Ok, I've already written a couple threads on this subject both in the general discussion and forums that had only to do with xbox live, but I haven't seemed to have gotten any replies.

I'll make this short and to the point... I've got my xbox in one room and my computer in another.. but the rooms are right next to each other. The only problem is I can't move the xbox or the computer.. How can I set them up for xbox live? Just get one really long cable to connect from my xbox to my computer or will I have to use adapters and something like 3 cables to reach? Also, what kind of cable will I have to use for that matter? Could I just use a regular phone cable?

My XBox is across a room and a hallway from my Comp. I just got a 50 ft Cat 5e Ethernet cord to connect from the xbox to the router to the modem. That should take care of it for you!

There is an infinite number of ways to solve your problem.
#1: Use a wireless router
#2: Drill a hole throught eh wall and feed some cat5 cable through.
#3: Get alot of cat5 cable and run it from your router near your computer along the floorboards out of the room, into the hallway, into the room with your xbox, and to your xbox.
#3: Do the same thing as previously said but have two wires of varying length and place the router anywhere between the computer and xbox. Ofcourse near the internet connection though.
#4: Have a new internet connection brought to the room with your xbox.
etc.

Haha, one room away and you think thats a problem? My Xbox is downstairs and the computer is upstairs! But no big deal, i just need a really long chord to run up thru the hole that the cable runs thru for the cable in the tv downstairs...i think

ok... well, is there any way I can connect my xbox straight to my computer w/o a hub or router (which I'm not too familiar with). also, how much would a 20ft. cable (the kind I would need for xbox live) cost? I know I sound pretty lost on the subject, I am, but bare with me... I don't even have my cable modem yet. I'm trying to figure all this out for when I buy it.

I am not too sure about the cable cost as it is relative to your situation. You cannot, however, connect your xbox to your computer and use the internet connection.

ok... what you're saying is I won't be able to use the internet if I hook my xbox up to my computer? so I do need a hub or router then? If so, would anyone know a price or anything else I'll need to know on the subject?

Yes, if you want to have your computer and xbox hooked up at the same time you will need either a router, hub or a switch. personally I would just go with the Router (wait, I did...). I think there is less hassle involved. Once you set it up you should never have to touch it again.

If you don't mind switching your internet connection to the xbox when you want to play LIVE and then switching the cable back to the computer when you want to go online with the computer, you can do just that.

My router cost 150$ canadian. It is cheaper these days and I have never had a problem with it. It is fully compatible with xbox LIVE. Ofcourse when you get a router, hub, or switch you will need to buy more cable. I think a general estimation for the cost would be about 30$ canadian. Although it all depends on where you buy it and how much you need. I have a Linksys router if you wanted to try one like mine out.

okay, which would work best if I am planning on hooking up my cable modem, my xbox live, and my internet/computer.. a 5 - Port Router, a 4 - Port Router, or a 2 - Port Router? Aslo, I can't remember this brand at all but I know it started with an "L" and was something like Lynux, or something like that, but I don't know anything about this brand. Anyone know what brand I'm talking about and If they're any good? How about thier cable modems? Or would I be better buying a cable modem from my local cable company since they offer to instal them? Just in need of some advice.

Is there anyway possible to buy a cable modem and have an xbox live acount with that cable modem w/o the cable modem hooked up to any computer or anything? I know this is a stupid question but it would really help me out if I could get this answered. Thanks - Matt
