i just jumped up from a 19" magnavox
to a 32" panny flat screen HDTV w/ monster cables,, now i cant stop playing halo online ,,, omg I can see things now:D :p

yet again the xbox amazes me!! also watched swordfish dvd fell in love with halle berry

My room is completely black (walls, carpet, ceiling) and I don't have a problem with light reflection. I didn't see the need to mask off part of the screen during a 16x9 program. And since the native mode of the projector is 4x3 I decided to buy a screen to match.

36" Toshiba S-Video TV. It suits me just fine until the price of HDTVs drop a little more. It's not that I can afford one, but, that's my excuse since high-definition is not utilized by networks in abundance as of yet. We have about 3-4 more years to see some substantial progression...2006 will be the year that high-definition will be standard. By then, TVs will be half of what they are now. Oh yeah, my wife won't let me spend $2500 for a TV :D hehe

I couldn't go with a 4x3 screen because of how the room is layed out. The projector to screen distance was always just too much and I didn't have the wall space. If you look at my pics, the 4x3 projected image goes from the bottom of the floor to the top of my center speaker up top. I wouldn't have room for anything else and I rarely watch 4x3 stuff so it works. Can't get it pitch black especially with light reflecting off of the screen so masking was a must.

I have had spiders though but my cat always catches them. :p

Exactly, dude...getting an HDTV now doesn't make sense to me because all the networks will be required to be in digital format in 2006...by then, I anticipate that the prices of HDTVs will be much more reasonable. Man, I would love to play my XBox on one in the meantime, though! :p

Exactly, there are things you can take advantage of with an HDTV or HDTV ready set like the progressive scan output of the xbox (in games) and a seperate prog scan DVD player. They sure do look nice.

Yeah PGR was one of those weird ones. I never did see them answer the question for good so I would think it wasn't.

16x9 is refering to the width to height ratio of the image which is called the aspect ratio.

Standard televisions have an aspect ratio of 4x3 or 1.33:1 (it is 1.33x as wide as it is high)

HDTV standard aspect ratio is 16x9 or 1.78:1 (it is 1.78x as wide as it is high) Eventually 4x3 televisions will be phased out and widescreen will be the standard. 2006 is the projected deadline for this to happen and when NTSC broadcast television, currently broadcasting in 4x3, will basically get turned off by demands from the FCC. Certain extentions could happen of course.

So when we are saying that a game supports 16x9 then we are saying that when viewed on a widescreen tv more information is actually shown than on a standard 4x3 television. The image isn't being stretched to fill the extra width, instead you get to see more landscape, or race track, etc on the sides. Hopefully all future games for the xbox will actually be widescreen enhanced.

PGR isn't. I made a mistake. No one has been able to confirm the unlocking of a 16x9 mode so guessing it was a rumor.

Thunder is 16x9 but it isn't labeled as such. I haven't tried it personally though but it comes from some what intelligent people that have tested it on their equipment. ;)

If you're waiting on getting an HDTV just for the rollout of it on the networks.....You're missing a heck of alot in DVD's.

I could have cared less about HD transmissions, but rather wanted the best viewing experience possible from my small, but growing DVD collection. Besides, the XBOX looks absolutely stunning on it. 53" Pioneer PRO-510HD (Elite Series).

Clint...there's no doubt that I am missing out...I know this...but, I really would love to persuade my wife in getting one...that's the main hurdle that I have to jump! lol.... I have a brother that has a 60" projection TV (Not HDTV) and I played Amped on it and I couldn't believe my eyes! I can only imagine what HDTV looks like....man! It sounds like you have a nice TV :)

You don't need an HDTV to get the most out of DVD. DVD resolution doesn't touch HDTV resolution by a long shot.

I've got an old Toshiba Theater Wide 40" 16x9 television in the living room with component inputs and it supports anamorphic presentation like a charm.

I don't know if you can still get that model anywhere. I know it isn't made anymore. I understand the sentiment, clintb, but any television that supports anamorphic input will bring out the best from the DVD format.

HDTVs are nice, however. :)

When I'm by myself playing on the Xbox I have it hooked up to my 27" Toshiba TV with S-Video in my room and when friends come over to play Halo and Fever I plug it into my 32" Sony TV with my receiver and 4 speaker setup(which is in my living room), it rocks.

I didn't mean for it to sound like everything that's not HDTV won't get the great benefit from a DVD, but rather the 16:9 format is key to unlocking my own maximum viewing pleasure. Heck, these days it almost seems that 16:9 and HDTV are synonymous. I went from a 27" 4:3 Mitsubishi direct view to the 53" Pioneer 16:9 and good lord. Anything in widescreen/letterboxing on the Mits was soooo tiny.

I'm a bit rusty. Is it the TV or the DVD where the support for Anamorphic begins? I thought it was within the mastering of the DVD.

The DVD must be mastered with an anamorphic image. The television must be able to interpret that image. If it can't everybody looks tall and thin. I call it the conehead effect. You see this a lot in dvd/television showrooms and at conventions, sadly.

You can tell the DVD player to do the conversion before sending it out to the TV but then you don't get the benefits of the enhanced resolution.

I like 16x9 televisions, too, but I prefer to watch movies on my 120" 4x3 screen over my 40" 16x9 screen.

If someone is shopping for a regular HDTV for the living room I would recommend a 16x9 over one of the 4x3 HDTVs available. It's a more future-proof design.

(I still watch DVD on a 27" 4x3 screen...but that's only because I'm about 3' away from it when I'm on the treadmill. :D)

I hope you don't watch 'full screen' pan and scam movies. You know with a 120" 4x3 screen that is a 110" 16x9 screen. Plus you get all the image of the movie. I'm sure you know all this and that statement was probably just written wrong. Please tell me that it is written wrong. :D

Besides, HDTV is synonymous with 16x9. That is the HD standard. There won't be any 4x3 HD signals being broadcast after 2006. 4x3 televisions will be obsolete and all video games should be available in 16x9 as well.

But, seriously, I would love to have a HDTV, but, I figure I will wait a couple years first...that way my wife will let me get my 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound first...otherwise, I might as well as kiss my DD 5.1 goodbye :eek: (In other words, she won't let me get both of them at the same time or near the same time...DD 5.1 first...then HDTV later...that's how it works in my house :eek: )
