I'm having trouble thinking of reason why you'd want to split it. Care to fill me in?

Only for games that require you to press the white button.
4-way is also available. Saw one at the mall last week.
Just my $.02 on the splitter from xlivechat:
1. It works well. Cool for games like Links 2004
2. He makes them himself from items I think he get at RadioShack
3. It looks like he makes them himself. (i.e. Serial numbers from the parts are scratched off)
4. Kind of fragile. I tripped on the cord and the input device is now wobbly (for lack of a better term.)
If you don't have the time to get the parts yourself and make one, it is definately worth the price! A few of my buddies don't have live, so when we play at my house, it is fun for both people to be able to hear and talk.

Question.... if you have another mic to plug into the splitter wouldnt you have the plug part then?
Also you can buy those for like 2 bucks... at radio shack just look for a splitter thats the same size. I have one but i only got one mic.

You don't have to push the white button in Rs3. You might be thinking of Ghost Recon.

I don't have XBL yet so hopefully someone could explain..
If you're playing online and you've got a friend over, couldn't you just buy a second headset, plug it into Player 2's controller, and then wouldn't you both be able to chat?

That still wont work, even with 2 complete sets, headset and mic and memory card thing the guest still cant talk.
You can always make one yourself, here is a tutorial. (http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/communicator-splitter.php)
