The Victorian Government will provide developer kits to the state's game software industry to write entertainment programs for Microsoft's Xbox console.

The decision to subsidise Victorian members of the industry that employs about 600 people nationwide (half in Victoria) balances the purchase of $250,000 worth of PlayStation 2 kits from Sony last year and was foreshadowed in the Victorian Government's "Game On'' blueprint for the industry released in February.

The peak industry body, the Game Developers Association of Australia, will distribute the kits to developers according to their needs and their commercial prospects.

According to the Government's industry plan, the rationale for giving precedence to Sony was because PlayStation 2 was the "dominant console platform by a considerable margin" with 1 million of the 40 million sold worldwide sold in Australia.
