View Full Version : Crimson Skies... WOW !!!

I got Crimson Skies yesterday at GameStop and it is SWEEEET !!! Graphics are WOW !!! Locked at 30 fps it runs smooth as silk. Controls are tight and game play is "pick up and play". As for the online play, I played for 4 hours last night and did not, I repeat, DID NOT have any lag whatsoever, hard to believe but true. Game modes, planes and maps are plentiful and razor sharp. They even have an up to the minute rating system on each player in the lobby (via one dice) it shows a ranking of 1 through 4 dots or a star based on your latest performance, nice when setting up even team games. Mad props to FASA Studios (of MechAssault fame) for another job WELL DONE !!! I can't think of one bad thing to say about Crimson Skies except that it took up most of my day. Tomorrow will be different though... It will take up most of my night too.

would this game be worth buying if i didnt have xbox live?

Seawolf1
10-23-2003, 03:22 AM
That really depends on what you like. The single player mode is story driven so we all know that once you finish the story the game is over so what's left is Multiplayer. Just being honest try renting it and see if its something you want to buy first. Personally I bought Indiana Jones which has no multiplayer and is a story driven action game and I still load it up and play a few levels every now and then. I think its a good game but thats just my opinion.;)

I say yes. The missions are started when you choose, meantime you can just fly around doing tricks (free roam GTA style), site seeing, sounds kinda weird I know but the game looks that good it's just fun to fly around looking, in between missions. Plus it has local multiplayer up to 4 per box and system link 2 per box. I think it's an X Box must have quality title. Lots to do in Crimson Skies without LIVE.

Yeah, I am surprised how good it is. I expected a good game, but it's better then I even expected. The multi-player is awesome! The single player is pretty sweet too.

How's the lag? IGN said the lag is horrible?

I played for a few hours last night and 0 lag,,,in several rooms. I am one of those that is really suprised also at just how good this game is. I did seem to have trouble getting into invited games but it may have been that their rooms filled fast. But ya wow what a game. My two fav maps are Chicago, and that under ground cave one. I love going in that lady's mouth. hehe:p

Btw, for thsoe that don't have XBL, it's also on Xbox Connect.

Ok, this game is awesome, I didn't get to play on Live cuz my connection was shot last night, but I did come across one problem in single player.

I got to the 7th or 8th mission, quit the game, shut it off for a bit, came back on and loaded my saved game. Now, it brings me into the Zep, where you see a guy constantly working on the floor and your choice of planes up top (not the same view of when you pick your plane) and I can't do a dam thing!!! I don't get it, it just sits there and no buttons work....so now I have to start all over again :cuss:

But I will be on Live tonight....quick Q - are all planes unlocked on Live?

I may have to check out this game when I go back home this weekend. I was originally looking forward to Crimson Skies but kind of looked away after the many delays. I'm glad to hear that it turned out great. Flight combat games are one of my favorite genres and I've been awaiting a game to replace Air Force Delta Storm for the longest time. Online play makes this game even more appealing since I'm trying to build a collection of online games for I can finally buy XBL.

I'm definitely glad that the city of Chicago is in the game. Sorry, I haven't been following the game closely for a while so I kind of forgot some of the stuff in it.:o

I had no lag as well, even on 16 player games (maybe the host had a great connection) I just went to games that had 3-4 stars by them.

Casper - Yes the planes are unlocked on Live, there's 8-10 total I think and I'm sure there will be downloadable ones in the future.

I think all the planes are already unlocked, but I haven't read the manual yet. Plenty to choose from anyway.

My one beef with the Live play is joining rooms.

You can only join when they are idle, and the invite is no good once the game has been launched, so no waiting in the lobby or even watching the action RTCW style.

Pretty minor, but can be pretty frustrating when you're trying to play w/ an individual instead of just looking for random games.

Other than that, I thought I spotted a little bit of lag once, but did have a little voice lag, but not any worse than GR gets sometimes, and probably not even that bad.

That joining thing sounds like Mechassault's issue too. Either way, I can't wait to get this game on Sunday when I take advantage of Toy R Us's deal.

If it's like Mechassault, you'll have two planes that you can unlock, the rest will be unlocked already.

All planes are unlocked for multiplayer. Single player has all unlockable planes. ZERO LAG... And I mean 0 LAG. 4 hours, at least 10 different rooms, all maps and all game types. It is unbelievable to say the least !!! Just get it, you can thank me later.

