Pirates of the Caribbean

Okay, someone has to stop Bethesda Softworks before they suck the rest of my life out through my eyes. The hit success of Morrowind wasn't enough for them? They had to deliver a rollicking pirate adventure to their legions of sleep-deprived fans? I cheer them. I curse them. I grab my controller and say please, sir, may I have another!

http://www.xbox.com/media/games/piratesofthecaribbean/sim-piratesofthecaribbean-0001.jpg

Pirates of the Caribbean is shaping up to be just as fun and addictive as Morrowind, only this time, the roleplaying-style adventure has moved to the high seas and added an incredible ship-to-ship combat system. With two primary characters (ship captains Blaze and Danielle) and a host of starting attributes, you can start the game in any number of ways, including a claim of allegiance for one of several factions. Or, just go for the gold as an out-and-out pirate.

Hunt treasure, or run illegal trade between islands. Pillage and plunder the countryside, or hunt down evil men and women at sea. Or, simply follow up on any of the hundreds of side quests that will be dropped in your path, no matter where you go. Sound familiar? It should. But, it should also sound a bit different as well, especially when you start walking the deck of your own ship, manning cannons, and blowing sea scum right out of the water! Come alongside, grapple, board, and take an enemy vessel. This is real high-seas action and a sea-dog-style adventure.

Pirates of the Caribbean is a treasure chest just waiting to be opened.

Pirates of the Caribbean E3 2003 Preshow Report From Gamespot

The game puts you in command of a small vessel when you start the game, and by wheeling and dealing or using force, you'll be able to amass a fortune and sail better ships, hire more hands, and generally build your seafaring empire. You'll be able to attack and board other ships, and the real-time combat system will let you enter into duels with other captains. With enough money, you can even buy the loyalty of those other captains and create a small armada with which to flex your piratical muscle.

E3 Booth Wrap-Up: Bethesda Softworks 05/19/03

Although it’s not the world’s most widely known publisher, Bethesda Softworks has provided some great experiences for PC and console gamers alike. Many PC readers will recall a swashbuckling game called Sea Dogs, and let’s not forget a little PC-***-console game called Morrowind. Although their titles clearly revolve around role-playing games, what Bethesda does, they tend to do well.

At E3, we had the opportunity to bunker down with the folks at Bethesda for some up-close-and-personal demonstrations of their upcoming games. While the company didn’t have a monstrous lineup, what they did show left us rather impressed.

Pirates of the Caribbean is a newcomer to the video game scene, but that’s not to say the game itself if necessarily new. See, Pirates started out as Sea Dogs 2, the sequel to the outstanding PC game from 2000. Rumors ran rampant before E3 about whether the newly announced game was just a relabeled game, and I’m here to tell you that 95 percent of that rumor – but not 100 – is true.

Pirates of the Caribbean is everything gamers were looking forward to in Sea Dogs 2, complete with the open-ended RPG elements, grandiose soundtrack, fantastic water effects and piratey flair. Yet the transition to Pirates has allowed the developers (Akella) to introduce a bit of a fantasy element to the game, namely, the inclusion of the undead skeleton pirates flaunted so well in the movie trailer.

The game will also now include not two “campaigns” but one, that of the male character just prior to the movie. This change won’t limit the overall length of the game, though. Despite the movie tie-in, the game will include eight islands, 12 cities and as many stops along the way as you wish. With randomly generated sea encounters, you can choose to do battle with as many or as few foes as you choose. You will also still be able to choose to embark upon quests for the various cultures (English, French, Pirates, Spanish), and you can change allegiances in the middle of the game, which adds to the gameplay possibilities.

Pirates of the Caribbean includes several enhancements from Sea Dogs, not the least of which is a new engine called the “Storm 2.” The Storm 2 engine was created to focus on water effects, and having seen the game in action, I can tell you that it handles water beautifully. Whether your ship is cutting through serene waters or rocking through a nighttime tempest, the waves will make you seasick with glee.

