I have a friend (Ken) we both got xbox's the day they came out. He screwed his up by putting a "burned" audio cd with songs recorded in mp3 and regular cd format. My question is this;
Can you play/record burned cds (regular cd music files, not mp3's)on to the xbox hard-drive? Another friend of mine burned me a copy of the new 50 cent album and I want to put it into my xbox soundtrack. All the record stores near me are sold out otherwise I would probably just go buy an original and copy it on to my xbox hard drive. Has anyone copied burned cd's on to their xbox?

Thanks for replying.

Well, older Xboxes can play game discs (duh... :D), music CDs and CD-RWs. Xboxes with the new disc drives can play all of those and CD-Rs as well. The only reason the original ones can't play CD-Rs is because the laser wasn't strong enough to read them.

As for actual files, you can't put on a burned disc of MP3s, but a burned music CD should work just fine, as long as it's burned onto an RW disc if you have an older system.

ok what happend to ken's xbox to 'screw' it up?

the answer is probably not. if you got an xbox the day they came out then they hardly read any cd-r's but read a fair few cd-rw's.

the method is to buy a cd-rw (re writable) and try burning on differant speeds in diff programs. until one works. i know that several cd-rw's dont work. heres a list

-----
WORK:
-----

- normal compact disks that are bought in music shop

- city circiut cd-r

-Memorex CD-RW 700MB/80Min 1-4x (white label)

-Hewlett-Packard CD RW 650MB/74Min 1-4x (white/purple label)

-Imation CD-RW 700MB (Part #17010420 on inside cover of jewel case)

-Office Depot 700MB/80min

-CompUSA 650MB/74min

-Mitsui 650MB/74min and 700MB/80min

-TDK 650MB/74min

-Cursor and Giga Storage 700MB/80min

-Apparently Verbatim CDRW work as well.

-----------
DON'T WORK:
-----------

-Durabrand Audio CD-R 700MB/80Min 16x Multispeed (grey/black label)

-PNY CD-R 700MB/80Min ?x (silver/frosted label)

-Sony CD-RW Model #CD-RW650

-Maxell CD-RW Model #CD-RW High Speed 650 (Reorder #630020 on the back)

-Sony CD-R 650MB Model #CDQ-74CN

-Maxell CD-R 650MB (Reorder #623310 on the back)

-Memorex CD-RW 700MB (Part # 3202 3406 on the back of box)
These are the same white label Memorex CD-RW that an earlier poster got to work with a HP Writer.

-Imation 650MB/74min and 700MB/80min

-Kingston Hypermedia 650MB/74min and 700MB/80min

-Digital Research 700MB/80min

-PNY 700MB/80min

-Memorex 700MB/80min

p.s. i have never tried any of these so dont blame me if the info is incorrect.

good luck

Nice list!

I know for an absolute fact that Memorex CD-RW 650's (green covers) will work when burned at 2X. That's what I do when I want to get certain songs onto my Xbox, like stuff I've put onto CD from my rather huge LP collection. :D

EDIT - I've also tried these, with success:

Imation CD-RW 650 burned at 2X

Acer CD-RW 650 (came with my drive) burned at 2X

All I know is that my friend Ken put the disk into his xbox to listen to it, and then his xbox didn't work anymore. He returned it but didn't get another xbox (until just recently). I called him on this matter and he said "dont do it". the disk in question is a Fujifilm cd-r 700mb 80 min. Is it safe to try or shoud I not even mess with it? I just dont want to mess up my box but I dont see why it should. It seems to me that if it doesn't read it, thats no reason why it should break my xbox. thanks again for posting.

Putting any disc, unless it contians some sort of virus, into your xbox will not screw it up. Even if your friend says that the CD screwed up his xbox, I can almost garuantee its not true. A laser that is scanning magnetic signals won't be broken if the format of those signals changes.

Hey thanks for that list Rochey69r. I made myself a nice metal mix for sega gt and was a little bummed when my box wouldn't read the disk (I was using the Memorex 700MB/80min). I'll have to pick up some of those CD's that work.
