My Xbox and TV are downstairs and the computer and cable modem are upstairs, so my friend suggested a wireless router. My question is will it work with XBL? and also, is it expensive?

D-link has some 4 port wireless routers that will work. You need the 4 ports so that you can plug in the Cat 5 cable into the router, and then use the comps as wireless. It can get expensive when you start dropping about $100 on a wireless NIC, but shop around and you can find a deal.

They got some basic setups in TigerDirect.. if you got a Best Buy.. they carry those routers as well.. Typically I would say a little over a hundred for a 2.4ghz wireless setup with the four ports.. or maybe a little more 200 now that I think of it...
Also check your hardware and software support.. not everything is friendly even plug and play devices..lol

Guys, he obviously wants to go wireless so he doesn't have to run a line downstairs. You are telling him to run wireless to his comp and then a line down to the Xbox. That wouldn't solve his problem. He needs more than just the wireless router. Going aroudn saying you can get your Xbox online with just a wireless router is completely WRONG.
EHWfedPres,
You will need a wireless router as well as a wireless bridge. Just a wireless router will do you nothing cause you cannot use a wireless pci card in your xbox like you can in a normal comp. The wireless bridge just acts as an access point on the wireless network that you can plug regular cat5 cable into. So basically the setup would be this:
Cable Modem-> Wireless Router-> Wireless Signal-> Bridge-> Cat5 Cable-> Xbox
Obviously if your comp is next to the cable modem just run a line from the back of the wireless router to you pc. I run this same setup at home and it works great. Total your looking at $130 for the router and roughly $70 for the bridge.
Here are the two pieces of equipment I use:

Bridge

Here is a link describing why the bridge is needed:

So, what your trying to say is that I can't do this? Wireless router w/ports behind the Xbox....cat5 -> Xbox....then wireless cards for the PC's...please explain, I'd like to hear this :rolleyes:

Yeah that would work fine, problem is you are making the assumption that he has a cable outlet where his TV is located at. When your helping someone you don't always assume things just cause you think thats how it must be. He specifically said his modem is located upstairs by his comp. Did he specifically say he has a cable outlet by his TV? Maybe he is on DSL and there is no phoneline close to his TV or Xbox. Your point is valid, but I don't think you can argue the point I made either....

Just to let you know that I use the ethernet bridge and it works great. I would highly recommend it.
