Step 1: Goto www.dslreports.com/stest and run one of the tests.

Results: Normally most people will have 512kb+ download speed, so that won't be a factor.

Your upload speed is what matters most. Here are the results and what you will be able to host cleanly without lag.

<128UL 4-6 player game
<256UL 8-10 player game
<512UL 12-16 player game
<1.5UL 16 player game

Now, i know all of you hosts who KNOW your upload speed have hosted on the non required speeds, and havent seen any lag at all. This is becuase the game is being run off of your XBOX and you won't see the lag, but everyone else in the game will. Please follow these guidelines and all of us will have lag free gaming, instead of joining a room, having it lag, joining another room, having that lag, and so on until finally a good room is found.

I dont know if this is spot on but it sounds right.

2002-12-12 10:29:39 EST: 4065 / 913
Your download speed : 4065048 bps, or 4065 kbps.
A 496.2 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 913867 bps, or 913 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

And I have done 16 player games...always asking in the lobby if someone is getting lag.

Also not that if someone comes in and has a bad connection, that can affect everyone else by adding lag from their connection.

Brev, clean out you PM's man...probably your sent items from the beginning :)

I have 265 and have had one guy on a xbox in the other room and me on mine and I had a 12 player game of GR going and he was hosting a 8 player MA, and no body had lag. But there are nights like last night when I had only 3 ppl in my room (GR) and they all had lag, I do think it can at times be the other ppl, "your only as strong as your weekest link" thing.

**I did clean it out just now, sorry.

Good post Brevity. I've been thinking about posting a topic like this myself. Here is a little courtesy tip for the host.

Unless you are waiting for other players to join, you should "ready up" as soon as possible. This allows the other players to view all of the server info and change weapons if necessary. I hate it when the host makes a last second map change without telling everbody. Nothing like going through the training map with a sniper rifle and a handful of grenades. ;)

As a person that host nearly all the time I have one big problem with hitting ready first. If you are waiting for ppl or what ever *one some one could leave and the game could start with the wrong teams or way off #'s. *Two your trouble could be avoided by the host talking more and letting ppl know whats going on. *Also if say I just logged on and went ready then the first John Doe to enter also hits read well then its game on with no more then 2 ppl. So ya your trouble is BAD but your solution needs to be that the HOST talks with ppl and no suprises.

Simple solution - go back to the lobby if the teams are too far off.

*Two your trouble could be avoided by the host talking more and letting ppl know whats going on. I agree. However, most hosts don't do this.

*Also if say I just logged on and went ready then the first John Doe to enter also hits read well then its game on with no more then 2 ppl. Well, if you just logged in, you're obviously still waiting for players so you wouldn't "ready up" anyway.

So ya your trouble is BAD but your solution needs to be that the HOST talks with ppl and no suprises. I have had hosts say one thing and then when we get into the game it is different. Usually this applies to number of spawns or time limits which isn't that big of a deal. However, it has occasionally been with maps as well, or not knowing the difference between MP and M maps. Regardless of whether it is intentional or accidental, it can be frustrating.

BTW Brevity, I've never had any problems with this when you're hosting. We can never get you to shut up. :p ;)

i wonder how many of those freaking laggers are trying to use dialup or some slow ass "broadband" connection to connect to LIVE. Soon as they do join (assuming they can) they will degrade everything... oh well... In my opinion, the world will be a better place when things called "phone lines" are a thing of the past.

Agreed, I know a person that has tried to do some rigging to get his XBOX on with just a 56k account. According to him he got it to work, but gave the whole thing up b/c of lag. I cant see why someone would do that, and ya I have had rooms that were fine till this guy comes in talken s-d-k-c-,,,,you cant hear him then the games are laggen and I am like WTF. I give ppl little room for error though, I kick and kick quick for crap like that.

On another note I am finding way more ppl who find it fun as hell to kill themselves and their teammates. I have had to leave two games and kicked 3 ppl for this. **Cough** Darks BRO** I dont allow it so I cant see the fun in it. MOst of the time they can only get one or two kills out of it. Thats just silly.

I have a 900+ upload (can't give a link to test results because im at work not at home) but when I start a game it is say checking connection the number of players suggested is never more then 4

I have hosted HUGE 12 play Halo games and no one complaned of LAG but it seems on LIVE I my connection isnt as good. . . . Anyon knw why this might be?

Upload speed is very important when dealing with many players, but it is not the only factor.

Ping rate is a very important factor. Try pinging your gateway (see your ISP settings) ideally, you should be 10ms and below. If it is much higher than that, you may want to contact your ISP, could just be a problem with your line. In gaming, ping can be your entire world.

If your gateway ping is good, but the ping to the xbox servers are not (above 50ms), there isn't much your ISP will do, it is probably either MS's fault or something screwey in the path. You can do a tracert to find out where the slowdown may be occuring.

Normally, clients lag will affect their play more than yours, unless you have one jumping around like a whackamole in your sniper scope, then it can get irritating.

I have noticed that when you host a game and noone is joining or they can't join, and you are in there alone remembering your last experience, try starting the game with just you in it. You will of course be instantly victorious, but 99% of the time, when you come out of the game, there are at least 2-3 people in the room waiting for you. It is definitely a glitch, and I am not sure why it is happening.

This will even work when you only have 2-3 people in the room, have them ready up, abort the game, and when you come back out, you should see people in the room. Notice, when you start a game, the messages indicate people joining the room right away. Seems to be a bug in the GR Live.

It seems the invite query sometimes fills the room even when noone appears to be accepting the invites. One way around this is to jump in and jump out of the game. Sometimes I have found that I had to start a new host to fix the problem.

Hope this helps :Þ

Thanks and also you can turn explosives off and that keeps lag down and can allow that extra person in if its tight.

When I was in BETA they (SLIM) said that those stats dont matter, they are some how buggy or do not show what they should.

Those are lousy download rates, I have a feeling you need to tweak your connection a bit by usint DRTCP:

http://www.dslreports.com/front/drtcp.html

This will tweak out your connection. It made a big improvement in my connection. There are links to the forums that will explain it better on the above page.

Your upload tests seem to be in reverse, but if your sure they are not, try the above tweak methods.

New HOSTING tip.
I have told you how to kick ppl in the Lobby, search my name if you need to know. But now there seems to be a new problem facing the host. Ppl NOT YOU but other players seem to get stuck in that screen b/w game and lobby the one where you see the kills. There are two ways to handle this I will tell you the fasts and easiest one. As the host you can put ppl in observer status then you can start the game by reading up you self with all others in observer. The game will end quickly and all will work again. Now how to put ppl in observer. First press start and click "lock teams" then click "set teams" (not that I am at school and doing this from memory so the names might be a little off). At set teams select a player and then hit a scroll down to the bottom right where the observer sign is and click a again, do this for all. Back out and hit ready to begin. This works 100% of the time. ;)
