View Full Version : UL & DL on the DASH(what they really mean)

THis is from Fortress at the Xb forums I believe he is a MS guy
Yes, the "UL" and "DL" values do mean "upload" and "download", just in case there was any doubt remaining.

However, it should be stressed that this screen is a diagnostic tool intended for our support staff to troubleshoot connection problems. As with *any* tool, you must understand that tool's limitations if you are to use it effectively.

Firstly and most importantly – the Xbox measures bandwidth using a completely different method than a tool like this one: http://www.dslreports.com/stest/0.

The dslreports tool works by uploading and downloading hard to compress data to and from their servers. The tool on dslreports.com provides a reasonably accurate bandwidth estimate, but it takes about 40 seconds to do so.

This method is simply not suitable for in-game applications. Think about the Optimatch screen in Unreal Championship. It displays 20 sessions, along with a speed rating for each of them. If it took 40 seconds to check the speed of each session, it would take over 13 minutes to display this screen! Therefore the Xbox uses a much faster, but also less accurate method to test the upload and download speed. But you'll notice that games like Unreal Championship don't tell you what the actual measurement was, they simply say "one star" or "four stars". The measurement is accurate enough to categorize these connections as "good" or "bad", which is all we really need.

This is the measurement that is being displayed in the Xbox Dashboard diagnostic screen. It is not at all surprising that these values differ widely from the results you might obtain from a tool such as the one on dslreports.com.

Second, rest assured that your Xbox is able to use all the bandwidth you've available to you on your network connection. Just because the Xbox Dashboard displays a number that is lower than the value displayed by dslreports.com does not mean that the Xbox will only use that much bandwidth. Each game will try to use whatever bandwidth it needs for the number of players in the session. If you push your connection to far, for example by trying to host a 16 player Unreal Championship session on a slow connection, then you or the people playing with you may experience lag or disconnection, but that is not because of this measurement value. The game will try to use every last bit of bandwidth, if it needs to.

Third, be aware that all the devices connected to your high speed internet connection via a home network *share* that bandwidth. There have been forum posts where people ask "why does the Xbox say I have less bandwidth if I am downloading a big file on my PC?" This is simply because you are sharing the available bandwidth between the PC and the Xbox, and if the PC is using more of that bandwidth, then there is less left over for the Xbox to use.

Hopefully this has cleared up some misconceptions about the "UL" and "DL" values displayed in the diagnostic screen of the Xbox Dashboard.

Remember:
- the values are simply an estimate, and are not completely accurate
- your Xbox games can use all the bandwidth available to you no matter what these values say
- if you use your PC at the same time as your Xbox, there will be less network bandwidth left over for your Xbox

Umm....duh?

The tool on dslreports.com provides a reasonably accurate bandwidth estimate, but it takes about 40 seconds to do so.

It doesn't take 40 seconds...

hey, where do see this UL/DL speed thing on the dash. I cant find it. I just got my DSL and I wanna see my speed and compare it to a guy with the other broadband in my town, cable. Give me specific directions please, EXACTLY what you go to, becuase I can be dumb at times ;).

Jerred, as brevity said, the xbox dash speeds are kinda skewed. You need to go to dslreports.com to get a more accurate portrail of what your speeds are as compared to other providers. But if you are still gung-ho about checking it on the xbox, if I remember right you troubleshoot your connection, and after it connects through all four steps you press Y.

Brevity, great info, where did you find it exactly?

Go to the screen where you "connect". It will test your cables, IP, DNS, etc. Then press Y to get the UL and DL.

Now, as for the article, that's pretty straight forward. And DSL reports only takes about 15 seconds.

Now, I know I have between 1200kbps-1250kbps, so this tool is completely useless when it tells me I only have 800kbps.

Sorry you think I am lazy, but there are billions of internet pages on the web and instead of sorting through them all I figured I would just ask you since you have obviously already found the info. In fact, it is good ettiquite to post your sources in your post if you are citing information from somewhere else, so if anything, you are being lazy for not giving credit where credit was due.

