what kind of multiplayer modes does gr have

hwo come when I play with my friends (not on LIVE), I dont see this other multiplayer modes? all i see is tournament, adversarial, and cooperative. even after i choose one of those, i just choose maps and enter gameplay. are those LIVE only modes? I sure hope not.
