Impressed With Load Times
[POSTED: 19-Nov-01]

Hello,

I got my Xbox today and am very, very happy with it. I bought Halo, DOA3, and Madden 2002. I am very impressed with the loading times. It seems a lot faster than any CD system I have played. Also the graphics are awesome, and this is just the beginning. I can't wait to see what developers have in store for next year. The hard drive is great. No more memory cards for me! The menus on startup and with the DVD are really great. Overall, I think the Xbox is a very polished and not rushed product. Everything looks real smooth and performs that way. The controller is great for someone with big hands like me. Bravo to Microsoft for a great console launch. I hope for the best in the future.

-PSYnman

Yeah, the load times in Xbox games are far superior to those on the PS2. If you think they're good, wait until you see the lightning quick loads in many of the GameCube's games.

Which DVD?
[POSTED: 19-Nov-01]

Hey love your site,

I have a couple of quick questions on console DVD players. I have an Xbox and a PS2 (I also plan on getting a GameCube). How does the Xbox DVD player compare with the PS2's? I'm a film freak and planned on getting the DVD kit for the Xbox when I thought it was going to be progressive scan. Now that I know that it's not, is there any reason to have it when my PS2 plays DVDs just fine? Is there any difference in the hardware (better motor)? We're also about to buy an HDTV. Will one console have any difference in DVD quality on HDTV over the other? On the back of the Xbox's box, it lists on the features "HDTV game and movie support." What kind of HDTV support is it if it's not progressive scan?

Thanks. You guys rock.

-GdB, Los Angeles

Both DVD players are basically the same. Neither plays in progressive scan mode and the options are adequate for both. This shouldn't factor into anyone's decision to buy one or the other unless having to pay $29 for the Xbox's DVD playback kit burns your britches. The Xbox is HDTV compatible because it can still play movies in a higher resolution, it just doesn't include a deinterlacer to sync up the frames.

Xbox RPGS and Platformers
[POSTED: 19-Nov-01]

What quality RPGs and platform games are in development for the Xbox that will be released by the summer of next year? Also, when will Microsoft start showing more of its 2002 games? In the newest EGM, Microsoft says it has more than 400 games in development for the Xbox between first party and third party, though I think that may be an exaggeration. When will we see some more of those games? Besides a few games to be released in the early months of next year, some Sega games, and a few screen shots of games to be released late next year, I haven't seen much. Keep up the great work. Thanks and happy gaming.

-C.L.N.

If you're looking for 3D platforming games, there really isn't a system that has established a definitive advantage. You can assume that the GameCube will have a healthy amount of them with Mario, Banjo, and Conker, but they won't be here for quite a while. On the Xbox, there aren't a lot of 3D platformers on the way. This is likely because Microsoft wants the Xbox to appeal to older players. Why Microsoft thinks older players aren't into platforming games is beyond me, but I would expect the next Rayman game to be released for Microsoft's console eventually. Quality RPGs for the Xbox are kind of scarce, but there are a few coming. Look out for Morrowind and Project Ego over the next year.

Halo Haven
[POSTED: 14-Nov-01]

First off, I would like to start as many others have started by saying great site. I don't know if you know how much all of your fans appreciate this site or not but let me tell you, I would take GameSpot over [other sites] any day! I am fed up and sick of all the pop-up advertisements, advertisements between pages, and subscription programs. I think that I represent all of your fans when I say thanks for the continuously free gaming news, previews, and reviews!

1. In your review of Halo, you mentioned in the first paragraph that, "Those who've spent the last few years looking for a first-person shooter as good as Rare's GoldenEye 007 or Valve's Half-Life will be happy to hear they need look no longer." I mentioned this to my friend and he quickly pointed out that it mentioned GoldenEye, but not Perfect Dark. I know that there are probably some better aspects of Perfect Dark over Halo, but overall from reading vast amounts of info I have a feeling that Halo is a better game than Perfect Dark is. Could you tell me which is better and why? A comparison article would be great!

2. Also, I have heard that Halo is going to the PC from some, while others say that it is staying on the Xbox exclusively because Microsoft won't let it go to the PC. So my question is, is Halo going to come out for the PC or not?

3. Have there been any indications for online play for Halo? I thought that it would be fairly easy to make a downloadable patch for Halo that would make it playable online. Or perhaps Bungie could release an expansion, sort of like what Gran Turismo Concept will be like. Make it a cheap, small game with a couple of new features (weapons, vehicles, maps, and so on) and the main feature of online play. This makes a whole lot of sense because you mentioned in your review that Halo multiplayer is great fun, but really has to be played with more than six players. Since most people won't rush out to buy multiple Xboxes, TVs, and controllers to play Halo with more than six players, an add-on of this sort would open up a whole new level of gaming for Halo.