Brevity, it is not a 'stick in my ass' or anything like that. I told you that you happened to find good info and asked where you got it, to which you called me lazy. Did I call you 'idiot' because you didn't cite your material in the first place? No. It's called courtesy, not depression. Though irritated might be coming into play, especially when I am called lazy, depressing, and told I have a stick up my ass by someone who is hell bent on being a mod for some reason and is destroying every chance he might have had by saying the things he does.

Brevity did say he got it from somewhere else. Just not exactly where. Big deal.

dslreports.com takes a couple seconds...never counted exactly, somewhere around 5. www.pcpitstop.com is faster and gives better results, for me anyway...there must be better links between me and them or their servers are better or ot used as much...

First "HELL BENT on becomming a mod" what the hell. I would like you to point out how thats relevent to this thread, or how its true. Out side of one thread and a few PM's a while back this is not true no way am I hell bent I think I know where Dar sold his crystal ball. This you have writtin is the first time you have truely sounded like an idiot. Anyway b/c I write jokingly (at first) to you I am messing up any chances I have, I think somebody has a big head. How bout this, thanks for the inf,o but you let me worry about me sweetie. ;)

Brevity, to be perfectly honesty with you, I have no idea what you just said. Your grammar and syntax is so incredibly muddled that I really can't understand what you are saying. Maybe hell bent is a little strong of a word, but after PMing EVERY mod, making posts about how you think you should be a mod and including comments like "...if ever made a mod I will have these thoughts down to work form in following through on these ideas." in your posts, it seems you are a little obsessive with it. Go count how many of my posts before I became a mod asked or mentioned me being a mod... I think you will find the number to be right around zero.

Big head? No. Patience? Starting to lose it. I don't know Brev, sometimes your posts are clear, well thought out and have a lot of intelligence behind them. Other times they are like the one you just posted: confusing and lacking in thought. I like the prior more than the latter personally.

First "every mod" that is wrong I did not PM every mod. And the comment I made about using that info was to say that I would be able to use the stuff if given the power nothing more. Again you exaggerate, but hay thats you opinion and thats fine. I however do not think so. I really dont care if you never asked to be a mod, that once again is not of my concern, but good for you. I should say that you are not my role model. I have handled things like content of posts B4 but since you missed that I will say that, (first thanks for your complement ) I am sure you know not many ppl here spend that much time thinking how to best make their post correct from a English teacher standpoint. And I find the faster I write the less I take those kinds of ideas into consideration as do we all I am sure. I have to write alot for what I do and have always enjoyed how laid back the writting is here, I think I will stick to how I write now. I also have reread (I did change some spelling things right after I did that post;) ) and find that its not at all unreadable perhaps its just you looking for a fault.

Not looking for a fault, looking for a point. Brevity, you are totally riding my case for doing my job. Here are some of the things I have done that are part of what I have been tasked to do:

1. Moved threads to appropriate forums. I did this and you got on my case.
2. Close down threads that are doubles or other forms of spam. I did this too and you rode my case about it as well.
3. Tell people that asking to be a mod or discussing being a mod that there is no chance of this if they ask or mention it. Did this as well, and wouldn't you know it? There is brevity riding my case about it.
4. Do not flame other members of the forums. Hmm, I called you on calling me and other mods lazy, whether or not it was a joke, because me and others didn't take it as one. Following the progressing pattern, you rode my case about it.

I am not looking to be your role model, I am looking to make sure the rules of these forums are enforced and everything is where it should be. I don't care whether or not you like me for what I do, as I do it because I am supposed to. I realize that nobody likes a cop but sometimes that is the role the mods need to play. Not because we hate you or other members, but because the rules apply to everyone, not just blatant spammers and flameboys.

Anyways, this is so totally off subject it hurts, so I am done. Any further complaints can be taken up with me, my coworkers, or any of my superiors. Thank you.

no, either it gets back on topic or i'll enjoy closing yet another thread. If you have an issue with a mod, you need to use private messaging or email, not the forum. Same goes the other way as well.

Brevity... you only messaged the mods who wouldn't ban you (like me cause i'm layed back and easy going). :D
