While Gray Matter's last game, Return to Castle Wolfenstein single-player, didn't exactly re-invent the first-person shooter genre, it's sublime visuals and combination on World War II and occult themes made it an enjoyable romp.

Hence we were keen to check out the developer's latest project Trinity at E3, another first-person shooter that's heading to Xbox and PC that whisks us away to near-future New Orleans in 2013 and drops us into the shoes of a super-being with bio-augmentations known only as the Nightstalker.

The plot of Trinity is reasonably familiar, New Orleans being the victim of a killer plague and the Nightstalker, suffering from amnesia, attempting to uncover the truth behind the sinister plight affecting the city while at the same time trying to discover exactly who he is.

Trinity is being built on an enhanced Quake 3 engine, the game's urban environments and police/SWAT-style enemies that we encountered looking suitably impressive. From sneaking down alleys to leaping across rooftops to negotiating fire escapes, the level of detail on show was enough to suspend disbelief and immerse us in the near-future, plague-ridden world of the Big Easy.
