I was wondering if anyone knew what a sufficient internet connection speed would be for online play? our local high speed provider guaruntees 1mbps. Is that fast enough to play xbox games online without it being choppy?

It should be, but it all depends on the other players connections as well. Plus your up speed matters alot more with the xbox than on the pc I've noticed. You need at least 128Kb up speed for smooth play.

I find that most people hosting have terrible up speeds and their servers lag with only 4 people. And I'm talking lag to where you can't even move. I have played smoothly on some servers with 6 people but after that I haven't found one with more that runs lag free. That stinks too because it is alot of fun having three people in a warthog or 5 on a tank. You can do alot of teamwork type stuff.

my up for cable is 45k. whenever people download from me, they get anywhere from 40-50k a sec.

125+ kbps

Visit http://www.dslreports.com/stest for a test to see how fast your connection is. :)

Mine read:

Test running..........
** Speed 455(down)/277(up) kbps **
(At least 9 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

Which is O.K., it should've done much better but maybe it's because I've been leaving my computer on for 3 days. :D

just a guess, but i think true online play (vs. the "system link" hack) will not require as much upload bandwith per player.
currently the tunnel is letting people play online with the "system link" multiplayer, which is very likely not optimized for internet play - just a short cable from xbox to xbox.
i think a game would have an "online multiplayer" option vs a "system link" option in the future.