Question....anybody play Crimson Skies on XBconnect yet? If so, how does it run? I won't have Live until I change broadband providers. I got on w/ this MSN/Qwest DSL deal, but they sent me a ****e modem that is absolutely unconfigurable and their tech support is atrocious on both ends. :cuss:

So, anyway, enough whining...how is CS:HRTR on XBconnect?

How is CS on the teamplay aspect? Is it mostly single man action with a little splsh of teamplay mixed in a-la Mechassault.

One thing I feared about this game is that it's just frenetic action like Mech. Mech is fun, but a little too much action and not enough strategy for me. Gets old quick...

...guess I'll just have to go out and give it a rent.

Yes... You can have a guest on LIVE, just like Moto GP and MA. The team thing is a bit scattered do to the fact that when you get shot down you usually respawn a ways away from where the action is, but the people I played with were trying. Wild Chicken is the gem of the multiplayer, dogfighting is fun but when there is a clear objective in a game I'm a happy guy. Beg, borrow or steal your way into the Crimson Skies... You won't regret it !!!

So are the maps...I like it much better than MA, but u can tell that the games are pretty dam close...one plane even has an electrical shock to short out the planes engine for a few seconds

It definitely can be. I haven't played MA since it was originally released (no new game types, or anything)

There is definitely less of a stand there or walk slowly shooting at things aspect of it to me.

There are similarities, including weapons, and boards. But Fasa is still involved, so nor surprises there.

Plenty of games can degrade into just frantic shoot-em-ups, especially if you're playing dogfight or team dogfight, but I got in quite a few matches yesterday where the teams worked together. Made it a lot more fun.

I said it in the other thread, but the gameplay and firing setup is alot more like Bloodwake than MechAssault. I dont know why this game is being compared to MechAssault at all. They share very little in common.

One thing I'd like to say about the single-player is that it has the best "escort" type missions I've played. They're varied, they're interesting, and you don't constantly feel paniced that the thing you're escorting is going to be destroyed.

I think it depends on the game. I know ghost recon claims you can play 8 player system link, and since you can only play one person per console system link, i would assume you need 8 boxes linked to do so.

Great game, even though my highest kill amount is like 6 in one game. Chicago is definitly the best map.

Actually most games support more than 4 X Boxes. The only ones that choke you down to 4 are Halo, Brute Force and Whacked as far as I know. Crimson Skies supports 16 boxes, but who has room for all those TVs ???

Been playing this the past 3 days. Beautiful game, and engulfing sound.

Like I said before, it is nothing like Mechassault.

I haven't even played on Live yet. I'm at the Lost City and have just entered the mouth to the hidden city. It has been fun all the way around, and I haven't found anything to be repeatative.

All tonight I've been playing on the projector and ohhhh my does this game really make you feel like you flying when it is that big. I literally lose my equilibrium when I keep doing spins!

Only one map problem so far and that is Chicago. The out of bounds is way too close. Half of my dog fights kept ending up with me flipping back saying I was going out of bounds even though the other fighter kept going straight. Also when you get to the warehouses part the out of bounds is within the buildings and if you hit it you get flipped and 4 times out of 5 you will end up getting stuck against a wall and blowing up.

Otherwise, A+ title, pretty good story, great controls, great sound, great visuals, great levels, and this is all just the single player.

You can only hear people near you when in the game like Moto GP and yes you can only talk to teammates. Although in the instructions it makes referense to the white button being for broadcast for multiplayer, haven't tried it yet but I'll get back to you on that one. By the way... I'm in Chicago.

Right now Rainbow Six and Morrowind: GOTY take priority. It's not that i can't afford them, but why pay full price for a bunch of games i wont have enough time to play anyway. The price will drop and i will buy them eventually too. I've been thinking about getting one of the game passes from Blockbuster too. I couldnt find a place to park at EB today so i had time to think... :o

The way I look at it, this game is not a buyer. It's a definite renter.

The Story is great in the single player game and the Cinematics are unbelievable. It's amazing the way they put this game together, it's like watching a movie. But yeah, those cinematics are impressive. Reminds me of that movie "Final Fantasy".

Other then that, they multiplayer online is way too repetative and WAY TOO many people drop out of matches when their losing and the games about to end. WAY TOO MANY, especially the guys who host that matches.

In some cases it's good, but I don't know. It's not the best online.
