is there any way of telling if ur connection will work with xbox live? could I plug my xbox into my internet and somehow be told by the xbox that it is a live connection? or does the xbox live kit come with something like that?

Ya get a online game and let it load the XBL stuff, it auto does this then go to the XBL setup on the dash. Go down to network setup (I think thats what its called) then tell it to connect. At the end press Y.