The interface you pull up when sailing between islands has also received an overhaul. No longer does the screen show simple colored triangles demarking various ships’ locations and allegiances. Instead, each ship now appears in miniature but in full 3D on a map that somehow seems to have more depth as well. This naturally makes encounters with other ships a bit easier to evaluate, and it’s also just a nice touch to an interface that got somewhat tiresome in the original Sea Dogs.

When on an island, players will now have the option to engage people in combat, and that option includes the use of a slow-reloading gun. Ammo for the gun is unlimited, unlike the cannon balls on your ship, but the slow reloading time keeps you from using it incessantly. You also won’t be tempted to use your newfound combat all the time, because random attacks on villagers will affect your reputation in town, as you’d expect from an RPG.

Basically, everything gamers loved in the original Sea Dogs and were looking forward to in the sequel has been translated faithfully over to Pirates of the Caribbean. I went into Bethesda’s booth with rather skeptical expectations for this game, and I came out very pleasantly surprised.

E3: Pirates of the Carribean Impressions

The game formerly known as Sea Dogs 2...

Pirates of the Caribbean started its life as the sequel to Sea Dogs, but it will finish its development cycle this summer as a game to go with the soon to be released movie of the same name. It will be available on both PC and Xbox.

The game begins with the player as the captain of a ship. The player may chose alliances with either Spain, Holland, Portugal, France, England or the pirates. There are side quests to be completed for each country, or the game can be played free form. The game allows the player to sail around using a top down map that shows the location of the islands, as well as other ships.

In addition to the captain, each ship can take on other sailors whose stats will increase those of the captain. These other sailors can also become captains who will sail along with you on your adventures. These ships will fight alongside yours during ship to ship combat, which is done through the use of cannons and can be done in either first or third person. To finish combat, the captain will board the opposing ship and face the crew in hand to hand combat. During this final stage, only the crew of the current ship will fight and the rest of the ship to ship battles would be paused.

The combat engine seemed to be a somewhat simpler version of the Sea Dogs combat system, and there were quick buttons for tedious tasks like lining up with docks and the final approach into towns. In order to talk to other characters, a list of possible sayings appears and the characters respond based on the saying picked. Talking can lead to new allies or new enemies or even throw you into combat. Combat on land appeared to be much the same as the hand to hand combat on ships. There are pistols in addition to swords for an added punch.

Pirates of the Caribbean seems to be a solid game with a movie tie in and I’m anxious to see how it turns out this July. It appears to combine a strong central story, a fair amount of open ended side quests and trading, and a new and exciting world. With a rich world laid out by the movie, the game hopes to take the players for a ride on the high seas that will never be forgotten.

Great reads. Thanks man. This is one of the few non-XBL games that I am actually looking forward to. Some of you old-timers may remember a game called New Horizons on the Sega Genesis. I spent countless hours on that game travelling the globe, buying and selling items, hiring a crew, and destroying other fleets. I may have to break out the genesis this weekend to get my "sea legs" again. :)

I was a little worried that -- having experienced the numerous delays associated with Morrowind -- that we wouldn't be seeing the XBox version of this game until September. Here's hoping they stick to that schedule.

New Preview:Pirates of the Caribbean

The deep, open-ended RPG flavor Bethesda has become famous for is now setting sail for a place far from the land of Morrowind. "Inspired" by the upcoming movie, Pirates of the Caribbean is shaping up to be one of, if not the best title in the slim pirate genre. Thanks to the depth that has become a trademark of Bethesda’s games, this’ll probably be as close as you get to living the life of a swashbuckler.

Those afraid Pirates of the Caribbean will fall into that sad "game based on a movie" category can rest at ease. It’s been in the works for quite some time. You may actually recognize it by the game’s old name, Sea Dogs. The game’s ties to the upcoming movie seem loose at best, which is a good thing. We were told that the game has its own underlying storyline that players may pursue at their leisure, much like Morrowind. Outside of the main story, you can follow the course of life you deem fit. This may involve a peaceful merchant profession, or the complete opposite, a bloodthirsty marauding pirate. The choice is up to you.

