Myself and Maximus have battle this topic for some good time now. He is in favor of Xbox while I give the nod to Dreamcast.
who do you all feel had the best launch in videogame history and why?

My opinion- Sega Dreamcast on 9/9/99

Reason:games,
Soul Calibur (best.fighter.ever), NFL2K (Madden killer), Sonic Adventures & Power Stone. Just to name a few. DC shipped with 19 titles (same as Xbox). Cover all gernes except RPG (then again, who ever had a rpg launch game?).
True Sega did not have the finances to advertise all across television but they did their best.
DC is (in my opinion) the most revolutionary system ever. The first console for online multi-player match ups. Internet access right out the box.
I think Xbox comes in second, followed by..... well. No one.
PSOne & PS2 launches were lack luster, while Nintendo could neve ship more than 2 to 3 games for any of their launches. yeah GameCube had more than that, but can you tell?
what do you guys think?

yo 1337h4x!
what does the best console launch ever have to do with being the next to come out after Atari?
NES didnt have anything to offer other than the pack in game Mario/Duck Hunt.
There was nothing else to getexcited about until after the system had more gamescome out fo it. And that wasmonths down the road.

Ninja Scroll either likes to debate or cannot pull his thumb out of his ass. I'm guessing he likes to debate :D

The XBox launch is the most impressive of all time. When did you you see a group of Dreamcast 16 Wheelers travel the country? Also, how many Dreamcast Monster Trucks did you see?

How many Dreamcast commercials have their been? And, exactly how many websites were there dedicated to the DC that come remotely close to this one?

Don't get me wrong, I loved the Dreamcast. I just don't think that Sega did what it could have to market the Dreamcast. Playstation creamed it in marketing.

XBox has a $500 Million marketing budget! That's more that Sega's revenues! lol

poor, poor maximus.
what does the marketing muscle have to do with what you saw at launch day in stores?
yes, Sega could have marketed DC better, yes Sega got creamed by Sony. But all of that has nothing to do with what you saw on the EB store walls.
Dreamcast delivered classics on Day 1 junior.
Yeah, xbox has Halo, but everything else cant compare to the DC's launch line up. Soul Calibur is still the fighter to beat still after 2 years on the shelves.
Fever fears the 2k series.

And dont act like DC was dead from the get go. They did sell over 300,000 on 9/9/99 alone. Over 95 million in one day.
Yeah, I like to debate about things that are worth my time.
But what's all this truck/monster truck shinanigans you are running your mouth about?

Ninja...the fact that you are questioning me about the 16 wheelers and the monster trucks, etc, tells me that you didn't see very much of Microsoft's marketing approach. They did, and are doing, some amazing stuff in regards to marketing.

But, I see that is not really what you were referring to. You are, more or less, my little tiny friend, referring to what you saw at stores. First and foremost, you have to look beyond Electronics Boutique. The store is a little small...go to a local Best Buy or something and you will see a much more impressive line up. I'm not kididng, they must stock their shelves every hour or something!

But, in any event, the line up, to me, was pretty impressive. Halo, being one of the 19 games, has set a new benchmark for FPS, as you have heard. Project Gotham Racing has set a new standard for exotic racing titles. NFL Fever was introduced to the gaming industry and has blown out every long lasting football game out and is starting out ahead of where Madden and NFL2K2 left off (that's pretty impressive, in my opinion). These are just a few little examples.

Also, take into consideration that after only one month and a half, the XBox will have over 30 games available. The Dreamcast didn't do that. Came close, but, not quite there. The greatness of Soul Caliber will be enhanced on the XBox, but, I know you already can see this.

But, my little tiny friend, you need to back up your debates with more facts and not spread your opinions so much. Yes, Soul Caliber was a good game, but, it didn't set a new bench mark for fighting games, etc. Unless, if you think it did, how so? That's what I am looking for....my little teeny tiny friend :D

Um,.....tiny little friend?....er.. whatever.
Anyways, stop trying to make my words out to be something else.
I said go to your local EB store and look at the shelves. yo, I could had said toys R us or Circuit City. It doesnt matter. i know about Best Buy.

Why dont you stick to the subject and not wonder off on stupid stuff like who has the bigger store! Come on now slim.
your right, I have not been paying (not much) if any attention to Microsofts ad campains.
For what, i dont care about the hype.
I love Shenmue, but im not all over the internet trying to get every da@mn detail about Shenmue II.
That's like me wanting all the Spider-Man news, but the freakin movie aint coming out until next year.
I aint got time for that ***** kid.

Oh, what's so wonderful about Soul Calibur? Did you ever buy the game?
If you did then I dont need to explain why nothing out today can touch it.
But if that's what you want, i'll deliver da good.

Again, my tiny little eenie bitty wittle fwend...lol...

Show me the facts. You say that the DC launch is better, however, you are lacking the facts. The only fact that I see is that the DC had 19 games just like the XBox. What makes the DC launch better just by simply having the exact same amount of launch titles? For instance, did any of the DC games produce a new benchmark for a specific genre? If so, please describe how and what game it was. That's what I am looking for. I'm trying to help you out...you know, being the little tot that you are :D

Just for the books, let it be known...I am a big DC fan...I just think that the XBox launch was more impressive. I was more excited about XBox than I was about the DC. I have been looking forward to the XBox for two solid years...no other system has ever done that for me...not even close.

