even a mech! Just body armor, a laser and missles (must be a lot of ammo to make the lil guy weigh 5 tons), but considering a group of Elem's can easily drop even the toughest of Mech's (Rag's generally get 3-4 kills against Elem's before they go down...of course I'm talking a team of 7v1) they're a good choice in teams. Think about the fact that a Rag is 100 tons and Elem's only 5 tons...therefore, to be fair, a Rag would have to kill 20 Elem's for each of their own death's to be considered a decent pilot I'd say.

Cougar - very tough to play well. Powered up the lasers can do okay damage and the speed is fairly good, but the lack of target jamming pretty much makes you a sitting duck if someone wants to take you down from range. Sniping or medium range missile support is what they're good at...or you can always play the rabbit and sucker in bigger mechs for your team to take out while you get behind the enemy. Just be careful when your opponent turns on you as you don't really have any decent defenses other than just pure speed...

Hackman - another of my favorites when I feel like being a sniper. Really no better way to play it since once you start running you can be targetted like any other mech. OK sniper or scout mech.

Puma - some seem to feel a puma is worthwhile as a slugger with the PPC, but still more like a sniper mech than a decent upclose fighter. Target jamming instead of cloaking would have made this guy the toughest mech IMHO, but the jump jets tend to cause this lil guy to overheat too much.

Owens - currently my favorite to play. Fast, target jamming, get in close and hammer away with the machineguns and you can easily kill any of the 100 ton mechs. This speed demon can run circles around just about any mech I've come across so far. Never overheats unless you use missiles too much, which is not even close to the best use of this mech. Get in behind an Atlas or Rag and they can't even torso-twist or turn fast enough to keep up with you. Also, if the Rag pilot likes to use his UberMega Lava Gun, being in his face puts you too close for it to even hit you...basically he fires right over your head! In a team fight this mech can completely unbalance an engagement in your favor. Most opponents, when you start peppering them with MG fire, get annoyed and come after you...this lets your team have a field day with them while they're trying to keep up with you. MadCat's seem to be the best at taking out an Owens due to the PPC's following ability, where the majority of missiles can be more easily dodged. An additional tactic to use with the Owens is to get your opponents team to shoot each other. Most folks start screaming for help to get the Owens off their back (big guys mostly) and there's nothing better than to turn a Ymir into an oncoming PPC shot or missile barrage intended for you. Keep your target between you and the rest of his team. With a bit of practice this can be easily learned. The biggest gotcha here is that you might not be able to get away too quickly when your target goes down (since you're so close when they fall)...I would say I get taken down in my own ball of fire about 15% of the time. One last word on the Owens...Jink!!! (if you don't know what that means, it's the rapid back and forth turns a fighter pilot uses to keep the enemy from being able to target you effectively...change your direction every 2-3 seconds...obviously this is good advice for all lil, fast mechs)

Kit Fox - Not bad as a little, fast scout mech, but since the blast radius of the Hammer missile (it's primary weapon) is pretty big, it doesn't do well for in-fighting, usually taking itself down with the target, if not before. You have to hang back, play support mech and be fairly good at anticipating your target's next move to make the Kit Fox really be effective, since the Hammer is a Dumb or NON-guided missile. A Bowman is usually a better choice since you trade a bit of speed and cloaking for more armor and another Earth-shattering Hammer missile.

You have to be very patient to play any of these lil guys considering that their weapons don't do nearly the same damage as the big mechs, but believe me, once you learn their strength's and weaknesses they are devastating!

Some of the posts in this thread mentioned the Catapult and Thor. Both I like for their firepower and combined abilities (target jamming & jump jets) but again they seem to overheat too much for my tastes. Catapults and MadCat's can own me if I'm caught in the open without target jamming...never a fun scene, but with jamming on...it's my backyard you're in now! A Thor is the next mech I plan to spend quite a few hours on getting to know the in's and out's of...seems like it could be the best killer in the game, just wish it was faster :)

Chrome - looking forward to playing with a Corvus!!!
(XBL - "ViolentPistol"...it's my roommate's account so if you'd like to flame me, just be sure who you're talking to or else I can't be responsible for you going down in a ball of fire!)

Nice post Chrome, the Owens has to be the most annoying mech in the game. Although a Thor can kill one with time, it take me longer to take down an Owens than a Ragnarok. I have found that just shooting them with machine guns usually gets rid of them, but the dodging makes it take much longer.

I have trouble when I am fighting a good Bowman or Mad Cat driver.

Ok you were wondering which was the best mech. The best mech is.... actually there is no best mech its just preferences. Like i personally like to get into the atlas and kill everyone up close before they can get out and can kill me from far away. In order to do that though u need to kinda "sleep" next to there spawn place or i think its called campin but anyways thats like the best way to kill with an atlas. If that dont work and your playin td try and get ur teams fast dude like a kit fox or owens and hurt them and then run. If the opponent is stupid itll follow and then when they turn the corner blast them with ur cannon and hope they fall on their back then open them up with lasers and if you dont over heat they will normally die.

Beware the Kit Fox that thing is like the Saddam of Mech Assault
Capable of mass destruction and is dangerous unless taken care of.

I must agree with Tboa on this, it's mostly the pilot not
the Mech. I've been playin (alot) since the launch of XBL,
and I believe I've seen all but the Cougar and Uller
played well enough to be considered dangerous.
But in all cases it was the pilot who was dangerous
not just the Mech.
(and the Elemental worthless)

In my case I pride myself on being a utility pilot, I can
pilot most all (no elementals please, brr) the Mechs well.
It doesn't matter what Mech I'm in, I'm dangerous to any
team. Though I do have my favorites:

Beliel- I spend most of my time here (90%). In my
opinion the best support-sniper Mech in the game.
I can take out all but the very best 1v1 in a Beliel.

Uziel- My Second choice and go to Mech for those
pesky Owens and Hackman pilots.

Catapult- The heaviest Mech I usually pilot. A great
Big Mech killer. Just a good solid all-around Mech in
any map or circumstance. Wish it was a little faster
though.

Bowman- Big Boom-Booms......"nuff said?

I do pilot the Rag, Prome, Hackman, T-Wolf, and yes
even the Mad Kitty (my comfort Mech) once in a while

But I gota say the Beliel is the best Mech 4 me in this
game, for my play style and team strategy.

Come find me and find out why................