After spending some time with Pirates of the Caribbean at Bethesda’s booth I’m excited to say the least. The game breaks up into two major parts, time you’re in the ship and time you spend on land. When sailing, you view your boat from a bird’s eye view, surveying the surrounding ocean and nearby islands. The setting is large and spread out to make you feel like you really are setting sail for some serious journeys. Several scenarios are open to you while you are sailing. You will come across other vessels such as merchant ships or even other pirates. Of course your relations with the countries present in the Caribbean will affect how ships react to you. Pirates on the other hand will always pursue you no matter what. If you come into conflict with another ship, and believe me you will, you’re thrust into a battle scene where you and your enemy go at it.

The graphics during these conflicts are truly amazing and capture the dramatic feel of two ships locked in combat. You’ll maintain full control of your ship’s steering and sails as well as your cannons as you maneuver around your opponent and try to blow him out of the water. Turning your enemy’s ship into driftwood isn’t the only option you have. If you like you can attempt to board his ship and take it through hand-to-hand combat. Upon boarding the action switches to the default third person view used when you’re on land and the sword fighting ensues. If you prove victorious you can then loot the ship or even take it as your own. One other scenario worth noting is the inclusion of weather systems you must contend with when at sea. If you’re unlucky enough to run into a storm on the map you’re taken to that same battle scenario mentioned before, but this time you are fighting massive waves and destructive winds. Interestingly, the object is to survive by guiding your ship out of the storm. Once again the visual displays, especially the water effects, are truly amazing.

The other aspect of the game encompasses your inland excursions. There are numerous towns to explore along with several tropical locales where eager players can sniff out adventure. As usual, combat is simple yet effective. Not only do players get to test their swordsmanship, but their skill with a pistol as well. Of course there are plenty of sabers and guns out there for you to hunt down and inflict upon the poor swab dumb enough to cross you.

Depth is definitely the word of the day for Pirates of the Caribbean. A robust economy allows players to pursue a rewarding career as a merchant, or even a smuggler. Ships don’t sail themselves so you’ll need to seek out sailors to man your vessel and also watch your back during combat. You can even delegate the ships you take control of to your most trusted men so that they may spread your influence abroad. It’s quite possible to have your own small fleet. You’ll command many ships during your tenure and equipping them is your responsibility. This may seem a bit intimidating, shopping for cannons, sails, rigging, and the like, but the developers have struck a good balance between the danger of tedious busy work and the more practical aspects of pirate life that end up being pretty entertaining.

Under the surface of Pirates is a strong statistics system. Naturally you have the stats determining your combat ability and other things like your equipments’ attributes, but Bethesda and Akella have taken it a step further. Your character also has stats based on his charisma and his leadership, things every self respecting pirate captain needs. These stats figure into several aspects of the game. For instance take ship combat into consideration. The orders you relay (such as firing on ships or raising the sails) to your crew take a certain amount of time before they are followed. This delay depends on the sailors’ view of you as their captain. A captain with high marks in leadership will have his orders carried out immediately.

Pirates of the Caribbean is expected to release sometime this June so you shouldn’t have to wait much longer to get your hands on it. Games based on the pirate way of life are few and far between and the amount of quality titles in that group is quite slim. Judging from the build at E3, Pirates of the Caribbean is going to define the pirating experience and provide a rewarding role-playing experience.

The Pirates of the Caribbean Website has word that Pirates of the Caribbean (formerly known as Akella's Sea Dog's II) is shipping to stores. Not much for words, the simple announcement is: "We are pleased to announce that Pirates of the Caribbean for Xbox and PC has begun shipping, and will be in stores in early July." (thanks Bluesnews)