I agree, you guys are acting like little kids! I'm 15 and you guys sound too immature for me. Who cares which was better? Right now the XBox is better than the Dreamcast. Dreamcast was good for awhile. They both seem about the same at launch. There is no use arguing because I can already tell that neither of you are going to change your minds. So kiss and make up!:D

Well the only reason DC was ood was the fact that I got it on 9.10.99 It had great games like sonic adventure. Then by about 5 months I got bored because the games sucked, nothing was happening so I traded it in for a MP3 player. It sucked because I only got $100 for the beast (when its price was $199) But I guess it was good because it was the first of the next gen consoles and was around a long time before any competition. I guess you could say it had the best launch...but you cant ignore the fact that this thing now sucks, and has for quite some time. It was also interesting to get a 56k modem with the thing<start Xbox side> The $50 is the same price as Halo. Id take Halo any day. The best game for DC was either Sonic Adventure or NFL2k. Compare that to Halo and NFL Fever 2002. The games, eh? Xbox launch titles simply own DC launch titles...Hell, Halo is prolly better than the best game for the DC. My Xbox has built in broadband capabilities and tomorrow once I get my **** crossover cable I can play Halo online. Could Sega do this within their first month. Now I know you will say that the ways you play Halo and such dont have anything to do with MS. Well ok, but all they do is create a virtual LAN, sooo even the fact that a buddy can come over and bring his Xbox and we could play together would be great.
In terms of the best launch...I dont really know what exactly everyone likes in the best launch, but in terms of avilability the DC would win, but its seeming pretty easy to get an Xbox by Christmas. Games...well I think Xbox wins (yes 1 or 2 great games can make up for a few good games on DC) Also I hope Xbox wont have any Blue Stinger like games...What else is there to go on, hype? Well the reason hype was bigger for the DC was simple. Did you hear of Xbox back then? In addition, being games like NFL2k looked so realistic, but the only competitor was the crappy PSX. Ok I rest my case on that one. If only DC wouldnt of felt like a waste of money it might of been good. And the VMU was, I have to say a great idea...but it wasnt really used enough in games. In addition it didnt hold enough stuff and the battery life sucked. Umm thanks DC for the controller tho!

I didnt, seemed almost surreal that SEGA would not make hardware anymore...but now its great because they can make games for my Xbox

It's the gamers that said im gonna wait until next year for the PS2 that screwed Sega Dreamcast over. NOT SEGA!

umm DC did come out a year early...that was the secret to its short sucess...no way it could of came out in 98

Yes I remember that day very well, like I said it couldnt of came out in 98, wh,ich would of been a year earlier like Tk421 suggested. I was saying that it came out early enough, and there is no way it would of came out a year earlier, thus making it 98

Yo, it does'nt matter if Dreamcast came out in 87, 89, 98, Sega Dreamcast was never a failure. It made money, just not enough to ge Sega out of the "red" that they have been in for several years now.
Only going 3rd party was gonna save their asses. Im tired of everyone ripping Sega just because of past mistakes such as Sega CD & 32X. Saturn was'nt a mistake, Sony just out classed Sega in 95.

Frostberg
12-06-2001, 06:34 PM
but the DC did come out a year early...and it did dominate the market until about march of this year when the PS2 was actually a little easier to find...until everyone realized how much the real next gen systems were, then they realized DC didnt look that good.

Sup maximus.
It's good to know their is one person out their other than myself that has never bought a Sony system.
Now I will admite that I did purchase Metal Gear Solid, and that was only so I could play it on my Dreamcast with the "bleemcast" boot-up disk
by the way, the game ruleson DC. Note: R.I.P Bleem, thank you for screwing Sony with your bleemcast versions of MGS, Tekken 3, & GT2.

Well anyways max, the only systems I ever owned was NES, Gameboy (the original big ass one), Genesis, 32X, Saturn, & Dreamcast. Xbox will be my first non-Sega console in over a decade!!!!!!!! ouch!

As far a Saturn goes, I used to have one until it got stolen :(
But I dont know about finding games in stores, but you can always go to Ebay. They got them all for dirt cheap prices. Except for the super rare Panzer Dragoon RPG one.

Hey, folks...This has to be some pretty impressive statistics...but, the XBox will have exactly 46 games (that I am aware of) out by the end of December. Now, that is d a m n impressive. The system will have only been out for 46 days by then! Think about that! Now, that's an impressive ratio. One game for every single day the XBox has been out.

I don't think Sega DC pulled that one off :D

Move on my ass!
I will always love my DC too. And Sega is the only company I have ever had hardware of for over a decade. That is until this Friday when I get my Xbox:) Along with Halo & DOA3.
(thanx 2 Maximus, EGM and the other in this forum).
So I guess I kinda did move on since I will be with Microsoft.

As far as no good games for DC?
Answer: Soul Calibur, 2K series, Skies Of Arcadia, RE:2, RE:CV, ect.

Frostberg

Sure there were good games, but there arent good games anymore once you played them. And those games are all moving over in newer versions so its good you got an XBox...but the DC is still dead!:D
