I AM WORRIED THAT ALL THESE MAJOR TITLES THAT ARE COMING OUT ONLINE ARE GOING TO HAVE SOME KIND OF LAG OR SOME OTHER PROBLEM LIKE GETTING BOOTED OUT OF GAMES. I REALLY DID NOT HAVE THIS WORRY MUCH UNTIL RTCW CAME OUT. I CAN ONLY PLAY THIS GAME WITH 6 PLAYERS WITHOUT GETTING LAG AND SOMETIMES I STILL GET IT. EVERYONE TELLS ME TO GO TO DEDICATED SERVERS BUT IT DOESNT LET ME IN, TELLS ME MY CONNECTION SPEED IS NOT ENOUGH. I HAVE 1.5 MEG SERVICE RIGHT NOW, I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. IF THEY SAY A GAME IS 16 PLAYER ONLINE, THATS WHAT IS SHOULD BE. YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO MESS AROUND WITH A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT SERVERS LIKE YOU DO ON PC'S. NOW WHEN I HERE ABOUT THESE GAMES COMING OUT THIS FALL I DO NOT GET EXCITED, MY CONFIDENCE IS RUNNING SHORT. THEY NEED TO KEEP IT SIMPLE LIKE THEY SAID IT WAS GOING TO BE. NEVERMIND ABOUT SCREWING AROUND TRYING TO FIND DIFFERENT SERVERS AND ALL THAT CRAP...THERE SHOULD BE A LOBBY AND I SHOULD BE ABLE TO ENTER INTO A GAME WITHOUT ANY CRAP ABOUT MY CONNECTION SPEED. THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT AGREE WITH ME ON THIS ONE. I HEAR THE COMPLAINTS ABOUT IT WHEN WE ARE PLAYING RTCW.

One, it might honestly be your connection.

Two, check out the caps lock button once in a while.

Three, I think a lot of people are concerned with this, but I honestly think that MS will be smart enough to start using their own dedicated servers for their games in the future.

I did a test at verizon dsl test site and my connection said i was at 1mb spped. Is this good or not ? Also i do not have any problem with any other game i play, except maybe U.T. The piont is all that is required is dsl, i have that and just upgraded, if that is not good enough then what the hell. Maybe microsoft next will tell us we need t-3 service.

p.s. sorry about the caps lock.

What was your 1mb speed?

Really when it comes to XBL your main concern is your upload, so check that.

And as far as you not having this concern until 1 game came out (RTCW) well, maybe you should look at it like it wasn't a problem except with 1 out of how many titles?

Add good servers to your FL and your problem won't happen as often (unless it's on your side) I rarely have lag problems unless I join a random game.

I have had problems with return to castle wolfenstien, i hope that future games that support 16 players does not have the same problem.

Yuup, I am a Noob! And an accountant, so I don't know much about computers, but I LOVE Gaming on my X-Box.

If anyone can help, here are my questions:

1. What exactly is a dedicated server.

2. Is it something MS has the ability to create for us Live users and if so, is it feasable?

3. What is a good upload speed?

4. Does 1,000 Kbps equal 1 Mbps?

Thanks for your help and Patience!

Good question.

1. What exactly is a dedicated server.

When someone (either another user or MS) sets up a server used to host games. This is setup so that a person is not needed to be involved in the games and the rounds/maps/settings can be set via votes by the guests to the server.

2. Is it something MS has the ability to create for us Live users and if so, is it feasable?

MS can do it and does, for games such as UC and RTCW, and will be doing it for future games. Yes, it is, as alot of people don't have the great connection that is needed in some games to host all of the time, nor are they always online, like MS' would be.

3. What is a good upload speed?

This is what I have used for people to host RTCW -
Reference list for smooth play: (upstream KBPS)
Below 100KBPS- DO NOT HOST
Between 100-200KBPS- 4 players MAX (2 optimal)
Between 200-300KBPS- 8 MAX (4-6 optimal)
Between 300-500KBPS- 8 to 12 MAX (test it first)
Above 500KBPS HOST EVERY TIME YOU PLAY!

/4. Does 1,000 Kbps equal 1 Mbps?

Yes :D

I have the same worries man, I know halo2 will be laggy. I mention only that because I am currently obsessed with it.
:hail: halo2

But I agree with whoever said it earlier, MS will prolly be smart enough to host their own servers for future games because there are few games which you can play totally lag free.

at the begining when i had UC, there was like at least 2 MS servers in each category of the gameplay(DM,TDM,BR,CTF, etc).

now, a month after that, they disapeared. and i havent seen them around lately since then in any games.

maybe they are waiting for the free subscribtion to expired so ppl can start paying month by month or for the whole year subscribtion. the moeny would prolly go to the Xservers to host games.

i just hope that halo 2 will not be like RTCW (lag issues that is)

Re. "Dedicated Servers." As I understand it, these can be a player's spare Xbox, set up to serve games only (and the player cannot play on that box himself). Like, in RTCW, you'll see a lot of of "dedicated servers," but these are people's spare Xbox's.

I'd be really surprised if MS didn't run a bunch of their own servers for Halo2 at the beginning. This is easily the most hyped game coming, and MS will be looking to sell some systems w/ it.

Whether they'll disappear eventually like UC's is another question.

Just do what people have suggested here. The big thing is upload, and if yours is low, ID say below 200kb/s, dont bother, ie like mine. Find some friends, like ones I have that are good.

I just ran my speed tests, and of course its cable so it varies with time, my upload was at 2184 KB/sec, thats "off the charts" and better than most T1's. If only DL mattered or my UL was as good as my DL

Best thing to do is find friends who have good connections, this is one important reason to not cheat and be an a s s online.

Man 2184 KB/sec, thats awesome
ran again 2330kb/s
again for highspeed test
a whopping 2919 kb/sec on the outside test.

holy, now its at 3015
Sorry abou that crap ^

I can host 16 people on XBox Live if everyone is on the West Coast, seemingly. I have 608K upload. But, if people are from Cambodia or something, I just keep it at 12 people max.

By the way, "the more the better" is just a myth.
