An anonymous source informed us today that Microsoft and IBM have signed a multi-million dollar agreement under which IBM Microelectronics will manufacture a next generation CPU for the Xbox 2. Work on the new processor has already started, but the deal was inked just a few days ago.

Who is designing the chip? At this point, we don’t know. We assume that the chip would be built at the East Fishkill plant. This is IBM’s most state-of-the-art fabrication facility.

We also don’t know if the chip will be manufactured using current 0.13 micron (a micron is a millionth of a meter) process technology or the upcoming 90nm fabrication process.

At the moment we have no official confirmations about this information so take it for what it’s worth. A Microsoft spokesman was unavailable for comment at the time of posting this story. We’ll certainly have more as things develop.

Rumors are cool and all, but, until the I hear it from the proverbial horse's mouth, it's still heresay. But, sounds interesting, nonetheless :)

Not bloody likely.

Is MS going to write a whole new OS and DirectX extensions for a CPU that isn't Intel-compatible? No way! The best decision MS made was to use standard PC parts. That makes time-to-market much faster and allows them to react quickly to changes by the competition.

AMD? Maybe, but still unlikely with the heat issues.
IBM? Never.

It will always be Intel.

And you are under the impression that IBM cannot fabricate a compliant chip because.....??

Isn't IBM still making those crappy C1 chips that used to be Cyrix chips?

IBM is making (jointly) the PS2 chip, but it makes no sense to "invent the wheel again" when an intel chip is 99% developed and will easily do the work that that sweet R500 gfx card can not.

If IBM still makes those C1 chips (if they haven't sold that division) then they can make em, but it still doesn't make much sense. At this point atleast.

It's already been confirmed that ATI is going to be making the new chip for the Next Xbox system http://www.ati.com/companyinfo/press/2003/4678.html

We are talking about CPU's not GPU's :o

ATI will be the Video Chipset of choice and im sure Intel will stay as the CPU processor.
