The rollout will touch off a new round of competition with Sony, which offers the popular video game console, PlayStation 2.

Microsoft lags far behind the Japanese electronics giant in terms of sales revenue in Korea. Xbox has sold between 30,000 and 40,000 units so far in the domestic market, compared with PlayStation 2¡¯s 300,000 to 400,000 units, according to industry figures.

Sony's Korean unit said it has signed up some 10,000 gamers since launching online gaming last July. The company has set a target of 100,000 online subscribers by the end of this year for its PlayStation 2 online service by introducing 10 new game titles.

Korea is one of the most wired nations with more than two thirds of households, subscribing the broadband Internet as of the end of August.