4. Does the ending of Halo leave open a large possibility for Halo 2? Obviously, if the game is as big of a success as it seems it will be, Bungie will almost surely release Halo 2 no matter what. But does the ending kinda lead you to believe that there is something left to the story?

5. Last but not least, is the book Halo: The Fall of Reach available already or not? I tried looking it up online at my local library's database, but there wasn't anything on it about it.

Thanks for the info I am sure I will get!

-Gavin Schutten, MI

1. Please remember that this is my opinion and does not represent the views of everyone here on staff, but here goes. Perfect Dark is better than Halo. There, I said it. Halo is a kick-ass game and I had a lot of fun playing it, but its lack of mission objectives other than "kill everything in sight" started to wear on me after a while. I also grew tired of playing through so many nearly identical rooms and mowing down the same five or six enemies again and again. The first few hours with Halo are truly incredible, but I found my will to play gradually diminishing as the game wore on. Perfect Dark's story is kind of clichéd, but the mission objectives are varied, there are tons of weapons and gadgets to use, and the level design and enemy placement just seems smarter to me. As far as multiplayer is concerned, Halo kicks major butt with 16 players, but with just four players, half the maps are rendered useless, and the lack of weapon variety stymies the game's replay value. Most people will never have the ability to play with 15 other fraggers in Halo, so I have to give the nod to Perfect Dark in this regard as well. There's just more meat in PD. There are several different kinds of bots to add to the mix, and two firing options for each of the game's 20-plus weapons. Who can forget the fun of watching the bodies pile up from a well-placed laptop gun in turret form? I like both games a lot, but I feel as if more planning and precision went into making PD. Again, it's my opinion, so please don't send me your Halo hate mail.

2. Halo will be released for the PC sometime next year.

3. Don't be surprised if an online-only version of Halo is released in the next year.

4. Sorry, you'll have to play through it. No spoilers here.

5. I haven't heard if the book is out or not.

Shane=Dumbass...I especially love his comments on RPGs for the Xbox...and the fact that he thinks perfect dark is better than Halo...PD was fun...but I dont think its anywhere near halo on the best games list...

he doesn't seem all that biased. He said Gamecube has the fastest loading times of the 3 consoles, and that's true.

He also said that IN HIS OPINION Perfect Dark is better than Halo. He specifically mentioned that his opinion is simply his own and does not reflect anyone else's at gamespot. He said in his opinion, Halo kicks ass, but PD is better.

He said Xbox doesn't support progressive scan for DVD movies, which is also true.

He also said that none of the systems have any great 3d platform games, which is also true.

What's so biased about his responses?

Stone Cold

he is telling thousands that for RPG's Nintendo is the way to go, however whos to say that MS, wont be the RPG King?

He also begs to differ that the PS2 and XBox DVD player, have no difrence.........um maybe he should read what IGN had to say(Xbox's DVD player is much better then PS2's). Xbox DVD player has much more features also.

He is also expressing to thousands that PD is better then Halo, and all you do is shoot down aliens, well maybe if he understood the "PERFECT PLOT" to Halo, he wouldnt have a problem.

And i can pull up more and more of his biased crap

well Heyyoudvd we already know you are biased so I guess its hard for one GC fanboy to see another GC fanboys biased comments. Ok so he said some few "facts". But its the way he JUST noted BAD things about the Xbox and not any good things, where as he only said GOOD things about the GC. Ok so WAHHH the DVD player doesnt support progressive scan DVds...wow its not a super quality $400 DVD player, the total price of the DVD player is prolly $50... Mr. biased shane could of said "Even though the Xbox doesnt support progressive scan, most consumers wont need this feature and game console such as the gamecube dont have DVD players at all" He just skips around the GCs faults and goes right to the good points of the GC and hits the bad parts of the Xbox. He gets paid to be honest and he is suppost to not love one system more than another for the sake of ratings. He goes on about all the GREAT aspects of PS but doesnt say any downsides, and he doesnt say much about halo other than its a "kick ass game" He also LIES like "Most people will never have the ability to play with 15 other fraggers in Halo, so I have to give the nod to Perfect Dark in this regard as well." If he has ever played using GameSpy arcade and tunnel, he would know you can. I personally have played with 10 other people, and some guy today must of had at least a t1 because he was hosting like 2 games with 5-7 people in each one and it was lag free. It is possible, and we are lucky it is happening so fast. Give it a few months when more people will be able to hook up their Xboxes online. Right now out of the like 750,000 Xboxes out there (by now) prolly only 500-800 have been online. Usually there are around 200 people on arcade, but I have never seen it over 350 yet, so thats prolly a pretty good guess of how many people are online. I dont even know why Shane the dumbass is saying this, its not like you could go online and hook up N64s...and were bots THAT fun...Id play online with REAL people that can think for themselves anyway...

