Over the course of the past few months, Sonic Team has been steadily working on a new Sonic game named Sonic Heroes. Unlike the Sonic Adventure series, Sonic Heroes seems to place an emphasis on action, much like the older Sonic the Hedgehog games. In the game, you can select from one of four teams--Team Chaotix, Team Rose, Team Dark, and Team Sonic. Unfortunately, we only got to see Team Sonic, which is made up of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.

These characters essentially follow each other throughout the entire level, so you can switch between them and make use of each character's special abilities. Tails is able to fly, so he can carry Sonic and Knuckles across great distances or reach platforms that would otherwise be inaccessible. Naturally, Sonic is the fastest of the group, and he also has a hurricane attack that he can use to defeat groups of enemies. Knuckles can glide, punch, and throw Sonic and Tails like projectiles.

There will be 14 stages in the game, each of which will pan out differently, depending on the team and path taken. There will also be different objectives that you will have to fulfill in order to successfully complete a level. There are plans to include multiplayer support as well. Sonic Heroes is scheduled for release later this year.

yeah, when I rented that a loved it. But it'll have to go down in price before a but it. Become a greatest hit or something. After all, it's the same games ive played b4.

As for the new sonic on Xbox, awesome! I just hope they don't take it the same direction as SA2, where it was all boring platforming. More Sonic=More Fun=More Sales!!!

BTW, WTF was with sonic in a ball on the first screenshot? Is this Super Hedgehog Ball now or what?

Sonic Heroes Hands-On
Three Sonics are better than one.

May 14, 2003 - The original Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the best platformers of all time. As the 2D world faded away, however, Sonic had trouble transitioning to the new 3D universe. Both Dreamcast Sonic Adventure games were not exactly good. So when Sega announced Sonic Heroes for all platforms, my interest was somewhere between nowhere and even further from nowhere. However, after playing a little Sonic Heroes my tune has changed. This game may not end up being as memorable as the original, but it should definitely put a smile on the face of those disappointed by the last two Adventures.
Playing as Sonics, Tails, and Knuckles at the same time, Sonic Heroes appears to have ditched the annoying "adventure" aspects of the Dreamcast game and returned with some solid platforming action. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails travel in a pack. With the press of the corresponding face button (icons remain in the top right corner of the screen) you can switch the leader of the trio at any time.

You control the leader, the others merely follow. The leader determines the formation nad the attack abilities. So, when you have Knuckles in charge, the team is in a power formation. Sonic and Tails play wingmen, giving you the widest spread across the screen. Sonic is the speed formation. Knuckles and Tails form a line behind Sonic and speed through an area. Tails is the vertical formation, as Sonic and Knuckles grab hold of Tails and the little one flies them around.

Each formation clearly has its own benefits. Sometimes you need to smash through big blocks. For that, Knuckles is your man. And if you see a bunch of rings spread out across a runway, then having the Power formation, with all three members spread out, will virtually ensure you collect every ring. The Tails formation is great when you want to avoid touching the ground, or when you find yourself making a large leap.

The platform levels are very reminiscent of the Dreamcast ones, with the exception that they run fast, smooth, and the camera did not once make me vomit. The design, though, it pretty much the same, with the exception of some changes to accommodate the three-character gameplay.

Outlook
Sonic Heroes wasn't a game I was looking forward to coming into E3, but it's made a big leap up my list from #1057 to maybe #108. That's pretty significant. Should further gameplay prove that the three-character formation creates some unique puzzle elements and that some of the later levels are visually unique from the previous Adventures, then Sonic Heroes could easily crack my top 100. Sega has definitely made some strides to improve this franchise, but whether or not it all pays off remains to be seen.