Don't get me wrong here... but I think all FPS should take a note from PD's multiplayer... it had tons of bots, a good selection of maps, all the weapons had secondary fire, there were a ton of weapons, and you could customize the weapons you had on each stage. I'm not saying PD's a better game than Halo, because it's not. (IMO) Halo's multiplayer is awesome, but there is still a little bit more that they could have added to make it PERFECT.

Some more random thoughts...

Shane has prolly never even beaten Halo! I like his "Sorry, you'll have to play through it. No spoilers here." He could of just said "WARNING-SPOILER!" and then answered the lads question.

Now I agree with Stone Cold, as who is Shane to say that XBox wont have good RPGs because MS wants to appeal to a older audience. Ok now he uses evidence that Nintendo will have "Mario, Banjo, and Conker" out...Now the ONLY reason they will be out is because they were out on the N64, and because of their sucess, no **** they will be out for the GC...now has Xbox had this "privelege" to be able to already have good games? Of course not! Its the first try, so they dont have games with a super-strong foundation like Mario is. Now also Shane shouldnt use an argument like that because of course Xbox cant have Mario! Has he heard of Munch's Odyssey? Theres a nice launch title in addition to the many other games. I like how he briefly notes Project Ego...it will blow all his GC RPGs out of the water! SHANE SUCKS!

Sure, sure...but my arument to that is this

Did you buy Halo for Multiplayer?

Chances are no....I bet most of everyone here didnt initially buy it for multiplayer at all. I wasnt even concerned with it. Just saw screenshots, movies, previews and such. I bought it for the single player game. The multiplayer is a nice suprise, but only online multiplayer. My other argument is the fact that Bungie didnt think there would be this "hack" to make a virtual LAN so you could play online, and they thought there were enough modes to satisfy you and your 3 friends. And maybe if you were lucky enough to have friends with XBoxes and even more friends you would have a grand ol' time. They didnt expect Halo online to be ones life activity until the Xbox Online network came out in 2002...so thats why there is all of this talk about a new version of halo. I mean, if you think about it...the link featuires and many modes of play are enough for a console game with your friends, but with the online thing, people are turning Halo into another type of game. Bottom line is that Bungie didnt know their game would evolve, so they are fixing it. It isint their fault and some idiot at gamespot shouldnt lie and be a dumbass!

Bungie did drop the multiplayer ball. They were gonna code it so it could be patched for Multiplayer in the new year but in a rush to get it out for launch they cancelled that part. Now the rumor mill says there is gonna be a 1.5 version so it can be played " Officially " online. I love the game it gets 10/10 in my books but it ticks me off that I might have to get a newer version to play online after I already showed my support by picking it up a launch. Now I wish I would have waited. I want the best value for my money and after that info leaked I don't feel personally that I got my full money's worth anymore

Frostberg, he's trying to stay unbiased, and because he doesn't say that Xbox rules and PS2/GCN suck, then you guys accuse him (and me) of being biased. You guys are a lot more biased towards Xbox than he or I are towards Gamecube.

Most Xbox fanboys on this site just say "Gamecube sucks and Xbox Rules", while it seems that he and I both recognize that Xbox is good (and Halo is awesome), but I believe GCN is slightly better, so everyone flames me for it.

Every time someone tries to stay in the middle, everyone here accuses him of being a biased PS2/GCN fanboy.

WTF? did you read what I said and the article? We were talking about SHANE, the person who wrote the article I liked to isint shane! Joe was saying that Shane isint biased, he was saying he just "prefers" it more. If he PREFERED the GC so much more, why does he feel it necessary to list all the great games for it and only tell its upsides, where as if shane mentions the Xbox its all about how the games arent that great and that he loves his GC. Do I work for gamespot? NO! Its okay for me to love my Xbox and dis the GC...500,000 unique visitors daily will not read what I say, nor will it influence them. Shane is in a pretty powerful place where people read his collums and such, and Im sure he is looked up to in some areas. For geting paid like he does, he shouldnt try to make the XBox out the way he does. He should be opinionless, an d jus5t present the facts. Ok so he can tell us his favorite games or something, but not while making the Xbox look bad with his uncorrect comments. Also like I said, he gives NO downsides to the GC...right there you can tell hes biased for the GC. I dont care if you love your GC to death, thats not my business...I just dont like that someone at a MAJOR gaming website can put the XBox down like that and raise his GC above all of us...

Also you might note that Joe got his idea for the article he wrote by going into their message boards...so obvioudsly we arent the only ones...and im sure there are a lot of other people out there...that tells you there is a problem when there are more than a handfull (like Joe found from their forums) of people that feel the same way
